Could first-choice striker promise yet persuade Erdinç to join Newcastle?

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has not yet given up on the prospect of signing Mevlüt Erdinç despite the player’s apparent preference to stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

There may be some downtime in the transfer market while Newcastle tour the US, but speculation that the club haven’t yet given up their hopes of signing Mevlüt Erdinç continues. According to the press, anyway.

A little while back, Erdinç stated that his preference is to stay at Paris Saint-Germain after being given assurances that he won’t be completely sidelined but the incoming transfers of players like Kevin Gameiro and – potentially – Mauro Zarate.

In fact, Erdinç played for PSG on Wednesday in their pre-season match against Brighton, although he was used to plug a gap on the right wing after Guillaume Hoarau and Kevin Gameiro were give the two front positions. It’s possible that things like that might force Erdinç to reconsider a move to Newcastle where he would most likely be the first choice striker.

Our £7m move for the player broke down a few backs but, if Erdinç is unhappy about the prospect of a future as a right winger or ‘gap-plugging player’ at PSG, we might yet stand a chance of getting the player this summer, particularly if we go back to PSG with a slightly improved offer.

The Daily Mail suggested that Alan Pardew would get ‘official’ news yesterday about whether he has any chance of signing Erdinç, although if he did it hasn’t made it into the press yet.

Alan Pardew is said to be a huge fan of the 24 year-old, who has 53 goals in 155 appearances for his career (28 in 70 for PSG), and back in June our manager said:

“Erding has always been on our radar.”

He was allegedly Pardew’s second choice after any hopes of signing Kevin Gameiro were dashed.

It seems unlikely that Newcastle have ever seriously contemplated Daniel Sturridge, whose estimated value ranges widely between £7m and £20m, despite a large portions of the fans seeing him as the ideal target.

It is more likely that the club would go for someone like Reading’s Shane Long is the prospect of signing Erdinç disappears completely.

The deal has always been on, imo the holdup is Erdinc is due a bonus if he is still at PSG at the end of July and erdinc’s agent wanted Newcastle to cover this lost money before the transfer would go ahead, Newcastle have refused for obvious reasons and are waiting until august until they complete the deal, as far as i’m aware all details have already been sorted i.e transfer fee and wages it’s just the hold up of this bonus payment

    Either Erdinç pressures his agent or we pay it.

  5. Yet another example of greed imo. He’s sure to be on a higher salary at NUFC which would more than compensate for any lost bonus, over time. But as usual, they want their cake and eat it.

  6. Stop mucking around get this guy in would be deadly as hell with ba upfront really could be great partnership. With erdinc’s pace and skill and ba’s finishing this would be a great partnership for the future.

  10. It’s not Erdinç, it’s his agent playing hardball.

    The agent is doing his job, trying to get the best deal for Erdinç (& himself).

    It’s a waiting game … I think we’ll get him.

  16. If his preference is to stay at psg thanet him be… The last thing we need is players that do not wish to play for our club. I say ditch him and Chase a qaulity out of favour player like jermaine defoe!!!! We are a big enough club and deserve better….

  20. The concern about Erdinc is that he’s considered to be surplus to requirements at PSG who have taken out alleged first choice instead ?

    If there’s only one striker coming in before the window closes, I’d prefer Long to Erdinc as I think Long can improve even at the top level, not sure Erdinc can ?

    WTF we cant set our sights a little higher than either of the above is way beyond me ? Over to you skinflint ?

  21. Ditto what chuck says C12, home bred players like Shola might have a degree of committment to their local team but why should foreign players. It’s more a question of who wants them the most than t’other way round.

  24. the way i see it at the min (and this is really looking on the positive side) if the plan is to play one up front acting as target/holding centre forward and one behind in support kind of a free role type

    you have ba, shola and best to act as your leading centre forwards

    that leaves you with HBA and lovenkrands to play in the support role behind! so i dont think the club will buy a striker unless best leaves

    i dont belive it will be for a considerable amout of money should we bring one in as a replacement aswell

    I have to scan alot of sites to see what’s gannin’ on geordiedug. I saw that one on Newsnow’s Newcastle United page and I could see immediately that it was what you were telling me. More or less everyone copies each other’s stories sometimes I suppose, I wouldn’t say that I was necessatily above it myself either, but if I do I like to add something, some kind of insight or angle that another story doesn’t have to justify it’s existence.

    On the other thing, I haven’t actually seen enough football yet to guess what Pardew’s tactical masterplan is going to be, though he did broadcast his thoughts about Ben Arfa in a role just behind the striker rather than on on the flanks. I think there’s a bit of experimenting gannin’ on too see which of the more peripheral members of the squad could play a role in the coming season, and I did notice that he used a 4-2-3-1 formation against Darlo, which I wrote a ‘blog about because no-one else was ;-)

    on buying players in general, not just strikers, well, I know it’s a bit of a cliche now, but I just see Ashley at the roulette table, buying up players who are very talented and with potential, but relatively cheap because they’re contracts have expired and/or they have things hanging over them and hoping that the gamble comes off and he can make a considerable profit on them. That’s his style for aquiring brands too.

    its mayhem by the sounds of it in orlando we have a huge following there from new york and you will see the massive flag with the toon army nyc logo on it so i will keep you up to date with any feeback i get from the boys. im off to coulmbus early monday morning so hopefully i will get a look at training and meet a few of the players

    as formations go i dont really know what his plans are either but i cant see hba in any other role than behind the striker which would only make room for 1 out and out centre forward so the pressure i suppose would be shared by ba best and shola then it would make sense to me for lovenkrands and maybe maverux to be cover for hba?

    yeah i do believe what keegan said that the club would put bids in knowing they would get turned down! i suppose we will know the full scale of his policy come the close of the window but if we aint going for strikers surly we will invest in a decent replacement for enrique?
