Newcastle United – News Roundup – 09 July 2009 [updated]

Bassong to Arsenal?
Bassong to Arsenal?
Crikey it’s a dire morning for news about Newcastle United. I’ve had to scratch around desperately to find anything that hasn’t been regurgitated half a dozen times already. The press even seem to be taking a day off from making things up, possibly in embarrassment at the Ananda Krishnan non-story.

I suppose we ought to be glad the press are keeping quiet for once but it shows a huge lack of consideration for people trying to do news roundups like this.

We get a brief mention in The Times’ transfer roundup regarding our interest in Fraizer Campbell. Apparently Hull are also interested in him but the report claims that their interest could be scuppered by the Mackems.

The Mail claims that Arsenal have already approached Bassong about signing him.

Seb says:

“Premier League clubs are interested in me, but nothing is simple because  Newcastle are in the middle of a takeover and nobody knows who will be the  manager.”

Well, quite.

The Chronicle ran a survey about season tickets with the results being roughly as follows:

  • 52.1% have not renewed their season tickets.
  • 48% are considering not going to matches next season.
  • 51% are considering only attending on a game-by-game basis.
  • 95% want Ashley to leave before they return.
  • 73% want to see the back of ‘mercenary’ players.

I find the results of this survey strangely uninspiring but The Express follows it up with a brief article, although they still report that Krishnan is favourite to take over the club, which is hardly finger-on-the-pulse stuff.

That really is about it, sorry. If the press give me the material I’ll try to do a better job tomorrow.

Update – 09:00

The Mirror is now claiming that Gianluca Vialli is coming to Newcastle as Director of Football, which just goes to show the sort of nonsense the papers will print. No such report would be complete without a quote from ‘insiders’ of course:

Insiders claim the new owners would make £25million available straight away for signings.

Complete and utter invention if you ask me (and I know you want to). Even my dog laughed when I told him.

  1. Dont worry about it. Most of the stuff you read is BS anyway. I reckon in the next week are club will be sold, to who? I have know idea. At least they’re doing something right with the confidentality agreements. Time will tell. Off to work now, see ya later.;-)

  2. Thanks for the info Hugh. It would be interesting to see how many fans the Chronicle surveyed to obtain those results. As you say they are not very inspiring at all but with some positive news in the next week, hopefully the loyalist suporters in the land will have a change of heart

That sounds like the Mackem (probably) e.mail that’s been doing the rounds. Hong Kong taking over, Alan Shearer as manager (again), huge transfer kitty (again), but with another ex Chelsea legend (Vialli) as DOF. At least I think that’s how it goes.

  4. I cannot believe that a daily paper are actually running this story!

They even claim a inside source!!!!

    The cheek of it….

  5. worky – I know I agreed to putting something about the charity for GNR in the sidebar. Not sure I know what I was agreeing to? :)

Just a simple link or what?
    Much appreciated either way.

A Man Utd fan who I correspond with on email (and others) after speaking with a bunch of them on teamtalk, has been the first to sponsor me for £20. I’ve never even met him.

I was genuinely touched but then I’m a soft sh*te.

Just goes to show mancs aren’t all bad…..

I’d just done a few lines, a picture, a link to your “just giving” page, and a link to the prostate charity so people could see what they were donating for.

That’s about the size of it.

It’s ready, but I haven’t turned it into a sidebar “widget” yet.

    Could do a mini-blog too, I suppose?

  7. Class, cheers worky.

Hopefully I’ll sort out a better photo as I look a bit of a mong and my mate is dwarfing me (though he is 6ft 3 or summat)!!! But it was the only relevant one I could get hold of and I had to rush my fundraising page as my race number didn’t come through until Tuesday and the run is a few weeks earlier this year so not much time left.

Going to see if work will match what I make so hopefully people will dig deep!!! ;-)

You look like you’ve had a couple of “E’s”, Bowburn. But that’ll be the endorphins or whatever.

  9. :D

My mate is miffed because his vest looks pink. It wasn’t but it adds to the illusion of campness we seem to have struck.

Time to dig iout a better photie….
