Carlton Cole to the Toon?

Carlton Cole

Toon target?

Rumours suggest that Carlton Cole may be on his way to Newcastle United.

There are strong rumours from all quarters that Newcastle are lining up a bid for West Ham’s Carlton Cole.

Alan Pardew took Carlton Cole to West Ham in 2006 and he now allegedly wants to bring him to Newcastle.

Relegation will mean that West Ham need to save on costs and the England international could be available for as little as £7m.

Cole is 6ft 3in long, 27 years-old and has scored 52 goals in 248 appearances, including 11 in 36 appearances for West Ham this season.

Apparently Fulham are also interested in the player as the scramble to exploit the relegated team’s misfortunes heats up.

This could of course all be gossip and speculation but the rumour seems to have spread widely, making me wonder if there’s any truth in it.

My finger in the air assessment – based on comments I’ve read previously – is that a lot of Toon fans would see this as a bad move and Cole would probably not be their first choice as an Andy Carroll replacement.

West Ham are relegated with debts of about £80m and they will be searching for a new manager if Avram Grant leaves as anticipated. Their first choice is allegedly Norwich City’s Paul Lambert but he’s said not to be keen and their second choice – Steve McClaren – apparently ruled himself out last night.

So, what do you think of the prospect of Carlton Cole lining up in black and white?

At the reported £7 million he is still overpriced. Pards has said the European Market has fairer prices and better players. C Cole gets into the England squads regularly and perhaps he could be the orthadox no9 to put away all the chances HBA and nzog/gervinho creat for him

Carlton Cole is horrendous! He couldn’t even command a regular place in west ham’s god awful team. This guy will make shola look special. Bad attitude; poor goal scoring record and exactly the sort off player we got rid off a few seasons back. This would be a massive step backwards for us. I’d rather use a much hungrier Leon best or Nile ranger! I’m keeping everything crossed that this doesn’t happen. I’d much prefer to take demba ba or freddie sears…this could spoil my whole summer :-(

While I dont think this is great news. It may not be as bad as it seems. He is a big lad, will be cheap and as we have seen Leon Best has been good for us and we slated that signing. A new club could give him a lease of life. And lets not forget an expensive name signing does not always bear fruit either. At least if he is rubbish he wont of cost us a lot and he could be moved on with us getting most of our money back. It would be irresponsible of us to splash all our AC money on 2 players who come with a reputation but who dont perform in the prem.

you gotta be kidding me…….7 million quid for a 27 year old striker of a relegated team with a scoring recored of 1 goal per five games?? And you think 7 million is a knock down price. I think he is no better than loven or ameobi. We need a 1st lass striker who virtually picks himself every week due to his ability and goals scored…a 7 million quid squad player that cant score goals is a joke. i would perhaps ship out ameobi for 3 million and bring in cole at same price… a like for like deal. Thats about it though. ffs what a joke.

Can’t see it. We’ve got one of the best scouts in the country spending a lot of time in Europe. This, I hope, is lazy hacks putting Pardew and Cole back together because we need a striker and West Ham will be having a fire sale. Wouldn’t want him taking up space on the wage bill. Not good enough.

if ashley were to put a bid in for cole,it would probably be,his customary 1.5mil.if that gets knocked back 1.75mil,if that gets knocked back,a final bid of 2mil,west ham will say it’s an insult, then we’ll hear no more about it,hopefully.

19……….nothing would suprise me with this shower of sh1t. he will see it as they we have came through the first time back with relative ease with zero investment and 35 million made ontop of the tv rights etc. He will now therefore be thinking, well, if we could do it so easy with so many players injured then it will be even easier next season or at worst we will still make it through without another season of investment…thus meaning he can pocket another 20-30 million quid of tv revenue money that should have in reality been spent.

    avatar FlashJonas says:

Carlton Cole, now the majority seem to think this guy has no talent and is not good enough to play for the toon. Your wrong. I for one would love to see him here, he is a very good forward, he is a big lad, has pace and causes defenders problems, and he is better than all of our strikers. He is a better all round player than Andy Carroll and i am confident this lad will score goals for us, he was playing in a underperforming side and has struggled with injury, especially last season, but he is a good striker and i would be happy to see him.

  26. 26
    avatar Macas says:

The bits I’ve seen of him this season he has looked decent, although I’d rather get Demba Ba as it’s rumoured he can leave on a free transfer. Not quite sure what fans expect in this transfer window to be honest. It’s probably a wild rumour anyway but he isn’t the worst player in the world and may do well for us.

  27. 27

@24……..if he is so good a striker how come is goal ratio os worse than strollers? at the very best he is another very average player that will not exactly have the defences of the prem league shacking in their boots and will make no difference to us in terms of quality. for me, you could flip a coin between him and shola, they of the same quality, so therefore… whats the point?

Flash Jonas> What drugs are u on u utter moron? So Carlton Cole is a better all round player than Carroll is he? I am guessing u are actually Cole’s agent because that is the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever heard.

Cole is an awful, awful striker and at 7million quid! Lunacy, sheer lunacy if that turns out to be true.

This is the sort of signing we would have made in the past. In my opinion Carlton Cole is in the same league as Shola Ameobi and that is nowhere good enough to be playing in the Premiership. He would just be another Marlon Harewood, another Mark Viduka, slow and lazy. In fact if you look at the West Ham versus Wigan game from Saturday he somehow contrived to miss the simplest of chances ata vital part of the proceedings. Depending on how you look at things he may well have cost Avram Grant his job. I’m fed up with these sort of signings. I’ve applied to renew my season ticket for next season but like many am very very close to having had enough. If Carlyon Cole arrives in Toon then next season will very likely be my last.

  36. 36

Just read the FlashJonas comment above who thinks Carlton Cole is better than Andy Carroll. Take it you no absolutely nothing about football then mate.

I relly hope it’s just predictable hacks putting West Ham’s relegation, and Pardew’s previous association with Cole together.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that (much better) Demba Ba gadgie wanted out after being relegated then being subjected to an assault from one of his own fans.

Depending on what his wages were we could take him (Demba Ba) on a short term deal or on loan. It would be risky but he clearly has great ability and would fit our style of play. Dan Sturridge would be ideal but might be out of our feasible price range.

Needless to say, Carlton Cole is a definite “no thank you”.

I know we have more than enough depth in the centre of midfield, but Hitzlsperger’s passing and shooting in the few games he’s played have been great. But may not be a good fit for us.

All the teams up for relegation have quality but maybe we shouldn’t do too much scavenging.

Carlton Cole, I hope not, he had a brief bright spell for WHU a couple of years ago, has done nought since, not enough to spend £7m on way. Even worse is the rumor that Drogba may be coming to the Toon for £7/8m, would have been good 3 years ago, not now, the bloke is 33! Surely we are not going down that road ago, paying a fortune for over-the-hill players looking for a last big pay packet before they retire!
