What must Debuchy and Cabaye think about this Anita deal?

Posted on August 16th, 2012 | 129 Comments |

Vurnon Anita.
It's that man again, but what about Debuchy (and Cabaye)?
So it has come from the horse’s mouth, well, Vurnon Anita’s mouth anyway, that Ajax and Newcastle United have agreed a fee of around €8.5 million, or around £6.7 million plus bonuses for Vurnon Anita.

A medical supposedly happened yesterday, though there doesn’t seem to be any definitive news as I write this on personal terms being thrashed out, or the Silver Supremo summit meeting requested by Anita, where he was looking for reassurances from Pardew about the nature of his role within the squad.

But what is going so right here that didn’t go so right with the Debuchy affair? And what must Debuchy himself, not to mention Yohan Cabaye, and even Danny Simpson think about it?

I must admit that I have written my fair share of criticism about the way Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias have gone about their business in some negotiations, and I still stand by it. However, credit where credit is due, it must be said that £6.7 million plus bonuses seems to be a fair and equitable fee for both sides in this case and they seem to have got their man. However, this isn’t to say that all being well, it shouldn’t be an excellent investment for Newcastle in the long term for a highly talented young player who’s value should appreciate further over time.

Many have thrown around the same tired old logical fallacies in defence of Ashley’s tactics. One of the favourites, of the “either / or” or “false dilemma” variety of logical fallacy seems to be that any deviation from Ashley’s current strategy, including paying £6.3 million for a French international full back, would mean a return to the bad old days when Freddy Shepherd brought in broken old has beens like Alan Shearer (yes, it was Shepherd who brought Shearer to Newcastle for John Hall) for ludicrously inflated fees and wage deals. Of course, this neatly rules out all alternatives which lie somewhere in the middle of these two extremes, rendering the argument as specious guff to those with any kind of capacity for logic. If this deal really does come off, and they manage to come to a deal which is fair and equitable on both sides regarding personal terms and so on, it really would give the lie to such silliness.

Getting to the main point of this piece though as suggested in the title; what must Mathieu Debuchy, along with his friend and ex Lille team mate, Yohan Cabaye, be feeling after the ridiculous saga with our pursuit of the French right back, who was withdrawn from sale by Lille after two derisory bids from Newcastle which fell well short of the £6.3 million required, not to mention alot of mucking around in an attempt to unsettle the player in the hope he would kick up enough of a stink to force through a move to Newcastle. I mention Cabaye as most of you probably know already that he was drawn into the process, making statements to the media such as:

“I told my friend (Mathieu) Debuchy he should come here. He said he would love to come to England and Newcastle. He would like to come here.”

And in a later interview:

“Mathieu has made a very difficult to decision to leave Lille but he has made the decision. Now I hope Newcastle push for Mathieu and I want them to do the deal, I spoke with him two days ago and he told me he wants to come. I hope Derek [Llambias] and Mike Ashley will do the business now.”

It must be somewhat confusing for them. Besides Debuchy, Cabaye himself was begging for his current club to “do the business” and barring some volte-face on both sides, which of course is by no means impossible before the end of the current transfer window, they haven’t, currently leaving Cabaye’s mate with nothing but empty promises. Yet they have for Anita, making the kind of reasonable bid which was never forthcoming in the Debuchy affair. I sincerely hope that it doesn’t have the effect of disillusioning Cabaye, or of further disillusioning Danny Simpson for that matter. Pursuing a forlorn hope that was merely some kind of cheeky punt simply wouldn’t have been worth all that.

Speculating on some of the reasons for the differences between Newcastle being willing to pay a fair price for Anita but not Debuchy, could it be the 23 year Anita’s relative youth? At 27, Debuchy should be at his peak, but on the other hand because of this, he may not offer the same kind of resale potential after several years at the club. However this would not mean that he would not appeal to a bigger club who are pursuing a different policy such as winning trophies through buying players who are at their peak now. If this were the case though, it also begs a question: If Debuchy is too old and too expensive for the club’s current strategy, why didn’t they pursue a younger right back in the first place?

However, this piece isn’t just another Ash bashing exercise from yours truly. As I wrote above, credit where credit is due, even to the slimmer of the year if the Anita deal comes off and if Cabaye isn’t left feeling rather used and disillusioned when all of the transfer window dust has settled.

  1. Lille kept moving the goal posts on price, thats why it hasn’t happened. We offered way over 6m.

  2. Paul – I beleive Newcastle met Lilles valuation then Lille moved the goalposts in valuation

  3. Making a mountain out of a molehill here.

Anita is a midfielder – they generally cost most than defenders. Anita is also at a very good age, debuchy would have a limited time for a decent resale = less value

Ajax by all accounts havent messed us or Anita around, a pretty straight forward if drawn out negotiation.

Lille however have messed debuchy and us around, they originally were after roughly 6m euros….which we eventually offered….then they wanted 8m euros…so if we offer 8m will they they want 10m euro?

we cant deal with a club that acts like that, so either lille grow up and start being professional again or there will be no debuchy deal.

cabaye and debuchy come across as two pretty clever blokes, im sure they understand the situation especially debuchy as he knows how badly lille have treat him

  4. We have offerd what we see as the valuation of Debuchy. If Lille don’t want to accept that, it is entirely upto them, but it is important that we don’t get pushed around by a selling club. Lille have moved the goalposts with regards to their valuation, which again is entirely upto them, but it will simply leave them with an unhappy player on their books.

  5. I have to agree with everything everyone has said.

You would think Lille would have known how Newcastle operate after the other French club Sochaux tried to play clever buggers when we came for Modibo Maiga.

As far as I understand it, we pay 100% upfront and when we make a final offer it is final. We walk away.

I feel sorry for Debuchy as his club has messed him about. Lille now have a disgruntled player.

  6. The best way to gauge it is to see who Debuchy is most unhappy with, and going by his quotes it would seem that Lille are the ones who are getting the vast majority of his anger…. Which speaks volumes to me anyway…

  7. Whoops, that article didn’t go down too well!

However, you’re right in begging the question that if Debuchy’s age is the problem, we should move on. Also agree that it’d be difficult to do the deal without some major loss of face for NUFC or Lille

By the way, is this the Debuchy who wrote Clar de Lune?

  8. “brought in broken old has beens like Alan Shearer”

Are you drunk or only 15 years old?

  9. Debuchy i still think will end up here despite the stupid way lille have handled the affair aint they already bought his replacement says it all

  10. would mean a return to the bad old days when Freddy Shepherd brought in broken old has beens like Alan Shearer?????? Did I just read this??????

  11. Debuchy is great, he loves the tooon. Minimum top 4 this year. Ba to end his drought with a hatrick first game. Tooooooooooooooon!!

  12. I at least , get your use of irony in describing Shearer as a “tired old has been”, but it undoes your efforts to appear “Logical” in that you are seeking to vindicate paying higher fees by appeal to our love for Shearer, — an emotional , NOT a logical ploy in that Shearer was market value , De Buchy is not , at the prices now being quoted. Anita and Cisse have shown that the club will pay market value , but not be ripped off . It is Lille you should be criticising , not NUFC. Your volume of output is testament to your love of the club , but I think everyone understands your not-so-hidden agendas, maybe its time to take on board some of the feedback you get!

  13. Given that Worky doesn’t like any of the club management it won’t be long before he has a go at Kath the tea lady as she is clearly a traitor as she provides a service to the evil Troika of Ashley, Llambias and Pardew.

  14. Wow and there I was thinking it was impossible to fool all of the people all of the time

  15. poor article

debuchy deal was done then the goalposts changed and it was right to walk away, nobody else is snapping him up either

vernon was considered last year long before debuchy

cabaye expressed an oppinion doenst mean he runs things

typical ash bash article moaning on and on and on move on

  16. Agree andymac @19 was thinking of something to say along those lines. I thought it was already made clear that we havn’t offered as much as what these people saying, as the prices they have seen that we offered were in euros not pound sterling.

Hopefully anita deal will be done soon, good bit of buisness that.
Is there a prediction comp this season?

    Whats everyone thinking about sat?
    Anybody going to game?

  17. our midfield is sorted out now the replacements brought in my view are a more defensive type,so goals from them will be very few. Newcastle should still go for debuchy even though his sell on value will be very minimum, they can go down the path of a coloccini give him a contract that will see him out for the rest of his career(performance pending) and everyone is happy.

  18. Who are these people?
Appears avery article these days, a slew of strange names come out of the woodwork, with rabid pro Ashley statements.
In this particular case it seems everyone was in on the negotiations for Debuchy, quoting what we offered and how Lille played a move the goalpost game with each offer.
And perhaps you jumped on Worky too soon, after all he did say he thought the deal for Anita was reasonable and fair.
Not unexpectedly most of the pro Ashley crowd took Workeys “Shearer statemet” seriously, folks it was tongue in cheek, duh!

  19. Daily Mail reporting Vurnon has signed

“Magpies manager Alan Pardew said: ‘We are delighted to secure the services of Vurnon. He is an exceptionally talented footballer with great technical ability, which is exactly what I’m looking at in a player. And, at 23 years old, we hope his best years are at Newcastle.

He has come through the Ajax youth system which is world renowned for bringing up players the right way, and I am sure he will fit seamlessly into the squad of players we have here.

Vurnon has done his pre-season, and indeed already played one competitive game, so he’s up to speed and ready to play when I need him”

First team debut on Saturday then ??????

  20. Andy Mac @19

Erm ! Barnum had a similar statement, “there’s one born every minute”!

  21. KAMAR
Whats your problem? you come on here constantly taking a shot at Workey, hey if you dont agree with what he writes, theres always Ed. or Toonsy’s blogs.
They both write feelgood articles, pro Ashley stuff, should be right down your alley.
I would suggest commenting on the side, you know, tactics, lineups, strategy, after all it is a football oriented blog.
But have the feeling you would be out of your depth there, ah! suppose you should just stick to critcising others, if thats what you enjoy.

  22. I think Kamar can criticise who he wants, within reason. I thought that was the whole point of this blog, to have different points of view. And criticising someone for criticising someone else is the height of hypocricy.

Don’t tell me that was “tongue in cheek” either.

Kamar’s post @6 was commenting on Worky’s article, so he was very much sticking to Newcastle and to the point.

  23. Worky said the other day that there are hundreds/thousands of people reading this blog. I think it is a great thing that some of them “come out of the woodwork” and have their say.

It would get boring listening to the same old, same old every day. And that includes the sh*te that I say :)

The transfer window always seems to be the most polarising time.

  24. Debuchy is twenty seven years old, a player coming into his prime, the current France RB and has been evaluated by his club and other sources at around eight or nine million euros.
NUFC following Cabayes reccomendation (as a foemer team mate)have attempted to sign him, but not at his evaluated price.
Having unsettled Debuchy NUFC have made a number of lowball bids, each rejected by Lille.
They have not moved the goalposts, simply NUFC have not as yet met their evaluation.
Of course the NUFC PR department have gone into overdrive, using their Journo. hacks to print confusing articles, which place’s blame for the entire fiasco on Lille.
Of course most fans were willing to believe what they wanted to hear in the first place, so here we are.
There’s a constant thread running through this story, concerning Debuchy’s age (which by now we all understand the clubs policy of buying younger players for their sell on value)
At twenty seven, the guy is coming into what for most players is an age where they enter their prime.
Could we not like Colo. (who is what? twenty nine)employ a few veteran players (kids win nowt)and forget about sell on fees.
Are we running a football club here or a financial services company ?
It becomes very boring when we end up reading more about the finacial side of the business, rather than enjoying the product it’s self, yes, thats a good game of football.

  25. Chuck says:

“Are we running a football club here or a financial services company ?”

Neither Chuck its a sports marketing operation :)

  26. Chuck, I don’t mean to pick on you, even though we have had our run-ins. But you say:

    “(kids win nowt)”

That is a paraphrase of the famous Alan Hansen quote that he has had to live down for almost 20 years.

  27. And i did mention that Kamar should continue criticising, as his knowledge of football appears to be limited.

  28. Anyway, I am done with my bickering with Chuck. Newcastle are 6/4 to beat Spurs. That seems like a decent bet, them being without Adebeyor and Modric.

They have speed down the flanks which hurt us at White Hart Lane but can we learn from that? And who will score? Adebeyor was on fire at WHL. I would man mark Defoe out of the game and see what else they have.

  29. Actually, I am not done yet, @29. I would leave it but you always want it all your way:

When you construct a sentence as follows:

“Could we not like Colo. (who is what? twenty nine)employ a few veteran players (kids win nowt)and forget about sell on fees.”

it is difficult for the reader to determine when you are making a joke, because in the first set of brackets you are being factual and then switch in the second set of brackets to supposedly being “tongue in cheek”.

Am I supposed to be a mind reader? You will probably get angry now, because I am taking over your one and only job of criticising everyone and everything.

  30. Wasnt just Adebayor GS.remember Saha, that was the best game i’d ever seen him play.i like many thought we were in wiv a chance when he was upfront for spurs that day.
Back on the transfer front tho.really pleased this Anita deal is done n dusted.atleast thats 1 world class player in.just wish we could get this Debuchy deal secured.i have a question for the lille n Debuchy agents who posted at the top ov this article…is there any chance the deal will get done this summer?hope we play Anita in midfield rather than at FB.can see him n Tiote really bossing games in midfield n giving the defence some much needed cover.
    HWTL

  31. Jack72: I have to admit my memories of that day are a bit foggy. I remember everything Spurs did in the first half hour came off, then I got drunk.

I recorded the game and deleted it the next day as if that could erase my (foggy) memories :)

  32. I said this before we signed him Worky, but: Vurnon Anita and his horse walk into a bar, the barman says “why the long faces”.

  33. Alreet Worky: Let me begin by saying I think you are the best writer about NUFC on any Blog and certainly run rings around the Chronicle. I also do not pretend that I would come close to having your insight into all things NUFC, or your writing ability.

BUT, and you knew the but was coming. You might want to let your articles be stand alone pieces sometimes.

We can argue the toss about your previous thoughts in the comments section.

“Paul – I beleive Newcastle met Lilles valuation then Lille moved the goalposts in valuation”

Sorry James, but Newcastle United never met Lille’s valuation for Debuchy, that was just Lee Ryder getting things wrong. He didn’t even get the amount right either, he said that Newcastle United’s bid £6 million when it was actually only €6 million.

    So have I GS.

  36. All the season predictions from the papers, Blogs and websites will be coming out. I would say they will be interesting, but after reading Football365’s I don’t think they will.

Last year, I think 3 out of 6 of their “journalists” had Newcastle relegated.

Aye, but it was actually true, Chuck, it was Freddy Shepherd who brought Shearer to SJP. That’s what convinced John Hall to hand over the club to him. That’s what John Hall said anyway.

  38. I was on “Worldsoccershop.com” looking for me new Newcastle top and they advertised Spurs shirts. They only had 2 at $112 apiece, Modric and Adebeyor :) Seriously.

“Alreet Worky: Let me begin by saying I think you are the best writer about NUFC on any Blog and certainly run rings around the Chronicle. ”

Thanks alot GS, but reading some of the guff written by Lee Ryder in the Chronic, that isn’t exactly difficult.

“BUT, and you knew the but was coming. You might want to let your articles be stand alone pieces sometimes.”

What do you mean, GS? I’m not sure I understood that bit.

  40. Worky @50: some people haven’t read your previous articles and may not get the references. You can see that sometimes in their answers.

  41. i curious as to how you know for a fact ryders figures were wrong? Inside info or speculation? or taking other media articles as gosple while dismissing others?

the consensus across the media was that our latest offer for debuchy would be accepted….then suddenly lille come out and say our offer was nowhere near?

to me that that says it was more that lille changed their valuation rather than ryder getting his euros and pounds mixed up.

especially coupled with the direct quotes from debuchy himself, where he was constantly given different reasons why he couldnt go.

  42. GS says:
    August 16, 2012 at 4:41 pm

“Worky @50: some people haven’t read your previous articles and may not get the references. You can see that sometimes in their answers.”

Well I guess I’ll just have to live with that, GS. You can’t please everybody.

  43. @54 to me sounds like newcastle put a lower bid in then lille expected, why would lille want to disrupt dubuchy? Even more so if it true they’ve signed a replacement.

  44. Worky @55: alreet again. Why don’t you want to make money off your Blog? You spend time and money on it, why should it be a labour of love?

I know you can keep your editorial integrity if you are not paid, but the rest of the world gets paid for what they do. E-Bay turned from a guy selling Pez’s as a hobby into what it is now.

You say you don’t need the money, but who doesn’t need a bit extra to “rest” in their account?

You might have to ban me and Chuck if you get more inclusive, but that is a very small price to pay. And I mean very small in Chuck’s case.

  45. Worky, to answer your question, I would imagine Debuchy was already pissed off that he was not released by Lille and this matter will only make him a little more fed up. As for Cabaye, I would imagine he’s pleased with the signing of Anita and if he is pissed off himself, it is more likely to be with Lille than the NUFC board.

  46. And there’s more…

9.5 million turned down for Jarvis, 13 million turned down for Fletcher, 15 million paid for Allen. What?

    8-9 million for Cisse.

How are we supposed to decide what a player is worth?

Worky and others say we put in derisory offers, but would you prefer we end up with Stuart Downing and Charlie Adam at “market” price? Just stirring the pot.

  47. glentoon says:
    August 16, 2012 at 4:54 pm

“Even more so if it true they’ve signed a replacement.”

They did sign a right back, Djibril Sidibé, but he was a 19 year old youngster signed for around £1.5 million from Troyes AC. It’s a bit like saying that we signed Amalfitano or Bigirimana as replacements for Ben Arfa, Tiote or Cabaye.

  48. Straw women? I put up a straw man argument and I bet most people would accept it. Adam and Downing have nothing to do with Anita and Debuchy.

You know what I am saying and don’t pretend you don’t.

  49. And Worky: even though I understand the meaning of straw men, logical falacies, special pleading, sophistry etc. it is funny to hear it on an NUFC Blog.

Ashley knows his customers. They can be taken in by 50% off sales which has gone on in every Bazaar in history. Look at Amazon now, every book is 40% off. Are they shysters in the Ashley mold?

He also does not exploit his sweat shop employees anymore than Nike or Apple do. Doesn’t make it right, but he is no worse than all you i-phone users.

And you can’t trash Ashley for “cross-selling” his businesses. They all do it. You know Branson might pitch Virgin Money on Virgin Air and it is no different to Ashley with Sports Direct and NUFC. Just because the balance sheets are different doesn’t mean the owner of the companies doesn’t see the big picture and how one benefits the other.

I have said all of this before, so it is nothing new to you.

  50. actually, I don’t understand what “special pleading” is. Some wordsmith used it on here once and I looked it up. I decided it was a bit of a know-it-all w@nk term that I would rather not remember.

  51. jonnyrubber says:

“i curious as to how you know for a fact ryders figures were wrong?”

jonnyrubber, everyone who was in a position to know what the bids actually were and spoke about it said that they were €5 million and €6 million. Ryder was challeged by someone else on the same point and he couldn’t come up with anything to back up his assertion that it was £6 million. I called him on one of his errors some time ago and he didn’t have an answer for me either. He just did deleted all my comments referring to it and banned me from his “Blog on the Tyne” :-)

I traced back many of the UK media stories to the French ones they were directly lifted from, including some from Lille representatives themselves and lo and behold, they were translating the euro figures given in France as pounds sterling figures.

  52. Worky: I haven’t been storing up any bile. It’s bloody raining and I was meant to play golf :)

  53. See Partridge is saying we may sign 1 more?
We should be spending much more money, if they are properly serious about a good stab at the top 4 in the prem, winning the europa lge and good domestic cup runs.

Think Partridge said we would be happy with 8th awesome
If I was a fat billionaire I would really want to push on this season…we are verging on the sublime with a few more quality additions.

  54. 27 years old and 6.3M = too old and too expensive!!!

    Madness.

More sock puppets again, repeating propaganda from AshleyCo’s mouthpieces verbatim.

Several commenters here basically stick their fingers in their ears and yell “la-la-la-la-la” whenver the obvious counterarguments to their points are raised. Is there any press outside of the Chronicle and Journal (Ashley’s Mirror Group mouthpieces) that claim Lille have “moved the goalposts”? Do any of you read any French press at all? And where do you all find this iron rule of “defenders (e.g. Thiago Silva or Rio Ferdinand) cost less than midfielders (we got Cabaye and Tiote for about 9M total)?” I suspect you’re making it up to rationalize your own position and that of your Dear Leader.

FFS, they’re so unsophisticated they don’t pick up irony.

Chuck-don’t you realize all the blame for not getting Debuchy MUST fall on Lille? That it’s not even possible for AshleyCo to be, say, “horrible” in their business dealings?

GS-I was the one who used to term “special pleading.” Given some of the points I’ve seen you put forth, I’m not surprised you don’t understand it.

  55. GS says:
    August 16, 2012 at 6:38 pm

“actually, I don’t understand what “special pleading” is.”

GS, it’s another one of those fallacies I keep gannin’ on about. It’s quite simple, expecting special treatment without good reason.

Say Lindsay Lohan got sentenced to prison over on your side of the pond again, and in her defence, she says that whilst it’s perfectly ok for poor people to be sent to prison, because their lives are miserable anyway, the judge couldn’t possibly send her to prison because her life is very exciting and she would suffer extreme psychological distress through missing out on many glittering social events and so on. That would be a rather crude piece of “special pleading”

Say a white racist said that it’s ok for black people to be unemployed because they are lazy and don’t mind living in poverty anyway, but that it’s wrong for white people to be unemployed because they are more hard working and used to a better standard of living than black people, that would be a rather crude example of racist special pleading, and so on and so on…

But there are far more subtle and insidious examples which are harder to pick up.

  56. “But as I’ve said all along here, Mike Ashley and the board don’t sell cheap, so they would have to come and pay us a hell of a lot of money to take one of our players.”

Bang. Coming from the man who winged less than 24 hours ago about agents and clubs making life difficult signing players.

Oh, and Alan, we need a centre back and a striker. Not just one more.

And please stop thanking Mike Ashley every f’kin time we sign someone. No other manager does that FFS.

Nice to have Anita finally, hopefully he’s played in a position and system which brings out the best in him and others.

  57. Are some of these people for real? If it was possible to write in crayon on here Worky I would seriously consider it.

  58. I have s feeling Debuchy will be the one who for away….but let’s just imagine for a moment he isn’t & our board pull it out the back in the 11th hour. Many fans including myself would feel happy but think about it…that’s without signing a CF or CB! Is it possible Slimfast would do this to manage fans expectations by closing transfer window on a high?

  59. tunyc: why do you remember saying it if you weren’t trying to impress someone by saying it? I don’t remember the last time I said “kitchen” or “plastic”.

  60. Jimbob says:

Bang. Coming from the man who winged less than 24 hours ago about agents and clubs making life difficult signing players.”

    Thanks Jimbob.

GS, that’s another example of “special pleading,” this time from our Silver Supremo. We only sell players for exhorbitant fees, but if we want to buy a player from another club, they must meet our valuation of him because other clubs must “get real,” and “understand that times have changed” to use his words. However, for some reason, Newcastle United are exempted from this idea of getting real because times have changed. It also completely ignores the notion that other clubs may want to hold on to their player, just as Newcastle want to hold on to theirs unless the price is very high.

The thing about fallacies though is that they almost invariably fool the foolish if you repeat them enough. That George W. gadgie you had over there was a master of repeating illogical fallacies over and over again until people of low intelligence accepted them as facts.

“You’re either with us or against us” was a classic fallacy of his.

  61. “I traced back many of the UK media stories to the French ones they were directly lifted from, including some from Lille representatives themselves and lo and behold, they were translating the euro figures given in France as pounds sterling figures.”

then would that not also apply to the rumoured ‘asking price’?

so if only actually bid £4.68m (6m euro) then is it not possible that lilles rumoured valuation of 8m euro could have actually been £8m (10.24m euros)

now if you look at those figures it makes sense for lille to say we were nowhere near their valuation – theres a difference of 4.24m euros (£3.3m)

compared to difference between us offering £4.68m (6m euro) and them wanting 8m euro (£6.25m) – thats only a difference of 2m euro (£1.57m)

so yes euros and pounds get mixed up, however it seems unlikely that both sets of figures have been considering how close our bid would still have been if only it was incorrectly reported

“so if only actually bid £4.68m (6m euro) then is it not possible that lilles rumoured valuation of 8m euro could have actually been £8m (10.24m euros)”

No, johnnyrubber, and it wasn’t a “rumour”. Michel Seydoux categorically stated that it was €8 million euros. They didn’t want to sell him in the first place, but when Ashley parked his tanks on Lille’s lawn and used Cabaye and other ways to turn his head, Lille very graciously agreed to sell for a reasonable fee. However, understandably, they weren’t going to let him go for a pittance just as we wouldn’t let someone Papiss Cisse go for £6 million or whatever. Why do you have a problem with that?

Is it a case of the “special pleading” I mentioned above? ;-)

  63. Tunyc @70 says:

“GS-I was the one who used to term “special pleading.” Given some of the points I’ve seen you put forth, I’m not surprised you don’t understand it.”

So true. I wouldn’t get worked up about anything I say, I might change my mind tomorrow.

The difference with me is that I have strong opinions, some opinions and no opinions on subjects, whereas most on here seem to be stuck with only strong opinions.

  64. ” Lille very graciously agreed to sell for a reasonable fee. However, understandably, they weren’t going to let him go for a pittance just as we wouldn’t let someone Papiss Cisse go for £6 million or whatever. Why do you have a problem with that?”

i have no problem with it at all….

however judging by debuchys comments he thought lille were asking for much more than a pittance, something along the lines of ‘i am only a defender’

so then if your correct and we offered £4.6m (6m euro) and lille wanted £6.2m (8m euro) thats hardly nowhere near is it in fact in transfer terms between top league teams its pretty damn close.

so not only did debuchy voice his concerns over lille valuation of him, but lilles actions also appear to contradict that the difference was in fact only £1.6m

then of course we can add that a lot of the media (not just the uk hacks) expected our last bid to accpeted

then suddenly lille come out and say he is not for sale and our bid was nowhere near?

they were willing to let him go when they got a replacement…..

    then he wasnt for sale

all of this points to the fact that the difference in our offer and their valuation changed.

i dont honestly think we would have wasted most of the summer chasing a player who’s club valued him at far more than we were willing to pay.

“Is it possible Slimfast would do this to manage fans expectations by closing transfer window on a high?”

Mike Ashley’s fortunes changed because of two things, both roughly at the same time.

One was making Chris Hughton manager. Though this was in desperation more than anything else at the time, it turned out to be arguably one of the greatetst moments of good fortune in NUFC’s history. He got us promoted back to the Premiership and very importnatly, rebuilt the club’s scouting operation, replacing Ashley’s three Wise monkeys with his ex Tottenham colleague, Graham Carr. We have all seen the results from that.

The OTHER one was bringing in armies of PR advisors after the relegation fiasco, the trying to sell the club via e.mail fiasco and so on. They have managed the club’s propaganda since, contantly pumping out the fallacies about how any deviation from the Ashley method will result in a return to buying has beens and paying them all £100,000 per week, with the club eventually becoming the next Rangers, Portsmouth or whatever.

PR people go along the same lines as Hitler, Goebbels and others. Make some basic key points and hammer them home over and over again until we simple folk are cowed into submission. Any time Ashley’s methods are questioned it’s the same key points, fallacies which are constantly repeated. “Fat Freddy, has beens on mega wages, Administration, Rangers, Portmouth. Fat Freddy, has beens on mega wages, Administration, Rangers, Portmouth. Fat Freddy, has beens on mega wages, Administration, Rangers, Portmouth. Fat Freddy, has beens on mega wages, Administration, Rangers, Portmouth” ad infintum … Every alternative between these two extreme positions are deliberately erased.

“But the most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly and with unflagging attention. It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over. Here, as so often in this world, persistence is the first and most important requirement for success.” – A.H.

“Are some of these people for real? If it was possible to write in crayon on here Worky I would seriously consider it.”

I don’t know. I think they support NUFC and have something to say. Worky’s article today was a bit confusing for the uninitiated, if he doesn’t mind me saying it.

  67. Worky @83: you also know what you are doing bringing in Hitler and Goebbles to associate with Ashley, and then explain the PR and propaganda connection. Then, repeat, repeat, repeat.

I get the feeling you are a bit of a PR guru yourself.

Actually, no. Though they will seldom admit it for obvious reasons, PR people really do follow Goebbels’ principles. He wrote the book on PR. After all, if you can sell nazism, than you can sell pretty much anything! ;-)

  69. Hey Worky, season starts soon. Magic. I know you like to have a bit back and forth, hope Tunyc isn’t that mad at me, and I don’t care if Chuck is or not.

Sky has cleared, I’m off for a game of golf.

  70. Worky @86: differences and hate have always been easy to sell. Look at the Daily Mail :) Then for a couple of weeks after the Olympics it is all “multiculturism” until they start again.

It’s quite ironic that they have a large Jewish following nowadays.

    ————

because everything indicates that its them playing funny buggers….

then again maybe it be better to try and invent some discord between cabaye, debuchy and ashley? which is pretty much what this article does.

as i said debuchy voiced his concerns over lilles asking price, he also voiced his anger over lille making up different excuses as to why he couldnt leave…..so if you want my opinion as to what debuchy thinks…….he is more likely to be pi$$ed of at lille than ashley – judging by HIS comments. As for Cabaye i suspect he will go along with his mate

i very much doubt that they have both sat down to moan about ashley being a tight @rse, much more likely they had a good moan about Lille messing debuchy around…as debuchy himself has said.

this isnt even about backing ashley or ‘discrediting’ lille….its about discussing an article that tries to sow the seeds unrest with one of our players when there is no evidence of such and to suggest it is speculation in the extreme….something i would expect from the daily mail not a toon blog

  74. Not sure why a right back (Debuchy) would be bothered by a club interested in him purchasing a left back cum defensive midfielder?

Would Debuchy be bothered if Andy Carroll was re-signed?

  75. No tee times, bugger.

Worky: this is your blog and I cannot say anything for you, but, aren’t you pleased that:

    1. there are new people on

    2. that they put up coherent statements (they did Jimbob)

    3. that they seem to care about NUFC

I GOT MY GIANT “TENT TOP” FROM KITBAG, BY THE WAY, WHICH IS ADVERTISED AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BLOG. THEY DIDN’T TELL ME THAT ONLY THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA AND AN XL TOON TOP IS VISIBLE FROM SPACE.

I’ve thought about this and although I originally felt that the new posters who popped up to discredit or rubbish a critical topic were just part of Fatman’s spin team, I’m now not so sure.

Granted there is every possibility that the Deadly Duo do have a propaganda machine all wound up and ready to go, just as Fat Freddie had in the 90’s. However maybe these people who turn up and write comments, as GS says, find your arguments too contentious and feel they have to rise to the bait which is, after all, what a blog should do ?

As for being told by the propaganda machine that the alternative is losing money, paying vast wages to over performing players blah blah blah maybe that’s just the standard cop out used by individuals with little or nothing more to add ?

  81. Das Kapital, is that that book that was written before the micro-chip, the internal combustion and jet engine, nylon, a-bomb, You Tube, flouride tooth paste?

I also tried to read the “Wealth of Nations” but an invisible hand took over :)

  82. Returning to football based topic, has anyone commented on Pardwho’s “We might need one more” bombshell ?

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11678/7996484

So Amalfitano (free), Bigi (1m), and Good (pkt of crisps and a Yorkie Bar) are replacements for

  84. Alreet Andymac: Best – injured, Loven surplus, Smith not wanted, Kadar – never was. Forster, how many gams did he play for us?

  85. GS says:

“Alreet Andymac: Best – injured, Loven surplus, Smith not wanted, Kadar – never was. Forster, how many gams did he play for us?”

Best contributed last season as did Loven albeit not in a big way. Smudger was at MK and FF was at Celtic but we were paying some wages for all of them. Now the wage bill has been reduced we should be using that money to bring in at least two or three quality players – one of whom has arrived today !

No sign of the others then ?

  86. I think we need to increase our TV ratings to compete. We should bring in Shergar, Shane Warne and Gordon Ramsay.

  87. GS says:

“I think we need to increase our TV ratings to compete. We should bring in Shergar, Shane Warne and Gordon Ramsay”

Is that the Viagra kicking in now ? :)

  88. The PR machine sadly seems more focused on convincing existing fans that the current regime are doing a good job against the odds whilst promoting SD rather than attracting new fans. The way we go about business comes across as cheap & tacky sadly – most fans now want to see quality & be associated with class. We will never build the NUFC brand under this lot only the SD one & for those that go on about financial stability we are still in the personal debt of one fat man who has whittle away at our commercial takings to line his own pockets. It’s early days but I am not convinced he will ever have the clubs interests at heart. This blog does well to remind us. We’ve seen too many bridges burnt & I’d be hard pushed to cite a case for a built one…feel free to try.

  89. AndyMac: I have no idea if I am interested. Should I ask her to watch the match at 11.30 here on Saturday?

Putin’s had absolutely loads of ’em at it in the comments section of UK and other newspapers over the Pussy Rioters in jail over the last few days. I do have information about some PR companies using interns to change opinions on companies who have a bad public image and / or doing controversial things, though I have no real evidence on Ashley, yet.

The other thing is that PR companies have lines of communication with hacks like Ryder. They persuade their hacks into putting out the right message and the people digest it and amplify it.

Andy, have you ever read (or seen) “Manufacturing Consent?”

pro ashley or not, pro being tight with the cash or not, we are now even posting about supposed players feelings???

am sure there is a new season less than 48hours away and not a positive word in sight about the players who out done last seasons wildest dreams?

That was Hugh’s thing and he’s working like a bugger ATM on some geeky computer contract, hence his absence from the blog over the last few months. The thing is that I’m working like a bugger too and by the time I cranked out some blogs on here and all the other stuff to keep the place gannin’, I really didn’t get the time to get into it and set it up myself. There’s a bit of a slight learning curve too for me as it isn’t just a question of clicking a few things and setting it off, it takes a bit of time to set it up and keep it going. It’s a bit late to get enough people involved now and so on.

Sorry about that but watch this space, I still might be able to work something out which is similar.

geordiedug, I was actually very positive about Anita’s transfer and I did make a point of writing that the transfer window is still open that the there is still time to rectify the situation, whether it’s with Debuchy or with someone else

No, I don’t mind you saying it at all because it is correct and very natural. As Noam Chomsky might say, when ones viewpoint goes with “received wisdom,” with “convention,” you are merely repeating things which have been said and written many times before and people are familiar with. Through constant repetition, people have come to lazily accept these things as “facts” and beyond question whether they is true or not, explanation is not necessary. People just nod their heads. Simple.

If on the other hand, you are voicing opinions which go against “received wisdom,” true or not, it may seem like it comes from another planet initially, so you have to start from the beginning. You have to try and explain it in a way which you don’t if you are mere repeating the same kind of stuff as everyone else, over and over, because the familiarity is not there.

  101. well maybe it would have been better if you had split the two into separate articles as new signing arrives (positive) and cabaye debucy and simpson must wondering wtf(debate)as i read this article as negative

I’m not having a go at you, like i said i like your work hence i read the blog but there is a 100 or so comments on here kind of saying the same thing?

the facts are we made a bid, not what websites/journos/fans/comentators say but what nufc say to be a fair price and Lille rejected it so the club move on. everything else is subject to rumour. it might still happen it might not (i hope it does)

every signing made since relegation and every bid made for players has been in line with the clubs public policy of getting value for money.

    the wage bill is lower

we will turn a profit begining of the 2013-2014 season

we finished 5th last season and gained automatic qualification to the europa league

the facts above prove something is working and working well.

and also like i said i dont trust ashley as far as i could chuck him but i cant argue with any of the above

geordiedug, most things in life contain a mixture of positives and negatives within the same thing and writing should reflect that. You may still love your wife, even though she nags you and drags you around shopping for daft women’s shoes all day!

The players, and the second scouting network under Graham Carr.

Now to put you on a bad mood again :-)

One thing that I find very ironic about Ashley fans is that many of them who criticise me for criticising some of their actions and deceptions is that they often seem to think it’s perfectly OK to absolute rip some of our players apart, often incorrectly too and from the point of complete ignorance. And yet they often have the gall to tell ME to get behind the f*cking team! Personally, I think this is getting it the wrong way around and I have never criticised the players in the same way as some of them. That’s what getting behind the team is really about, not being obsequious about a fat con man and his loathsome little cipher.

“Do you rate this Anita? Where do you see him playing? Any Possible team news for sat?”

I do rate him highly and his primary position is as a defensive midfielder, though he can be a good left back or right back too, not just left back as some of the rags have been saying.

I’ve watched him in a few Eredivisie games. I originally started watching Ajax again to track Vertonghen as he was the one I really wanted us to sign originally as he is absolutely top notch and well worth what Spurs paid for him. However, I did also take a shine to little Adam Maher and little Anita as well as I watched the big gadgie. Good players.

I’ll have a match preview by Jimbob up tomorrow morning and Andy has done one too (big mix up earlier today).

  106. Not really touching on the article here but this is a decent video for people to take a look at Anita who havent seen him before. Obviously its only youtube so I will reserve judgement until a few games time but can see that he is pacey and is a typically ajax youth type of player. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ec_rs_YbqE

  107. So your not going for a preseason beer with decks and the Fatman then? haha

Football is all about opinions I give you the facts I could think of off hand and progress has been made but only time will tell wether it is for the long term good of the club?

Stop bracketing me as an Ashley fan! We are all stuck with him like it or not I just can’t argue with some of the things you can about his regime.

I really enjoyed last season and choose to go for the positve side of life as delving into the depths of business men like Ashley will not make for pretty reading or confidence building in his treatment of brands!

Your confidence in Anita has perked me up I am also a huge fan of vertonghen. I just hope and pray collo and Taylor stay fit enough to get us off to a decent start

  108. ah it looks like if you disagree with a negative piece about the board or ashley you must be an ASHLEY FAN.

Maybe people should be given some credit for thinking for themselves and assessing each situation as it comes along regardless of their opinion for an individual…
