Sol Campbell – ‘Free’ to choose life at the Toon?

Free to do what he wants, any old time?
Free to do what he wants, any old time?
Rumours coming from a number of sources including The Telegraph and The Sun in the last 48 hours, claim that Sol Campbell may be on the verge of joining Newcastle, now that his contract has officially been cancelled with Notts County. Now this isn’t exactly new, or ground-breaking news as it’s something the majority of us have been hearing about for quite some months.

But The Telegraph quotes Hughton:

“Well Sol would be one of a number of players that, of course, we will be assessing over the next month because come the end of January we have to make sure that we have the right squad and the right players. Of course it is not only us that know about Sol’s situation and it won’t only be us who are interested.

The most important thing for us is that in that last hour of the window that we have a squad in place that will take us through the last period of this season which will be a very demanding period.

“It will also be a period where the other teams will be strengthening and deciding what they need as they address that last period of the season themselves. We have to make sure that we are right come that last day.”

This could tie-in to reports that we’re set for a battle with Hull City to sign Matthew Kilgallon from Sheffield Utd in January. Of course, that could mean we’d settle for Sol, or that we want them both. As has been aired on here before, Sol Campbell on the right wages, would be a great signing as far as I’m concerned.

We’d certainly seem to have a head start on some of our rivals in The Championship and below, considering our good start to the season and the fact that Campbell has moved into the area. He could be tempted by another stint in the Premiership, but it remains to be seen if he’ll get any suitors from those lofty heights at the moment.

N.B. Story initially started by toonsy and finished by yours truly…

  1. I’m a bit unsure about Killgallon – seemed to be a great prospect but has that developed? What does everyone else think? Campbell seems a sound choice on short term but the decline in his game was clear to see even last season.

  2. Campbell would be a decent signing as Kishanvilli hasnt proved his worth at centre half, Kilgalon is no better than Kadar but i wish we would sign a left back as cover for Enrique.
Off topic, .Com are reporting that the ref for the Watford game is a Sunderland fan who reffed our defeat at Scunthorpe, why appoint him for our games as he can hardly claim to be an un biased official and he is leaving himself open to a hammering should he make any controversial decisions.

  3. Campbell would be a great sort term signing.  Unfortunately I think the dithering at the club will scupper any chance of signing him.  Wouldn’t be suprised to see him at Boro or WBA.

I’m not too sure Hughton himself knows who he can bring in or who will be sold yet.

  4. I’d actually forgotten Kishanishvilli was at the club – during his last 2 games I wished he wasn’t! As long as Colo and Taylor aren’t out at the same time I’d be happy with Kadar developing and growing into it.

  5. Campbell on a pay as you play basis would be ok, as long as he wasn’t expecting the big wages he was getting at Notts. County.  Can’t believe I’ve just wrote that. :o

  6. yh i beleive sol will be a better signing than killa as long as he is on a lowish wage n short term contract.

  7. Yeah the money / pay as you play is the key to any such deal but he would be a sub at best behind Colo and Taylor but Im happy to see Kadar fill that bench slot. So not sure I wish to see him here if the above was to be the case. But on another note it depends on Simpson if he does not stay then its R. T and S. T for the RB slot then Campbell would be ok to play along side Colo. There are a hell of a lot of factors to consider in this proposed signing.

  8. Is it just me or are my articles not showing up on NewsNow?
Yesterday I posted a couple and one of them showed up.
I’ve posted one now and 46 minutes later it still hasn’t appeared.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Doocey.

  9. bloody hell, anyone notice what’s happening?
We’re are all AGREEING on the stipulations of signing Sol!!
After the polarisation of fan opinion over the past year or so I cant remember the last time I read a united opinion!

Doocey, It happens from time to time. It’s probably picked it up, but failed to display it on the Newcastle United section. Did you check? Could be issues with a lack of Newcastle United keywords and phrases in your piece.

You can report it at the NewsNow site somewhere.

Sorry I didn’t get back to you before Doocey, I’ve been incredibly busy!

    That could be it.
My Kevin Nolan & Alan Smith article regarding Brum caused some controversy although it was pretty right on. They wouldn’t have removed by ‘blog for that I doubt?
I see this article hasn’t been listed yet either, must be a huge load to get through yet.
No bother Worky, this site is getting more and more popular every day.
    Doocey.

  12. Did the search. Article shows up alright but isn’t being assigned to the Newcastle news it seems.
    This happened to you before?

  13. It’s showed up now after I put Newcastle in the headline.
    Will I report it anyway?
England got a very doable group.
France got Mexico, South Africa and someone else.

  14. Doocey the Brummies were giving your article some stick mate.
As for Sol im not to convinced that he would be worth the wages. but I would take Robert back till the end on the season for free ;)

  15. Not struck on Sol….maybe some years ago but I think his best days are behind him (no gay pun intended Sol just incase your lawyers are  reading).

  16. @toon Factor.

As an American I am delighted as well.  I do not like the fact of having to play England in the first match- would have preferred to play you third after you’ve (presumably) already clinched a spot in the final 16.

  17. Big Dave,

I think you asked me the other day about my conversations with the FSA? Was it you? Anyway, they got back back to me and I will be having yet another discussion with a representative of the Mutual Society Department.

  18. MDS

How did you become a toon fan since your American? I was born  England but have lived in spain most my life so i still support england and couldnt bare having to play spain in the final.

    Komfort

Never mind Jimmy White! VOTE KIM!

  19. I think Campbell could of been a very shrewd signing at the start of the season , but I would of kept him for more than 1 season in the championship so Im not sure the point signing him now, tho he would be a better option than khisvelli

  20. Indeed it did Big Dave but you can’t say it’s a blatant lie. Neither would leave to Brum!
What’s your lot idea’s of England in this World Cup?

  21. @toon factor

I really got into the sport back in ’94 as a teenager.  Was in England on holiday and saw a match at Stamford Bridge (where, inronically, dennis wise scored a brace).   Then the WC was here that summer and I became hooked.  A good friend of mine was a very good local player and who got me into the sport worshipped Shearer and when he went to Newcastle we instantly became supporters.   It used to be hard to follow but not now with the internet and cable TV coverage here in the states.

  22. Cheers worky at 1st I thought NUST was a do’able idea . but as it goes on I am doubting that it is possible. So I think I will be keeping my 1500 gringo’s.
Doocey I often go on yours but dont comment much but it was funny to see how many brummie fans now think that THEY now have a God given right to be in the EPL

  23. england v usa will be amazing but i imagine it will be tight the usa if thay play anything like they did in the confeds will extremely determined and will be quick on the break but hopefully we will overcome that

and lets not forget the mouthwatering tie of argentina v nigeria or what it will become more commonly known as shola v messi argentina must be bricking it

and as for group g……………….north korea dont stand a chance

  24. why would he bring sol or matthew man wht the fuc** why dont he bring something classy like emanulson ajax, david wether , victor mosses, neymar sao polo, to bring nufc to a ggreat place we need players like this not old lossers who r released by clusbs which r lower than us ….which we saw panjdhsjkdh…..wht ever his name was rejected i repet rejected by sefild united and why would some one sign a player like that
