Greek Cup Final 2012 – Olympiacos 2 – 1 Atromitos (AET)

I just thought I’d include this post as a kind of addendum to Andymac’s excellent Atromios v Newcastle United match preview for this evening’s game, which kicks off at 6:00pm.

Atromitos have been losing finalists in the last two Greek Cup finals. The first one ended in a convincing 0-3 beating at the hands of Athenian neighbours, AEK Athens. However that game was more notable for real beatings as the infamous AEK hooligans decided to celebrate by starting a riot just before the end of the game, invading the pitch and attacking Atromitos players.

However, the last one against the Super League champions of Olympiacos was a much closer affair, and had to be decided in extra time after the game was deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of normal time. The goals came from Olympicos’s Algerian assassin, Rafik Djebbour in the 29th minute, and then an eqaliser from Atromitos’s Argentinian defensive midfielder, Walter Iglesias in the 70th. The game was finally decided in the 119th minute with a goal from Olympiacos’s Spanish midfielder, David Fuster Torrijos.

Anyway, as you can see, I have included some highlights of the 2012 final above so you can get a very rough impression of what the lads will be up against this evening, as well as a highlights of Atromitos and AEK Athens in the previous 2011 Cup final and a short video of the riot at the end!

As usual, I will also be doing our usual “match banter” post which should be published around an hour before kick off, and we shall try to post links for the game along with all the other info we can find. In case you don’t know already, the match will be broadcast on Premier Sports (Sky channel 428) You will have to subscibe to get it on cable if you haven’t already. They will also be running a stream on their website (UK only), but once again a subscription is required. If there are any more available for those who aren’t in the UK, I will try to post links of them on our match banter post later on.

  1. Very hard to judge a team after just a couple of youtube clips.

One thing I did notice was even though the score may have been close in the 2-1 Olympiacos defeat but Olympiacos must have had more than a dozen shots to Atromitos couple or so.

And the 3-0 hammering was against a team that I think our team could handle most days of the weak.

I think we’ll have just about enough to beat them tonight even considering the high temperature and slightly younger team than usual.

BUT that’s if and only if NONE of them think it will be a cakewalk because it definitely won’t be. The Greeks will be well up for it.

I think that was the overall message we were trying to get across GD. I’m concerned about Pardwho’s lack of experience in Europe as well as his inability to change things if its going pear shaped. However the only way to gain experience is do the job so we’ll have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
