Chelsea vs Newcastle United match banter!

Chelsea v Newcastle United.
Here's hoping it goes like last time!
Venue: Stamford Bridge, London.
Date: Saturday 25th August, 2012.
Kick-Off: 5:30pm.
Referee: Phil Dowd.
UK TV: ESPN / HD.

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our “match banter” feature for this evening’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A repeat of our last fixture here would be just what the doctor ordered, though of course, it took two very remarkable goals to pull that one off. As Chelsea manager, Roberto di Matteo pointed out though, Newcastle United do actually have a very good record at Stamford Bridge. Despite the home advantage, Chelsea haven’t actually beaten us there since 2007, which is a fairly remarkable record against such strong opposition on their own turf. Having written that though, we have only won one in eighteen Premiership encounters at Stamford Bridge, and the fact remains that this should be one of our most difficult encounters. As is usual with the Pensioners, they have made some remarkable additions to their squad since last time, not least the remarkable Eden Hazard. Still, we have the remarkable Benny in a similar role, and he was somewhat cheaper, not to mention the hero of our last gane at Stamford Bridge, though he is still warming up this season. Let’s hope he can recapture some of last season’s remarkable form at the Bridge this evening.

One player Chelsea will be without this evening though is Didier Drogba, who left the club for even bigger wages than he was getting already to play in Shanghai. Still, I’ll spare you the waffle in this piece, as my colleague Jimbob has already prepared an excellent match preview for this game, which already has lots of fascinating background stuff to read in the run up. I have also done another piece too on the remarkable fall and rise of both Roberto di Matteo and Alan Pardew.

Which only leaves it for me to say that I will be posting the team sheets for the game below when they become available, as well as highlights, and hopefully, a video of the whole game too in the fullness of time. As usual, I will also be posting some links for the game for thise overseas, though the game will be broadcast in the UK on ESPN.

Howay the Lads!

“sounds like the game may not go ahead?!”

??? Looks like it’s going ahead here, flounder. Tiote is out though.

  2. Chuck: you picked Anita and Cisse to start and I was wrong, again. I might even listen to you next time :)

  3. Nope. Just disheartened after seeing what can happen when a formation matches the squad in the Swansea match.

  4. great british summer it is raining so hard my sky signal has gone cat see a fking thing whats thescore

  5. nothing violent or anything but an obvious late kick on the leg after the ball was past him. Had Colo covering though-really wasn’t necessary.

  6. Challenge wasn’t that bad, just left a leg out and tried to pull back but torres was already diving. Haha.

  7. We’re too deep yet again, HBA having to come back for the ball way beyond the halfway line. Outnumbered in midfield because we’re playing 4-4-2 :(

What does this pillock need to have shoved up his backside before he breaks away from same old same old ??????

  8. thanks guys sounds like a bit of a lesson in the prem for anita he looked good early on I hope he learns from it. I am going to get cable ffs.

  9. Torres booked for simulation.

Yeah, in this sort of game in 4-4-2 HBA spends half his time at fullback. Absurd, but apparently we just don’t know what we’re talking about…

“thunder and lightning no signal again why the fk did i move to yorkshire”

1-0 to them. Try the Bloodzeed stream if it’s that bad sammyj. It’s on the list linked to in comment number 1.

  11. OK I didnt write this but……………..

“Newcastle have undoubtedly gained a lot from Pardew’s high level of hands-on training ground instruction in how he wants his team to play. It appears that the downside to this is an understandable tactical inflexibility during games when a change would seem to be of benefit”

He’s got a fecking brilliant squad who could easily match teams like Chelski if they were set up properly.

  12. It’s exactly what the commentator says: this formation shackles HBA (and Cabaye). We’ve had lots of spells of possession but no quality service to the forwards.

And 8 behind the ball isn’t necessarily the most effective way to defend, anyway.

    FFS

  13. Set up defensively against a strong attacking side that has a weak back 4. Way to exploit the game!

  14. Not really enjoying Pardew’s brand of football….we hardly get anything on target and always seem to just sit back.

  15. Lets give Chelski the freedom of the park, not trouble the three in midfield and leave our TWO FORWARDS UP FRONT with no service !

Substitute at least another twenty clubs for Chelski in games I’ve seen with Pardwho in charge !

  16. Always waiting till half time to make a so obviously needed change. And we’ve just paid for it really. Got lucky against Spurs. At least they dropped points today.

  17. Haha Same JB….wish we could just Attack or at least get some good balls into BA and Cisse….I think they need to be played seperate.

  18. So bloody obvious it would happen. It always happens. I dunno why he has such an erection for this set up.

It’s not the fact we’re 2-0 down, it’s just we could play this way all day and get nowhere.

  19. Bloody grumpy lot!

I’m sure that Pardew will be inspired like Rafa Benitez in the 2005 Champions League final. We’ll go 3-4-3, produce a masterclass and win the game 3-2.

    Just wait.

  20. SJT, I think Ba needs to be pushed to the left and we need to go 4-3-3 / 4-5-1. But I’m bored of talking about it. It will always be the set up you see today 90% of the time.

  21. Somewhere on the web is a stat that tells us Pardwho has never managed to win a game when we’ve gone behind.

  22. Andy, I said that last season in a match preview. It’s true, under him we haven’t. Even one goal down.

  23. oh fk were loosing at chelsea pardews sht our players are crp bring back big sam he wouldnt play this way! Or get us into Europe!!!
    Think back 24 months boys

You are typical of those who frequent other sites where no knowledge of football is a prerequisite !

    Read this :

“He’s got a fecking brilliant squad who could easily match teams like Chelski if they were set up properly”

and understand what it says !!!!!

  25. andy mac
we challenged for a top 4 finish till the last match of the season last year, wait a few weeks before you bring out the sack the manager/ board and everyone else chants

  26. Here’s a question for you Sammy D.

How does HBA manage to affect a game when he’s constantly picking up the ball inside his own half ? He’s an attacking midfielder not a fecking DM.

Once or twice in his career he can beat four or five players on his way to goal but they’re not at the level of Mata, Hazard, Ramires etc.

  27. Santon’s got to play on the right. He always has to cut in it’s too predictable if Pardew wants a 4-4-2 with wingers and crosses.

  28. The worst part about this shabby performance is that the media and most fans like Sammy D will point to a Thursday night game as the reason for our tepid display today !

  29. Andy mac
ffs I am not disagreeing with your choice of tactics but a bit less negativity please.Loved watching keegans and robsons teams, one of the best nights of my life was at the san siro but we still won fk all if we are 16th at the end season i will doff my cap to you and comment no more

  30. Cisse’s not been his best through pre-season and these first few games. Agree with Benny he’s on some form.

We have got a bit better in the second half to be fair Andy. We were disappointing and predictable in the first though admittedly.

So show me where anyone on this blog has asked for Pardwho’s sacking ????

The “Negativity” as you call it or the “Realism” as the rest of us see it, is based around watching the same old tired formation being selected week after week by a bloke who doesnt realise what a bunch of gifted players he has at his disposal !

If Pardwho wants to play 4-4-2 then he’ll have to get some wingers in who can deliver the ball into the box for his two forwards. Otherwise lets try a novel idea and play to our strengths ?

  34. workyticket says:

“We have got a bit better in the second half to be fair Andy. We were disappointing and predictable in the first though admittedly”

So because we’re better than shlte, thats an improvement ?

    FFS WT stop this !

  35. We should always play 4-3-3 as we are deadly and play well. That or 4-5-1 and no damn 4-4-2. It is out dated and we always play rubbish with it.

  36. Will be interesting to see how we go about the Villa game. Anything but 3 points there isn’t going to go down well.

  37. andy mac
if realism is what you are about then argue against a good fifth place finish last year on a meagre budget,as ive already said if you are right and pards is shite then i will hail I am not worthy of the same text as your geat wisdom, for i know nothing of foooootball life sarcasm or anything else, and as i write this chelsea have won as they usually do at home, apart from when pardews team won there last year.

  38. Not annoyed we lost to Chelsea. Just frustrating the way we set up. As Andy said above, the players we have are not for a 4-4-2. We’re not Stoke. Cisse looks off pace, but Ben Arfa looks up for it. He’s getting more involved. Shame he’s not in a system which suits him.

    Oh well. On to Villa…

  39. Hate to be so negative today but feels like we could have got something from this match if we played a bit smarter. Santon getting better every game IMO.

  40. Put it this way: I can’t understand how Pardew looks at this squad and thinks, yeah: 4-4-2. We don’t have cross-producing wingers. We do have excellent defensive center mids and attacking mids. It’s frustrating that we can get better service to the forwards given the talent we have in midfield. It’s because they’re misused. At our best last season, we played 4-4-3.

  41. Right though, not a terrible result. Anita showed some good things. I would have taken 2 points out of the first two matches before we started if I’m honest.

  42. jimbob
I would like to see hba in a free role, wonder what defences would make of him doing what ever he fancied in front of them

  43. “and as i write this chelsea have won as they usually do at home, apart from when pardews team won there last year”

WTF ??? Jeez I thought all the shlte spouting went on .co.uk ? We beat Chelsea 4-3 in the LC in the previous season and drew 2-2 in the league and 2-0 last season ?

Stop the BS sammy d and tell us all what was good about todays performance and what did Pardwho do right ?

  44. maze202
agree santon will be up there with the best in europe, and he is not playing in his favoured position.

  45. andy mac
what was good about todays performance?
not alot really, formation not good (as you have said)a bit lacking on creative freedom for our flare players b ut i blame it on tiredness from thursday night just as you said i would earlier! Fme andy mac your a prophet.

  46. If there was any debate at the end of the season last year what formation we should play, the past two games have settled it. and I know most on here have already said it. NO MORE 4-4-2.

It is SO predictable. Ba and Cisse constantly run into each other, and get no support from the outside when they do manage to hold it up, as Ben Arfa and others are too far back the pitch to provide any support in time. In both games, once we pushed Benny farther up the pitch and made the switch, we played much, much better. Absolutely drives me nuts watching us start the games the way we have.

That being said, the difference in that game was about £80 million. Not much to be done to stop Hazard and even the big flopper himself when they play well.

  47. Sammy d, we kind of saw Ben Arfa ‘free’, when he was in that three man attack in a 4-3-3. He was excellent. He’s not suited to a 4-4-2 stuck on the wing in my opinion.

Maze202, Santon is getting better, but I still feel he would do more on the right. He doesn’t have a left foot really. He keeps cutting in, then you see Jonas overlapping him, but he too isn’t left footed. Jonas is much more influential in the centre of the pitch.

  48. jimbob
agree, but where do we go from here? play everything through the middle and give the flare their chance or put on the wingers and let the dembas have their chance ,I dont know the answers I just back the lads through good and bad as i have for the last forty odd years.
lets give villa a good hiding and hope we can laugh at them if they go down to return the favour!

Aye Jimbob, but Benny isn’t on his primary foot on the right hand side either and he keeps cutting in, but he’s great. So, we have Jonas and Santon on the left on their wrong feet, and Benny on the right on his wrong foot too. It’s a funny old game.

  50. WHAT DOES ANY ONE THINK OF PUTTING IN A BIG OFFER FOR FELANI FROM EVERTON WOULD BE A CLASS SIGNING OFFER 15 MILL AND GOSLING BACK OR SIMPSON

  51. WOULD ANY ONE LIKE US TO PUT IN A CHEEKY BID OF 15 MILL FOR FELANI OF EVERTON PLUS GOSLING OR SIMPSON THINK HE WOULD BE A CLASS SIGNING

  52. Well we were playing the “European Champions” to-day.
And yes we played like a side that has no plan, couldnt get it out of our own end, could’nt string three or four passes to-gether, unless they were lateral.

Lotta route one hail mary hoofs to our forwards, otherwise we may have never got the ball across the midway line.

We appeared to improve in the second period, but that was because Chelsea were sitting on a two goal lead and content to defend.

A very frustrating game to watch.

Hey! i know we have the players, but we dont have a manager who can provide them with both the guidance and a tactical plan that allows them to play to their potential.

It’s becoming more obvious to most, that this guy will never be able to lead the side to any success, as he does’nt appear to understand how to play the modern game.

I have no clue about the quality of our coaches or what they feel about the tactical side of things.

But to-day we played an awfull game, with occasional runs made by Santon and HBA, which went unsupported.

We never looked as if we would or could score, a side that played the same way for the full ninety minutes, never adjusting or changing tactics.

This does not bode well for the rest of the season, if we continue in this manner.

  53. And yeah i’m calling for a new manager, was appalled when he was announced as our manager and nothing has caused me to change my mind since.
And why Ashley gave this guy a five year deal, only he knows ?

  54. Well so far they have had good results, but they had a good seson last year, which was the last time i saw them play.
So i’m going to reserve judgement until then, same as every other side.
I suspect you want me to comment on your hero, but he was also one of my favorite players (Laudrup)and it’s too early to know yet, what kind of success he will achieve as a manager.
    Only time will tell?

“it’s too early to know yet, what kind of success he will achieve as a manager.

Chuck, he was manager of Brondby, Getafe, Spartak Moscow and Mallorca before he went to Swansea. He’s won 5 trophies in Denmark and been a Copa del Rey finalist with Getafe.

I’ve watched both full games and they’re not just passing it a few feet to each other in their own half, they’re getting forward and making killer passes which just slice through opposition defences.

  56. would any one like nani from manure as he not wanted there worth asking for a lone with option to bye or ask chelski season lone for sturridge

  57. Workey
OK i can buy what you’r selling, got nowt against Laudrup, in fact wish we had him at NUFC.
Actully would accept just about anyone in place of who we are unfortunate enough to have right now.
    A bullshitter!
But i make up my own mind on both managers and players and as i have yet to see most sides, would be no more than speculation or going on what you say and you know we dont always agree.
    And why would we ?
