Gervinho and Gameiro appear to be non-starters for the Toon

Gervinho snubs Newcastle in favour of Champions League football.
Gervinho: Champions League for me
Some of Newcastle United’s tipped transfer targets seem to have shut the door on a move to Tyneside.

As with any transfer speculation bear in mind that it is indeed just speculation, but two players the club was said to be interested in were Gervinho and Kevin Gameiro.

It seems however that both players have slammed the door on our club (assuming said speculation was true in the first place of course).

Lille and Ivory Coast striker Gervinho (whose real name is Gervais Yao Kouassi) has said he will only consider a move to clubs who are playing in the Champions League:

I am trying my best to concentrate on the final push for the league. We want to win the championship. Also, we are in the cup final.

At the end of the season, my advisers and I will speak to the club and see what to do, but if I am leaving a club which will play in the Champions League I will only go to one who is in the Champions League. It is the best competition and I want to be a part of that set-up every year.

That would seem to rule us out for the 23 year-old who has 25 goals in 54 matches for Lille.

And apparently Lorient forward Kevin Gameiro (48 goals in 103 games for Lorient) has told French radio that he wants to move to a club in the Spanish Primera Liga, so if we want him the entire Toon will have to up sticks and move to Madrid.

More unsubstantiated speculation has Newcastle interested in Cheikh M’Bengue and Franck Tabanou – both from Toulouse – as potential replacements for Jose Enrique if/when he leaves in the summer.

Tabanou in particular looks quite versatile as it seems he’s happy to play at either left back or on the left wing. He’s 22 years old and has 8 goals in 72 games for Toulouse.

But of course it’s all most likely a load of guesswork by the press anyway, who I trust about as much as an MP’s expenses claim.

  1. aye tez wud love vela lyk we need pacey strikers hu r young and he is 1. rekon 12 mil wud du lyk. if hes o.k playing 4 WB on loan hed b great here to go with benny boy but i also think we need a player lyk shearer esque y’know a good all round striker hus gud with his head to get the best out of barton lyk. still i think our transfer list shud be vela 12mil. m’bengue 6mil, lens or dzudulak or a winger similar to these between 8 to 12mil and maybe a few frees and a 1 of a kind carr pik

  2. vela is a small pacey striker and has only scored 5 goals this season in21 apps.
Ok but i think we need a tall target player like we had with carroll aswell.
Preferably one who scores 20+ goals a season. I know that will cost a big chunk of cash, but it has got to be worth it if we want to move on from where we are now.

  3. Of course he’d be a wicked addition- while we’re on, I hope pards has at least enquired with Barca over the availability of Messi. What about rooney? He nearly joined us before- maybe now ay? Your dreaming sonna. Think Reo-Coker and you’re closer to the mark

  4. how are we dreaming by thinking ov vela , duznt get a game at arsenal and he hasnt set the world alight yet to warrent big clubs wanting him. howay bud did u nt think arfa is 2 gud 4 us and even tiote. this club still has great pull and i think hed b in owa reach

  5. i know this might not be a popular choice and i dont even like the fella but peter crouch would be perfect for us i think. hes superb and nodding down crosses even if he doesnt score that many. he would be the perfect foil for barton and i reckon £8mil would get him.

  6. Vela???

You have been playing too much Football Manager !!!

…on that note – we should snap up Václav Kadlec !!!

  7. Tell me something I don’t know! we are looking at the likes of Koncheskey and Carlton Cole no doubt

  8. Think Cole is the wrong side of 27 for us to show any interest (fingers crossed) plus do we really want to be looking for players from relegated teams??
He has only scored 11 goals this season ffs.
BIG BIG dissappointment if we go for someone like this.
    So probably nailed on then.

  9. @FTW

lol – Vela is hardly the unknown random player in Football manager. He has been about the fringe of the Arsenal team for quite a while now and has has some impressive displays for them. They have a few good players that are near the 1st team but could be tempted by 1st team football if they dont get at Arsenal.
If we are looking for more creative players, I think he is a decent choice if Arsenal were willing to let him leave.(Can play as a striker, att mid or out wide)..

  10. beardsleys boots,i’ve learned during the ashley tenure, dont expect anything, and you wont be disappointed.

  11. I think we’ll have to just get by with the Messi + 50mil for Shola swap deal that’s about to go ahead. Although I’m not too sure on this kid to be honest =/ He’s no Foluwashola!

  12. Defoe will leave spurs in the summer. Fact! Don’t know where to but he is off. Harry wants a new line up of forwards.

I don’t know bout crouch tho we will have to wait and see
