Newcastle United vs Everton match banter!

Newcastle United v Everton.
Another stiff test for the lads.
Venue: St James’ Park, Newcastle.
Date: Weds 2nd January, 2013.
Kick off: 8.00pm.
Referee: Martin Atkinson (Yorks).
UK TV: Sky Sports.

Hello, good evening and welcome to our “match banter” for this evening’s game against Everton at St James’ Park.

Of course, this will be our first game of 2013, and the last of what has been a very tricky trio of games over the Christmas and New Year holidays, with the Magpies conceeding a whopping eleven goals in the first two. Well here’s hoping that 2013 starts on a better note than 2012 ended!

It will be tough though. Despite a narrow defeat in their last game against Chelsea, Everton’s recent form has been very good, with the record in their last six games (most recent first) being L|W|W|D|W|D, leaving them at sixth in the Premiership table going into this game. On the other hand, our recent record has been L|L|W|L|L|L, though if you only count Premiership games, it has been L|L|W|L|L|W which is slightly more respectable.

Looking back at our last game against the Toffees, we were very lucky to get a 2-2 draw against these tricky customers, with a perfectly good goal which crossed the line being ruled out for them in what was an excellent game with some very poor refereeing.

If we can get our form back though, it could be a very tight game. Everton should be our closest rivals in the Premiership as a kind of “best of the rest” club behind the top six moneybags sides, slugging it out for one of the last Europa League places. Here’s hoping it returns this evening in a great game – Of course, with the lads coming out with the spoils in the end!

Team news.

As I haven’t been doing the usual match previews over the Christmas holiday period, I shall include a bit of team news here before the teamsheets come out.

Newcastle United.

I’m sure that most of know that it would be an understatement to say that Newcastle United are having more than their fair share of injury problems at the moment, and for this evening’s game, Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic, Jonas Gutierrez (all knee), Steven Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa (both hamstring) Yohan Cabaye (groin), and finally Danny Simpson (broken toe) will all be out, though Cabaye and Taylor have at least returned to training. Vurnon Anita will be a doubtful with his ankle.

On the good news front though, Mike Williamson will return after after being suspended for the Arsenal game, while Shola Ameobi will not be on his way to the Cup of African Nations to play for Nigeria after all. Cheick Tiote WILL be going to join the Ivory Coast squad, though he will also be available for this game before travelling to join his Ivorian team mates.

However, going back to the bad news, sadly, the big news is undoubtedly that Demba Ba will not be starting this evening, not through injury but to hold talks over a potential move to Chelsea. Of course, it goes without saying that losing the man who has scored exactly 50% of all of our Premiership goals this season could be catastophic with the club in it’s current situation.

Everton.

Darron Gibson (thigh), Kevin Mirallas and Seamus Coleman (both hamstring), Tony Hibbert (calf) are all out but Captain, Phil Neville (knee) is only a doubtful. Finally, on the other side, Marouane Fellaini will return from a three match ban picked up for behaving like a nutter for practically the whole of Everton’s game against Stoke back on December 15th.

On that, I will leave you with the usual reminders that I shall be updating this post with the official team sheets when they become available, and posting some online links for the game when they are available too, though this game will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports. Finally, I will also be posting highlights when the game is over, as well as a video of the whole match if there is one available.

Howay the Lads!

Team sheets.

Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul (G), James Perch, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (C), Davide Santon, Cheick Tiote, Vurnon Anita, Papiss Cisse, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Shola Ameobi.

Subs: Rob Elliot (G), James Tavernier, Shane Ferguson, Gael Bigirimana, Mehdi Abeid, Sammy Ameobi, Nile Ranger.

  1. cisse will go straight to centre forward and will start banging the goals in i still think he is better than ba in that position. At least it is going to be sorted out early if he passes the medical so we can get another body through the door.

  2. need another striker if ba goes before saturday if possible should of had a couple of players having a medical bye now come on ashley get a few players in and lets kick start our season

  3. Re the WH player from previous blog, it was Modiba Miaga that was mentioned. Probably just and rumour however.

We really really need a win tonight.

  4. The “Bloodzeed” link on Wiziwig will almost certainly be the best, it always is when it’s on. You’ll need Sopcast though so I’ve put in a link to download the Sopcast player if you want to give it a go.

Bloodzeed is as good as the telly if you have a decent BB connection.

“Re the WH player from previous blog, it was Modiba Miaga that was mentioned. Probably just and rumour however.”

I wasn’t that impressed when I looked at him Grumpy.

  6. I was pondering on which players I would swap from Everton and totted up six of them.

Ranger on the bench tonight, about time for him to earn his corn.

  7. Worky as I said I didn’t know much about him so couldn’t give an opinion. Suppose it would be another in the squad though!

“Worky as I said I didn’t know much about him so couldn’t give an opinion. Suppose it would be another in the squad though!”

Grumpy, it was him v Cisse at the time and there was no comparison.

  9. Though we will no doubt miss Ba, there’s one consolation in the fact Shola has proven to be able enough playing the second striker role, with an ability to hold up the ball and surprisingly laying on some good passes.
Hopefully Marveaux can show us his creative abilities and both Anita and Tiote give a good defensive performance.
Though Cisse has not exactly broken any scoring records, this will be an opportunity for him to shine, without the distraction of Ba, constantly in front of him.
Looking at the bench we are getting close to the bottom of the barrel, though it might be neccessary to replace Shola later in the game.

  10. The average age of the outfielders on that bench must be about 20. Not a lot of experience. What was Pardew saying after Bordeaux about our youngsters being shyte and sending them out on loan?

Sorry to be downbeat. The first 11 looks OK.

  11. Pardew said Ba is off in his pre-match interview.

    99% confirmed then.

Cisse also only starting on the right due to the team training 4-3-3 with Ba upfront and Cisse at right all week.

“Shola is playing on his own up front though?”

Phisix, I’m not entirely sure but the way the team sheet is set up above (from the club site) it seems to look that way.

  13. Back to where we started, kind of like with our squad being back to where it was in January, 2011.

    Stats indicate they’ve dominated.

  14. Hope dwindling, for this match and the season.

Being taunted by LFC-supporting coworkers and why not?

I honestly wonder what Debuchy’s thinking right now.

  15. Three points off the drop.

17th-placed side has a game in hand.

17 matches to pick up 19 points-IF we get a draw tonight.

Somebody tell me there’s a bright side, somewhere.

    “Stats indicate they’ve dominated.”

The bits of the game I’ve seen indicate they’ve dominated tunyc, though there seems to be some kind of great conspiracy to stop me seeing much of it. I’ve had people at the door. ‘phone calls and all sorts of distractions. Bastads!

“Somebody tell me there’s a bright side, somewhere.”

If one of the big lads can get on the end of another long punt from Krul we’re back in the lead.

  18. Another fast and furious game. Watching on good wiziwig stream in dutch – socsportlive. We have Mackems live here 3-0 down now.

  19. watching the match on a big screen in hd both sides have looked good in spells we are not that far off the game it was never a free kick but once it was given what a strike by baines (cant see him being with the toffees much longer) the. shola incident was definitely not a penalty

  20. “baines (cant see him being with the toffees much longer)”

Understandable thought from a shell-shocked tune supporter!

  21. GS-I can’t even enjoy that schadenfreude. LFC’s revival turns my stomach if I’m honest.

  22. At least QPR, Reading, Villa, Southampton and Wigan are worse. Finish around 16th this season probably.

  23. How many games do we have to lose to realise we need a massive shake up. Oh yeah not until it’s too late. Get the P45’s out somebody.

  24. Jimbob @ 62

“At least QPR, Reading, Villa, Southampton and Wigan are worse. Finish around 16th this season probably.”

Oft-repeated, and fallacious logic. You’re only as good as how you’re playing. What will this be, 2 wins in 15? That’s relegation form.

  25. Not even funny anymore. We’re only heading in one direction and it ain’t up. The players can’t be arsed, they are not playing for the manager and once that happens you can only do one thing. What needs to happen to freshen the place up won’t happen though. Very sad state of affairs.

  26. phisix @ 82 – this is for general consumption but it tentatively answers your question:

I don’t see, with this set-up, how we are going to avoid relegation.

If Debuchy comes I suspect Lille’s financial problems are in fact dire and they’re on the verge of not paying wages.

  27. Jimbob says:
    January 2, 2013 at 9:28 pm

“Hughton would have been sacked by now Worky.”

Of course he would Jimbob, he was sacked when we were 11th for a poor run of five games (with two draws). Though of course, that was almost certainly not the real reason.

  28. 5 mins to go. We need this draw.

Oh look, 85 minutes sub, and for Perch not Shola.

    Any Pards lovers still?

  29. I have trouble seeing it that way, sammy. Nobody was looking to give back any of the luck we enjoyed in the first half of last season. Also, if we were lucky what would we get? A draw when we need a win-IF we don’t conceded again?

    Pretty down right now.

  30. Oh, well-Ranger on now.

    All is well.

So what’s it going to take for this asshat to get his marching orders?

  31. tunyc says:

“If Debuchy comes I suspect Lille’s financial problems are in fact dire and they’re on the verge of not paying wages.”

Big new SJP sized stadium complex to pay for tunyc.

  32. I swear, sometimes its like our players lack basic footballing intelligence – don’t pass the ball, try to dribble through everyone… Kick it long but with no accuracy… Brutal.

  33. How sad. Stoppage time at home and we can’t even get the ball off them. No belief or spirit. Just like Pardew managed at Southampton.

  34. Sammy Ameobi is useless. Decent with his feet, I’ll give you that, beat a few players, but can’t pass for sh!t and is possibly even lazier than his brother

  35. wt @ 99: so to add insult to injury, AshleyCo. will get lauded by certain pundits for “winning” out in their negotiation with Lille…when in reality, the latter just ran out of money. Again, frankly, we could be getting anyone to come in and I wouldn’t be that perky about it. As Jeff Fischer said about my NFL St. Louis Rams at the draft last season, this team “has a lot of needs.”

  36. The smell of rotten flesh is rank, and the players seem to lack drive or any idea , the manager has no tactical awareness, when 2-1 down at home what is your B plan alan ? Not a clue , bring on more players but sammy amoebe thinks he can win a game from 35 yards when we have players in the middle, passing was terrible and tiote’s tackles are a liability giving free kicks away in the wrong areas, altogether dissaray.

Not looking forward to next 3 months …ugh

  37. I have never posted before, but then again I have never been so dispondent, It seems that NUFC have a great first team, but as soon as it is disrupted then we have nothing to back it up. Who is responsible?

  38. Jimbob says:
    January 2, 2013 at 9:56 pm

“Awful. This is the relegation season all over again.”

It reminds me more of Pardew’s death spiral at West Ham Jimbob, before Curbishley rode in on his white charger.

  39. I’ve not said this directly but I will now…

Pardew has to go. That’s it I’m afraid. It will only be a short term fix as Mike and Derek will remain and they’re the real problem but our form is shocking. The players look lost and Pardew cannot even motivate a team to come from a goal down. Put him in a relegation fight and we’ll only head one way.

Things have to change now before it’s too late.

  40. Also, down 2-1, immediately drops back to 4-4-2, and takes off Gabby who was having some join down the flank to bring on a central defensive midfielder? That seems somewhat counterintuitive…

    Negative tactics at home

  41. We put in in good effort but lost again.

Can any manager survive this sequence of results, starting today and going backwards (which is fitting because that is what we have done this year)?

    L-L-L-W-L-L-W-L-L-L-L

That’s 9 losses in the last 11 premier league games. That is Mick McMackem territory when he was at the Mackems.

  42. KT says:
    January 2, 2013 at 10:00 pm

    “Who is responsible?”

People don’t learn that shit managers can have one good season KT, and even win “Manager of the Year” too sometimes. It’s happened many times in the past.

  43. cmon lads its not that bad if we win the rest of our games this season we might finish in the top six again!

  44. KT, having written that above, it’s the fault of Llambias and Ashley entirely. Ashley has the hubris of the billionaire who makes a fortune in one field, then thinks he can do everything.

  45. Worky, you know what boils my piss is reading comments on Ed’s blaming Demba Ba. It just boggles my mind it really does.

I don’t blame him. If it wasn’t for him we’d be bottom of the league right now. Good luck to him. He’s never going to win anything here is he? And don’t anyone give me that shite of ‘playing for the Toon is an honour blah blah balh’ If you got offered double your wages you’d feck off too.

Shame he’ll end up getting booed when he shouldn’t in my opinion.

  46. Jimbob-you’re right, it can only be a short term fix. The history of AshleyCo. will keep anyone decent from coming and we wouldn’t pay anyway. At this point though, I think somebody not connected with the current set up MIGHT actually be able to motivate the squad. I would honestly gladly take the likes of Hughes or Di Matteo. Or even further down the list. Is Kinnear available?

Since last May: 5-6-13, 21 of 72 points.

  47. GS, Maybe Fergy could survive that sequence but that’s it. I think even Arsene would get the bullet. As for an average manager with that record you’d expect them to get the chop.

  48. Tunyc, I would take Di Matteo, even Kinnear because he can motivate a team. I wouldn’t have Hughes though.

We need to go continental for a coach. A team full of foreign internationals being managed by a 52 year old Englishman who’s achieved nothing in his career is always destined for failure in the long term.

  49. Jimbob says:
    January 2, 2013 at 10:13 pm

“even Kinnear because he can motivate a team.”

He does actually know how to play proper football too, the pass and move style he learned under Nicholson at Spurs.

And he has a hairstyle like “Billy the Fish” too, which I always liked.

  50. I said at the of last season, that entry into Europe was too early. We needed to ‘build’ our team, support staff, management structures, financial basis, management and executive board with a great plan, project management and process in place. But what have the owners got into, some fly by ‘ the seats of your pans’ scheme – so disappointed. I am normally positive about NUFC, but I’m really struggling with our ability to stay up this season, Please prove me wrong!

  52. KT, don’t shoot the messenger as I’ve alredy been shot for saying this hundreds of times, but this was always going to happen after they sacked Hughton and replaced him with Pardew. I don’t care about that one good season, it meant F all.

  53. I never understood the sacking of Chris Houghton and the appointment of Alan Pardew. But the I’m not I possession of all of the facts, I’m off to sleep off this nightmare, nite nite.

  54. Maybe if Pardew was a proper manager we would not be this way. He has no tactics and does not know where to put his players.

Two DMF when we are losing? Shola on up front on his own and for 90 minutes and Cisse playing RW/defender. Plus taking off Obertan and whacking on more forwards.

What was his losing speech today?

  55. When do you think they’ll be like enough is enough Worky? This has to be it for him now. We’ll lose to Brighton probably on purpose and can’t see us winning at Norwich.

  56. I have saved some money this year by not travelling over from Northern Ireland to watch this crap. Just feel sorry for all the great to on fans in my beloved Newcastle. Away to drink a bottle of red wine now.

  57. I apologise for the cliché but it is a results business. And if Pardew wants to take the plaudits when we win 7 of 10 and tell Moyes we are in a different league, then he should accept the blame now. I remember Everton had a pretty good end to last season as well.

I think today’s result may have even put a smile on the notoriously sour puss of Moyes.

Hughton’s having a bit of a poor run after a good one ATM Jimbob, though he has had a bit of bad luck with refs too. We might have a chance. Anything can happen in the Cup.

  59. Hey Worky, I am sure there is no joy in you being right about Pardew as it means so much wasted talent, some appalling displays of football and relegation form.

  60. I play golf with an ex gulls striker and I won’t even take a bet with him. How sad is that

“Hey Worky, I am sure there is no joy in you being right about Pardew as it means so much wasted talent, some appalling displays of football and relegation form.”

GS, as a Newcastle United fan, the last two years have been hell for me waiting for the inevitable.

  62. Jimbob says:
    January 2, 2013 at 10:38 pm

“Ha not what I asked though Worky :-) When will Pardew get his DCM? (Don’t Come Monday).”

Well I definitely think that all that 8 years… new way to run a club… sticking by Alan through thick and thin blah blah blah, stabilty blah blah was tosh, and I bet you do too? Thing is though and we’ve said this before but who’s next?

  63. @132 that is a really REALLY bad thought! it is true we will survive this season about 13th, 14th but then we will lose our top players in the summer and next season will be the end

  64. No I don’t buy any of it Worky. Like I said before we’re damned if we do, damned if we don’t. But we have to do something now.

  65. evening people and a happy new year!

just back from sjp and still collecting my thoughts. need to see the highlights first before i lay into pardew.

audible and sustained boos at the final whistle tonight. not from me, i don’t see the point personally but it suggests a change in mood amongst the supporters.

there was also a definite murmur of disapproval at the obertan substitution. i’m not surprised, seemed ridiculous to me.

i think the real difference tonight wasn’t on the pitch, although i though everton deserved their win. it was the managers. moyes made a tactical switch which returned a goal almost immediately. pardew’s response was predictably ineffective.

i heard his post-match crap while driving home and he again said “one, maybe two new faces”. we need 4 or 5 players and there is no chance of getting them.

  66. Soh ! everyone got it off their chests, their unhappiness with the clubs performance ?
    Soh! , who’s to blame then ?
    Pardew ?
    Ashley ?
    Forget Llambias, he does’nt count.
I would say Ashley, why ?
He’s in control and makes all of the decisions.
    About what you say?
    Everything!
Dont believe it? ask either Llambias or Pardew, or for that matter anyone on the inside of NUFC.
It’s apparent his ego is so big it almost matches his ignorance about football.
A typical example of a successful retailer, who thinks he can be just as successful in a business he knows next to nothing about.
No more that is than anyone reading this rant.
And probably still does, thats the tradgedy of the whole thing.
I know i repeat myself, at least there’s consitency there, but i have claimed Ashley is the problem from day one.
We could go over the various events that prove how he constantly makes both wrong assumptions and decisions and yet never seems to (not unlike Pardew) accept responsibility.
The obvious problem, so obvious in fact, with this club, is the lack of anyone who knows anything about the game.
I’m sure there are people both on the board and probably some of the coaches, who see whats going on, but have a job to protect.
We all know how that goes (except maybe Dick)
And until the penny drops with Ashley, nothing will change.
Do the players bear any responsibility, sure, but they are in the same situation as those who see a screwed up situation and say nothing.
Everything is done on the cheap here, cheap manager, cheap wages, lowball bids on players, hey cheap prices get cheap products, just like when you but from “Sports Direct”
But whats seriously required are a GM and manager, who have track records.
Give them the responsibility of building a side that is competitive and plays a modern version of the game.
Then go out and sell the brand, a brand based on a side that plays both entertaining plus winning football.
Sure it will take money, but better to spend now and reap the rewards later, than do what our owner did during the summer.
Refusing to spend hoping we would repeat the previous season, rather than realise we would both have injuries to an already small squad, plus a much heavier schedule.
Hey this is not rocket science, every dog in the street was aware of that, my point with Ashley.
Until we dump Pardew and Llambias, then bring in people who at least have some knowlrdge of the game, nothing will change.
Lke i mentioned before, Ashley has been stumbling around for five years now, going nowhere.
Perhaps he should take a leaf outta the Fenway Groups book, who figured it out in one season and dumped both Comoli and Dalglish and with Rodgers are shaping up to be a force in the EPL once more.
Like i say, it’s a slow learning curve.
