Ram raid! Derby 3 Newcastle 0

This may or may not be the Derby goalscorers...
This may or may not be the Derby goalscorers...
Andy Carroll was already there after being formally charged for assault on Monday but his Newcastle team mates joined him in coming back down to earth with a bump, as our apparent bogey team Derby County turned us over convincingly. After the Friday night demolition of Cardiff, hopes were high of more of the same but Geordie expectations couldn’t have been more spectacularly wrong, with Derby running out 3-0 winners in front of a bumper and boisterous crowd.

Like many, I was restricted to radio commentary and Deb, who was unfortunate enough to be there, will provide us with the gory details all in good time, though some of us may not have the stomach for it. Hughton named an unchanged side, much to the delight of supporters who thought he might revert to a more defensive formation and there was undeniable confidence that we could do some real damage but it all went horribly wrong.

In truth, it sounded like neither side would be capable of creating much in the first half but with minutes remaining until the break, Leon Best of all people was left exposed and when Kris Commons beat him to whip in a cross, Rob Hulse could apparently not fail to score to make it 1-0. Commons was a name mooted by many Mags during the transfer window and would undoubtedly have proven a great acquisition.

As it was, he spent much of tonight tormenting us and when Jonas brought down Michael Tonge, needlessly by all accounts, Commons was on hand to put the penalty kick away. With the black and whites in disarray, Barker put the contest beyond doubt when he capitalised on an uncleared corner to fire through the melee and make it 3-0 and virtually game over.

Despite bringing on all three substitutes, Newcastle never genuinely looked like getting back into the game and the team against who we’ve now collected only two points from a possible twelve in our last four meetings, saw out the game determinedly and resolutely.

The result combined with West Brom’s 2-0 win, means we drop from top spot but with a game in hand. No doubt a kick in the ar*e and some dented pride for all involved but it’s certainly not the first time we’ve played badly this season, just this time we didn’t get away with it. All we can do is dust ourselves down and get on with the next game.

Us – Harper, Simpson, Hall, Williamson, van Aanholt, Routledge, Nolan, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Carroll, Best

Subs – Krul, Kadar, Pancrate, Lovenkrands, Ameobi, Donaldson, Smith

Derby – Bywater, McEveley, Green, Savage, Hulse, Commons, Barker, Pearson, Buxton, Tonge, Hunt

Subs – Teale, Porter, Deeney, Moxey, Martin, Anderson, Vidal

Att – 28, 607 (with somewhere in the region of 3,000 Mags in good voice once again)

  1. 3,100 mags.

The real test is Swansea on saturday, seeing how we bounce back or not will be a good pointer as to where will end up.

  2. Back to earth with a bang!

Bad result , really hope there is any nonsense of calling for Hughton to be sacked , these things happen , we move on

  5. If I were Ranger I´d file a transfer request. What kind of chances has he really gotten? Has he started what one league game? And when he does well he is benched and now he wasn´t even on the bench. Unbelieveable how young players tolerate this sometimes. Feel sorry for him as he´s clearly the most gifted striker at the club. Give him 3 games starting in a row and we´ll have a star on hour hands.

  6. CLiNT – it just sounded like we didn’t play well, I’m not convinced it was the formation. I think a few bad performances and the fact that the new lads are still getting to know each other would have made a difference.

We’re missing three key defensive players in Colo, S Taylor and Enrique. The new recruits have done well but in fairness hadn’t been tested so far. Leicester were poor in the final third, Cardiff were awful. With a bit of creativity from Commons tonight we came unstuck.

  7. After my jury service inevitably finished late today, thought I would be late getting over to Derby and miss kick off so virtually broke the land speed record and got in to hear same team as Friday. Spirits soared at that point but reality soon kicked in. Crap game, just one of those nights. Just got in and bloody freezing. So p***ed off. Will write something up in the morning. To answer your question BBM the away bit was n’t fully sold out but looked pretty full although virtually deserted by full time.

  8. Ok, I don’t want to hear ANYTHING about Hughton’s coaching ability win or lose. As for the team, how many ways can you spell pathetic. If any of you out there think we “deserve” to be in the big leagues you’re nuts. We’re nothing but low rent now.

  9. Johann, you really believe Nile Rangers will be a star after 3 starts?

He might get a shot on target in that time but he certainly won’t be a star. He is over-rated because of his age. Andy Carroll is only two years older and he is leaps and bounds beyond Ranger in terms of scoring – the point of a striker.

Send Ranger out on loan and hope he discovers how to score and he might get some attention. Until then, he belongs in the reserves and on the bench.

  10. batty,
it was the sound of the team cracking before it went kerblam mate.
    :)

bowburn, aye but it coincides nicely with this bad loss, does it not?
But anyway i did put a question mark, did i not?
    ;)
I was inviting a response mate.

  11. Anyhoo,
another pen against & another goal chalked off,
for a foul on ‘our’ player, work that one out.
    Only v Newcastle.

  12. I got that fella… ;)

But in all seriousness it’s a fair question and some might argue that maybe in hindsight we should have been less attack-minded.

Or perhaps the problem was, we didn’t actually play with a more attacking style even though we were set up to do so?
Maybe Deb can answer that one.

  13. Yea, y’right mate.
Something went belly-up & no mistake.
But, i notice there were 28 odd k there, so as per, it’s their cup final, all ‘up for it’ big time. & on a night like that we have to totally turn up, which we obviously didn’t.
Too many basking in the reflected glory of the last game probably & the Carroll ‘bad press’ also coulda ‘upset’ the apple-cart.
    Psychological triggers ‘n stuff?

    What a buzz-kill either way.

  14. Aye sorry Cloughs Army, scandalous of me…

Blame toonsy, I was all for being vague until I got it confirmed ;)

Well done on the three points and all that…

  15. Our ‘cup final’ hmmm that was one of the lowest attendences at home for a league game this season. If we had not had the worst injury list in the clubs history this season we would be streaking ahead of you at the top by now, that side we put out tonight would beat yours week in week out, don’t be suprised to see us towards the play offs at the end of the season so you had better make sure you go up automatically or we may meet again!

  16. Ooooh, a feisty one is Cloughs Army!! :)

In fairness, I read the other day, your average attendance is actually 28,000+. Good turn out for midweek either way.

Hope the Pride Park pitch has improved since I last played there in 2008, it was in gash condition. Geordies beat the Derby Egg boys 8 nowt. Pick that out the net (although in fairness we had all kinds of miscreants playing – mackems the lot…)

All the best, hope to see you up in the Premiership at some point.

  17. CA-What a ridiculous statement to make, quite genuinly laughable.. How you can claim should you not have injuries you’d be sitting at the peak of the league, instead of 18th i believe is where you started tonight?, is beyond me. Every team has to deal with injuries. Had Taylor and Coloccini been fit tonight it would have ended a 0-0 draw. Just as easy for me to say that.

  18. I take it back CA, i’ve checked your att’s, fair enough man.
    Don’t say i never give y’owt. ;)

bowburn, i’m guessing all they really wanted/meant to say was: Yey! we beat ya’.
& deservedly by the sound of it.
    Had y’gan CA.

  19. Average crowd is 29,234 with a highest of 33010 against the red scum and only second to your lot, but I have to say your attendances are fantastic, though to be skirting with relegation and being dubbed the worst team in the premier league, we have a terrific loyal fan base.

We have had some very poor results this season, mainly due to one third of the season blighted by injuries but hopefully we can push on from here and play you lot again soon, always a good atmosphere against the Geordies.

  20. Ross, thats 2 players, at one point we could not even name a full bench because we had so many injuries and had 2 thirds of first teamers out.

We have a healthy fully fit squad now so watch us climb that table!

  21. Hey, we got plenty of defensive’s out, i guess it came home to roost tonight?
Time for a regroup, the record’s snapped, spell broken, maybe we can reboot & go on another 12/15 win streak.

    Howay the Lads!

  22. CA, he didn’t mention Enrique too, our best 3 defenders there like,
& one injured on the night.
    Also,
new defenders trying to get to know each other.
    Shit happens.

  23. Lads what will happen if Pompey get wound up, will there be 4 teams up from the Championship? Top3 then 4-7 playoff?

  24. Even champions lose 10-12 games in the Championship and you do get more results that go against the odds due to several factors. Notts Forest, WBA and ourselves will almost certainly lose more games.

  25. Well, at least forest got beat too.
Crying shame we couldn’t put more points between us & them though.
    Arrrrgggghhh!

  26. (Hoho)

I would like to see/hear what CH have to say about the game.

With Derby still unable to beat them,we will have to win our game-in hand for sure to gain back top-spot.

Also,I do hope CH tells the team to beat those whom they lost/draw to in the early season.

Which includes forest,Scunthorpe, blackpool.Instill them with a revenge in-mind.

  27. not one of you’s identifies the problem!
I said this over the transfer window.
We will now see the slide of the toon if hughton plays his new signings.
We saw it at leicester when jonas and loven were left on the bench and we never looked like scoring.
Yes, i was shocked by the win against cardiff but surely the alarm bells should be ringing after last night. Williamson and fitz hall are not up to it.
Routledge is renowned for going missing and best is worst.

We need to stick with as many of the players who got us to the top instead of playing lower league cast offs which is what we ve bought! !

  28. Here is the Williamson bashing again.

After 3 games of being a wall, he suddenly isn’t good enough for tihs special team apparently.

His face doesn’t fit and he didn’t cost £7 million or higher, more like.

  29. the alarm bells have been there most of this season . we are being hyped up by the media and a lot of fans believe it . we are a mediocre team in a shit league with a yes man of a manager whos tactics leave me scratching my head most of the time .also these anti ashley songs are pathetic.this get out of our club song will get no where coz its his club he owns it not us we are customers so get real even tho the blokes an arsehole .

  30. I was hoping for four points from these two games. If we get get three on saturday then no great harm. next week we have two home games wba have two away games that look a little tough. there are going to be twist and turns just keep the faith.

  31. Anyone still rememb “Steve Watson” our right back who can attack and defence well.

So far no one in the defence side was close to him except our “bull” on the left.

  32. absolute clueless the lot of you!
I was furious when you were all happy with his new signings.
I am capable of identifying good players and not one of the new ones are premier class and all come from struggling sides.
I could even see the glaring problems at cardiff. That could be a result which destroys us cos you fools will keep referring to the game.
Oh but we beat cardiff 5-1, we cant be that bad.
Well from what ive seen we are.
You buy chumpionship players you end up there!
    You’s are clueless!

  33. We’re all doomed!!!! Get a grip lads, we WILL lose the odd game. I remember in the Keegan promotion year when Grimsby beat us 1-0 at home, the doom-mongers were saying we would not go up. Even teams like Man City lose games. We’ll bounce back. We’re still 4 points ahead of Forest with a game in hand. Keep the Faith.

  34. Wise words Shinton…you buy shit you play shit..simple!
I agree non of the recent signings would make an impact in the premiership they are bargain basement buys.

I have said all along I don’t see us going up this season we will be pipped at the post…even if we did get promoted I can’t see Ashley funding the much needed rebuilding program to survive in the top flight.

  35. SpartonChris my thoughts exactley , we were never gonna go the whole season unbeaten and i bet we will lose a few between now and the end , it happens , we shouldnt get carried away with doom n gloom after losing last night as we should not get carried away with our win last friday , where we finish at the end the season that counts and I think ( insert hope , prey etc etc ) we will be promoted as champions
