Newcastle United v Metalist Kharkiv.
“♫ Metal is tough, metal will sheen ♫”
Venue: St James’ Park, Newcastle.
Date: Thurs 14th February, 2013.
Kick off: 8.05pm.
Referee: Harald Hagen (Norway).
UK TV: ESPN.

Hello, good evening and welcome to our “match banter” feature for this evening’s Europa League game against Ukraine’s Metalist Karkiv.

As you may know already Metalist are a pretty strong team who are genarally regarded as the being the “best of the rest” behind the two Ukrainian giants, Dynamo Kyiv and Shaktar Donetsk. Hence, they won’t be any pushover. One piece of good news for the Toon however is that Metalist have recently sold their own Brazilian Benny, Taison (an excellent driblling winger / forward), to their rivals at Donetsk. Chelsea made a move for him priginally, however the club was then taken over by someone who disliked Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich so much, he preferred to sell him to one of his biggest rivals instead!

But moving on to our lot, Alan Pardew has given some strong indications that he will be fielding a strong side for this evening’s encounter now he has aquired his latest batch of French fancies to boost the squad. It won’t be long now so we’ll soon see! As usual, I will be posting the team sheets for the game when they are made available.

So that only leaves it for me to issue my usual reminder that though the game will be broadcast live on ESPN, I will also be posting some online links for the game, as well as posting highlights and hopefully a video of the whole game for those of you who can’t catch it live, or who may wish to watch it again.

Howay the Lads!

  1. hwtl..got to juggle footie with valentines meal tonight somethings going to get burned, hope its not the toon.

  2. Decent looking team for us and a decent looking bench as well.

I see Willian is on the bench for them, thought he would be a starter. Not familiar with a lot of their team but I would think they are good players.

Hope we are not passed of the park again and not too much long balls.

  3. <<<<<<< would like at least a 2 goal lead for the 2nd leg nar these ganna be tough though 3 goals in 6 champions league matchs tells ya that

    “Any decent links?”

I’ve posted some links above at comment 4 Julio. I’m just hunting down another one to add to it as well. There should be a decent one in there somewhere. try the list of streams on “wiziwig” first.

Have you ‘phoned Domino’s yet then sammy? :-)

  6. We might see if all of those people who voted for Mbiwa have got it right. I see Goufran has garnered a lot of votes since Worky (and I) pushed his name forward.

  7. I like the team, I am a bit suprised that gabby has got the nod over marvs but I still think that given time gabby can still be a big big player, if he can learn the final ball thing then he has already got the rest.

“We might see if all of those people who voted for Mbiwa have got it right.”

He’s a good player Grumpy. I think that being in the centre is his most usual position, though he is versatile and can play on the right too.

  9. just finished my bait in time there..HWTL..
agree wiv the Marv ower Heedless chicken Obertan..but thats pards for ya!! TTBWA

  10. Cisse still has not learnt the offside rule.

Indeed Worky, they could really beat us if we switch off.

  11. Where the F do they get these ‘referees assistants’ from?

That bloke’s gonna be a tw*t. We’ll have to walk the ball into the back of the net, or get nothing.

“Cisse had a stay of execution, but im sharpening my axe again..”

It was a perfectly good goal sampdiago. You should be sharpening your axe for that friggin’ linesman!

  13. When is the last time Cisse score from a one on one?

Cabaye and Tiote need to learn how to tackle.

    ‘goal’.

I thought I’d missed something for a second there Jimbob. Then I realised it’s half time and you can’t score at half time.

  15. Would feel mugged so far paying £15 to watch this shit.
Pardew will have them storming out the blocks for sure

  16. liking the look ov Mbiwa even tho he’s at RB..good composure on the ball, good passing, just the type ov player we needed.

Depends in what sense. Might be the only option for some watching tonight.

“Would feel mugged so far paying £15 to watch this shit.”

It isn’t really a bad game SJT, though slightly frustrating perhaps as thay’re quite good and neither team can seem to finish themselves off. When we did, it was wrongly disallowed.

  19. I like how are corners are getting better. We really need to score at least 2 tonight otherwise we’re out. Can’t see us playing a decent team next Thursday.

  20. To be fair when cisse makes as much effort as cabaye(scoring return from injury, scored in his 2nd game back)who will not pull out of a challenge and his recent bookings show he isnt messing about, then I will cheer him and chant his name,he is now playing in a revitalized team, but he is still sleeping.

“What is that crest? It is even more stupid than the seahorse.”

It’s a Cornucopia (horn of plenty) with the staff of Hermes in front of it GS.

  22. Again,to be fair I cannot say guti or santon or Gabi have put in a decent cross, bar Benny from the wing,I dont know where our supply of crosses come from.

  23. Anita unused once again and Haidara not even used, but once again Guti plays the whole 90 mins. Pards is a joke.

  24. fkin robbed there.officals just cost me anall..i should ov been gan to collect my winnings from the bookies in the morning!!!
UEFA want to be checking the officals bank balance after that preformance.
i dont think we played that badley at all.Metalist r no mugs, thats for sure.
well whats peoples 1st impressions on Mbiwa? imo he looks a very very good player..hope them cnuts in red havnt cost us a place in the last 16 tho..

    Correct.

Aye Jack, he is a good player.

  26. worky there were a few good performances out there all in all we plaed way better than them but reading some of the comments tonight you would think we had lost at home to ashington

  27. A game played at what appeared to be slightly above slow motion.
With Metalist getting what they were looking for,a draw.
Again both Jonas and Cisse, had poor games, actually no one had an outstanding game.
I dont know what Cisse’s problem is and do realise both disallowed goals were close, but we obviously cant rely on only he scoring.
The good news is we for the most part kept possession and kept the ball on the ground, with the glimmer of some kind of organization and plan, in bringing it out of the backfield.
But we should have come out of to-nights game with a win.
Now that we have pace in the side, i cant think of why it’s not put to use, Cisse , Sissoko, Obertan, Marveaux,
We should be using width to create openings where they can run the channels, to open defences.
The game was there for the taking, but they lulled us to sleep and stole a draw.
    Ah well.

  28. toonarmyelite dont bother trying to reason with mentalists, in my book if someone scores two perfectly good goals and the linesman has a nightmare (to be fair i thought the first was a mile off side till i saw the replay)then they have been unlucky but apparantley they are shit for not being slower and being more obviously onside.

“i wish we had shearer back”

You mean get a mad scientist in to invent a time travel machine that would make him 23 again terry?

Or did you mean as a manager? :-)

  30. toonarmytite sez
what more do i want Cisse to do ?
    Stay onside !
and these were not just issolated incidents, he has had a lot of offside calls lately.
As has the forwards in general.
Some may argue, he was onside, but having reviewed both incidents, have to give the linesman credit, but yes they were close.

  31. On the other hand, we simply blew it and now have to go to try and get at lest a one goal draw, which i believe we can do.
But not if he keeps playing Jonas, would rather have young Ferguson, with Marveaux on the right.
As both Obertan and Jonas’ attempts at either crossing or shooting is just awful to watch.
And looks like our set piece strategy has’nt improved any.
But one positive, we carry the ball out keep it on the ground and seemed to have a strategy, which should be to give it to Cabaye, who can then hit those with a bit of pace running the channels.
But then what do i know ?

  32. Pardew tells cisse put fire in your belly… !
Does that mean he’s gonna treat him to a biryani ?

  33. @ chuck peeps like you chuck should have to be veted before being allowed an internet connection.ya also need to get to specsavers might see the linesman there

  34. Toonarmylite
Give it a rest Pendejo !

Still photos prove nothing, was that before he received the ball, did he take a touch prior to passing.
One has to watch the moving action to prove anything.

  35. Looks like he was onside by about 1m on the first goal. Horrible decision by the linesman there. in his defence, the human brain isn’t designed to make these sorts of decisions. The rule is fundamentally flawed b/c people will make a hash of it 24% of the time (for reference, read the book “Brain Bugs”).

The photo worky posted shows that Cisse was clearly onside and by quite a bit. But it’s in the past now and there’s nowt we can do about it.
