Newcastle should swoop for free agent Gai Assulin, but probably won’t!

Gai Assulin on a free? Yes please.
Gai Assulin on a free? Yes please.
A bit of interest on the free transfer front today as Barcelona revealed that they would be releasing their Israeli utility player, Gai Assulin. And I believe that Newcastle should be trying all they can to sign him up as soon as soon as possible.

Now I know what you’re thinking, and before I get the deluded tag thrown around at me just hear me out. This is the kind of player that Newcastle should be looking at if they are to ensure their new transfer policy is to work, well in my opinion anyway. In fact it is the kind of player that the club have hinted that they themselves will be looking at with regard to fitting in with this new transfer blueprint, that blueprint being to buy players who won’t depreciate in value whilst they are here.

At only 19-years old and rated highly throughout Europe despite making only a handful of appearances for Barcelona, Assulin would not command a fantastic wage, which would be another tick in the ‘pro’ box from the clubs perspective. In the ‘con’ box however, would be some significant interest from a lot of other clubs for the player. But I guess that is a moot point as I very much doubt we would be going in for him, despite the fact that he ticks all the boxes, from a business perspective anyway. But why?

Well first off, I guess everyone has a differing opinion. Just because I think he would be a fantastic signing doesn’t mean that anyone else will. The same can be applied to managers, and Hughton might just not be interested in the player as opposed to another manger who may want him.

Another factor, which is kind of linked in to the opinion bit above, is whether or not he plays in a position we need. Assulin plays wide right, or behind the striker as an attacking midfielder, so de we need one of them? Well in my opinion, yes we do, and he would cover two positions.

Then there is the question of are we a big enough draw for the player? Probably not, but why not at least enquire? What is the worst that can happen? The player will say no, and we move on. At least it would show some tentative signs that we have an exciting future in store, well for at least a few seasons until the player gets sold for profit!

At the end of the day, Assulin is the kind of player I would like us to be interested in – young, exciting players. I will put this bit in bold for clarification, but there is no indication from anywhere that we are even interested in the player, this is just my opinion.

So this is all speculation, in fact it’s not even that in fairness. It is purely something I would like to see happen. Needless to say that I doubt it will, despite it making so much sense on so many levels.

What d’ya reckon?

  1. I went to Barcelona for El Classico back in December and went to watch Barca’s youth team play in the afternoon, when I seen this guy was playing I was quite excited as I’d heard a lot about him.

I wasn’t impressed though, He seemed very lazy and lost the ball quite often, I’m not surprised Barcelona are releasing him.

  2. He’s been there since 2003 so should be able to get a Spanish Passport…..Wenger looked at him as have Real Madrid.

  3. Rich – Aye, I thought there would be competition. Nee harm in asking though is there, like I said. If you don’t buy a ticket you wont win the raffle.

  4. Fits the clubs criteria, young, free, low wages, dont know how handy he is, having never seen him, but would be worth looking into.

Maybe Chris Hughton reads these blogs and will take heed! :D

  5. Yes sounds like a deal we should make, the guy`s been touted by a number of knowledgeable people as a future star.
That aught to be our policy to bring in one to three good players each season, either youngsters or established pro`s.
I guess everyone is aware it will take some time before we can be competitive, due to the new fiscally conservative policies in place.
There has been talk of getting, Cleverly, .
Wiltshire and Coleman on loan, three youngsters with big futures ahead of them, would certainly make me happy if it turns out to be the case.
But the RB position is still not settled, dont believe either R.Taylor or Simpson are EPL quality, think young Coleman is probably better than both.
But beside loanees there is a need for a decent sized squad,

  6. Best option for us this close season is to sign all the members of the winning U20 WC Ghana team from last year plus Asamoah Gyan and we’re laughing. We’d have to open a new restaurant in The Gate for them all but hey could be interesting (Yams R Us ??)

  7. reports saying the turkish kid turan is talking to two epl clubs toon were looking at him last year, wonder if i can build my hopes up,then no hope

  8. Yep, Turan is certainly a player I would have liked here. That was back in the days when Modric was at the training ground thrashing out a move etc etc.

    Memories :(

  9. Would be cool if at least one African team could go to the final, torn between Uruguay vs Ghana, both play nice football, but hope Ghana can advance simply as the sole African team left in the tournament.

  10. “should have done a deal when we moved emre on”

Apart from the fact that Emre went back to Turkey to play for Fenerbahçe while Ardan was at Galatasaray. They hate each other more than we can ever know thanks to Souness

  11. if he’s not good enough for barca then he aint good enough for the tooooon….& after today it’s only 58 days until wide-load puts us back on the market.

..time for beer , kebab & a couple of birds.

  12. ANDY MAC your right m8,was hopeing they would bite when they knew he was heading back to turkey for that very reason, like most hopes they come to nowt

  13. Spurs are in for that Galatassarey Turkish delight, Turan.
Harry is slowly but surely rebuilding them into a top level side.
But then he has the dosh to do it !
That will be two of our former targets, Turan and Modric,
    ah well !

  14. Dont go there Chuck ! Think of all that money (our money) that Shepherd wasted on Hollywood signings like Owen, Luque, Boumsong – a few bob there !

In 2004 we were way above Spuds in terms of turnover and European football but then it all went tits up and Spuds did what they should do – Invested.

  15. What price do you think KP Boateng and Gyan will be now? I think they would be good additions although Gyan could be another Martins.

i agree with Toonsy with this guy, but fat boy aint gona look into this at all.

  16. Mentioned this on the other thread as i didnt realise there was a new one. Kevin Prince Boateng is having yet another blinder for Ghana. What is his club situation?

  17. still at pompey but wanting to move on. I can see one of our lower half rivals getting in there first

  18. Have I missed something? West Ham have now increased their bid for Lemy from some French club to 11m, as well as bidding 12m for the Brazilian and not to mention a bid in excess of 5m for Dorrans!

    WFT!

  19. assulin is class on football manager mind you.
and where the hell are west ham getting money from!

  20. Andy Mac-There’s been much speculation of Boateng being sold due to the fact that Pompey have been relegated, I just wasn’t sure whether anything had materialised or not. Thought i’d ask on here in case anyone knew given the fact that i dont find the internet to be too trustworthy. Go and look at Wikipedia and it will tell you that he’s been signed by lazio.

  21. The good thing about the Ghana players is they are v good with the ball at their feet, dont panic under pressure and they are good players. I think we will see a couple of them moving to the EPL this summer

  22. Andy-Nah mate I wasnt getting frustrated or anything, more just trying to point out that you get so many different conclusions from browsing the internet that it’s easier just asking a group what the general consensus is, lol.

Apparently Lazio are interested in him. That came straight from the horses mouth so to speak. But given the fact he’s had a great WC i could see him staying in the Premiership. Pompey must be rubbing their hands!

  23. ROSS m8 plus think its better to have a bit banter with the lads,as we all have dif views ;)

  24. Ice-you were loving it man, dont hide the love for Kevin Prince :D haha..He could have buried that header but he was unlucky like.

Cannot believed what i just watched though, cannot believe the penalty in injury time was missed, gotta feel for Ghana I was desperate for them to go through. It was a natural reaction but blatant cheating, Gyan should have buried it and sent them into the semi’s.

Couple of terrible penalties in the shoot out though sadly. Incredibly cool pen to finish it though, cheeky lad but it came off for him.

  25. An intentional hand ball that prevents the ball from going over should be an automatic goal in my opinion.

  26. ROSS as ive said thats holland in the final for me.love PB as much as i love big daves blunt needles lol

  27. MDS – They are debating about that on the radio right now. I just think that’s football. The ref didn’t miss anything, got the decisions correct and Ghana couldn’t capitalise. I feel sorry for them like, but that’s football.

  28. My point is, the ball is 100% going in. If you decide to stop it with your hand the chance of a goal might be 80% (or whatever the penalty conversion rate is). So you are helping yourself by intentionally breaking the rules. I’m not sure I like that…

  29. Uruguay were the better team for the first 105mins slick play, nice interchange, should have had a few. Ghana looked the fitter of the two in the last but over all the best side won.

It was a professional foul that payed off, he will not play any part in the competition, after being arguably their best player and one of the best in the competition.

Dont hold your breath on Holland beating this Uruguay side.

Marcel Desailly, his broken english french accent has now become a broken english african accent… funny that. Should have played for them back in the day should he not?

  30. I just think it was one of those unfortunate twists of fate that happens. Was it a deliberate handball? Yes. Did he get punished to the extent he should have been for a deliberate handball? Yes.

Suarez took one for the team, and I seem to remember Alan Smith took one for the team and got sent off at Cardiff to deny a clear one on one for them. It happens. Ghana just, unfortunately, couldn’t capitalise on it

  31. Is it not two game ban for a straight red, 1 game for 2 yellows? You could be right. Great game tonight.

  34. ide just like too add ghana only have them selfs too blame they couldnt hit a barn door from 6 yards

  35. wow wasn’t Ghana Uruguay a great game ! Both of these teams played with skill intensity and aggression which was missing from our bunch of pufftas ! Late shift put it at the beer garden last night, but it was well worth it, tricky ride back in the dark though with the beer goggles on !

Jaarmany Argies is gonna be another great game, beer garden calling, 30 degrees, get in there ! Hope wor Jonas makes the team, but probably not I would imagine..

  36. Enjoy it Munich,I’m just setting me fry up away,I have to cheer Spain on today, actually really hoping they get to final as I’ll be in Spain for it so would be canny craic to be amongst their fans..ditto for you wi Germany I expect.

  41. aye ice would have preferred Carver too

Buy them nowt icedog….made the mistake of buying her a birthday pressie once, now she expects one every year…wots that all aboot??!!

  42. How much do ya think Anthony Annan would cost, I know Blackburn nearly bought him for about 500k when ince was manager, Which seems ridiculously low.

His price would have rocketed a bit with the world cup but he would a perfect replacement for Butt and would play well with any of Barton, Nolan and Guthrie.

We could unload Smith to everton or blackburn if the really are interested.

  43. sorry like but i think spains run will come to a end now, those south/amr like to put there foot in and heeds elbows ect

  44. I think they’ll win tonight icedog but don’t think they’ll get through the semis

  45. i think it’s time for the cheating latin american teams, italians, portugese,to be banned.

  46. Toonsy

Ive just read on sky that boro are leading the chase for boyd which makes no sense at all, cant see why he would leave rangers if it wasnt for a crack at the premier league.

In the mail they are saying Ledleys tribunal fee will be 750k, I know its not a reliable source but if theres truth we should be in there, Without coming across as a dick you would think we would have more pull than stoke or west brom for a player like him.

“Without coming across as a dick you would think we would have more pull than stoke or west brom for a player like him”

WBA yes, but Stoke? Why? Their an established PL club with ambition and a bit of cash to spend and improve.

  48. Ghana were absolutely fantastic this tournament.

    Andre Ayew (plays for Arles-Avignon)
Prince Boateng – (plays for Portsmouth)
    Jonathan Mensa – (Udinese)
    Anthony Annan – (Rosenberg)
    Asamoah Gyan – (Rennes)

All outstanding young talents that play for clubs we should be able to out muscle. And all under the age of 24!

  49. No Jay Jay

Just dont see how he can cheat a whole continent and not piss some very dangerous people off.

  50. Richietoonn…with your lass mate, treat her mean and keep her keen. I never buy wor lass birthday presents, she buys them for herself and puts my name on the card…easier that way !

Maybe Boyd doesn’t realise the smoggies are in the fizzy pop league the daft wazzock. Anyway, we only want good lads and fighters at the toon this season, hopefully CH has a few lined up. It would be good for us fans if we started to see some transfer movement ! Maybe we need to see the end of the World Cup first…I’m sure fat Mike is ower there slumming it with Del Boy, Wisey and his mates in the toon caravan..

  51. They are also a club that destroys talented footballers play god awful football with a manager who criticized Glen whelan for “trying to play too much football”

The sort of club where rory delap can get a game because he can chuck a ball far, bollocks to the fact he cant run, pass, tackle, shoot or trap a ball to save his life, Sidibe is chosen in front of Tuncay and Beattie.

Decent(ish) technical players like Tonge, Soares and Lawrence play second fiddle to Salif diao, dean whitehead and amdy faye.

Their luck will run out eventually, How long can clubs really struggle to defend a long throw.

They are an insult to the premier league, They along with fat sam have ruined top flight english football.

  52. WAKE UP PEOPLE…..ashley will do the bare miminal,he dosnt care about the club,i carnt believe there is still people on here that think he will come good.MADNESS ATELLS YA

    “No Jay Jay

Just dont see how he can cheat a whole continent and not piss some very dangerous people off.”

May I suggest that these “dangerous people” give themselves a feckin shake and realise it is only a fecking game?

  54. Hitman – Put your spoons away man, nee fecker is talking aboot Ashley

Obessed with him you are

  55. well we should be toonsy, whats this mans plans for taking the club forward.or is he not botherd and just wants his money back.

  56. JJ@102 good point mate, any of those Ghanaian players you mention would be welcome at the Toon, but now after their WC explois there are probably a bunch of clubs sniffing round them.

  57. Sorry but with a World Cup semi final at stake I think most players would have done the same as Suarez.

  58. Hitman – It’s all there in statements what his plans are. If people choose to ignore them then it is their choice. The only cloudiness is the no outlay bollocks, which will be clarified by the end of the window.

    Obsession for men

  59. Rich – All I’ll say is that imagine it was Newcastle in a cup final (long shot I know, but try). Would you want one of our players to take one for the team if it meant we won?

I would. I wouldn’t be overly happy about, but I bet there would be less of a fuss kicked up about it.

Interestingly, if Ghana had have scored that penalty, or won the shootout, would these “dangerous people” still be wanting to get holf of Suarez?

No? Why not? He still cheated didn’t he?

  60. cheers toonsy, well me vivaz is working after being plunged in the bog.but its pure shite, might gan have a look for htc phone.

  61. Hitman – Nvere senn anything like them mate. They are excellent. A mate has one at work and I have had a mess about with it. HTC Dream he has got, but there is a new one coming out aswell soon.

  62. That’s right Toonsy. Most players cheat every game you’ll see a handball,a deliberate foul or a dive. Some have a bearing on the outcome some don’t but it’s always happened and always will, doesn’t make it right and I feel sorry for Ghana but it’s part of the game.

Toonsy, anyone who condones cheating, doesn’t have the best interest of the game at heart.

Its like cheating your score in golf ofr example. You can write down par and it counts but you’ll know it was a bogey.

I can honestly say that if a Newcastle player cheated to stop a certain goal. I would hope he got a big fine a big ban and the team was disqualified. I would not consider it a cup final win in my mind.

Its about integrity. And if a player represented my club like that. I’d be embarrest… And I’d hope they lost the game as punishment.

Its like the Maradona “hand of God” – Maradona for me is nothing more than a cheat and a waste of space.
These players need to be kicked out the game. Before football becomes a game of who cheats best.

The only thing I can say in Suarez defense is that the rules of the game are wrong.
In instances like that – the opposing team should be awarded a “penalty goal” (like in rugby) and he should be sent off for stoping a certain goal.
If he only stopped a goal scoring opportunity – then a penalty and red card would suffice.

  64. Na Richie… My mates girl friend offered them to me, but he had just sold them 5 minutes before she spoke to him.

Still, its gona be a great game. I’m gona gona take the Gautrain to Sandton and watch at the square – thousands of German and Argentine fans based there so should be a good vibe.

  65. Simple rule changes like that, and a review panel for sitings after the game would quickly put a stop to cheating and playacting in games. And we’d have far better football with referees left to concentrate on the football decisions. Not players insolence.

  66. i dont no y newcastle dont go four kevin prince boateng only23 and lucks liea world cass player in the world cup but dont think welgo 4 hi hope we do :)

  67. JJ

It just happens that Maradonna is the best player to ever play the game, to call him a cheat is like calling every player presently playing a cheat.

Face it diving has become part and parcel of the game, we don`t like it but it`s a fact of life, look at Henri`s handball for France.

So would you deprive the public of their talents because of one incident, face it each was fouled against more than fouled by, but because of who they are it becomes expanded out of all proportion.

Unfortunately, cultural differences and the import of foreign players have brought about questionable ethical standards to the EPL, changing the game and the way it`s played.
I have to admit, they for the most part have improved the game, both technically and tactically, however with that comes academy award winning dives, with shirt pulling and grabbing dance partners in the box prevalent.

What to do ? tell me ! the answer is not by banning people, for sure.

  68. Funny how everyone sceams for ‘vid evidence’ for goals over the line etc. to cut down on ‘wrong results’, yet accept cheating as part of the game?
More refs, vid evidence, cut out the cheating=Proper results & just maybe, a few other teams winning things.
Ok, probably not. What a dumb idea.
    :)
