A stiff test for Carver this evening.

Time: 7:45pm.
Venue: St James’ Park.
Referee: Lee Mason.
UK TV: None.

Hello, good evening and welcome to our match banter for this evening’s game aginst Everton.

Once again, miscreant manager Alan Pardew will be restrained in his Benton office, leaving assistant John Carver to handle things in the dugout once again. This time though, it will be against a tricky Toffees side who have won their last three Premier League games.

As you can see, in terms of recent form in the Premier League this evening’s two protagonists coudn’t e any closer with three wins, three losses and 9 points out of 18. Could it be a tight contest this evening?

Alan Pardew: “Teams normally hit 40 points and switch off but we haven’t done that,” he said. “We want to do our best for the best fans in the country.”

Roberto Martinez: Speaking on Pardew’s stadium ban, the little Spaniard had the following to say, “It must be difficult. I cannot even think how you can cope with that frustration of not being able to help the team and trying to read the game from the sideline,”

  4. It’s so obvious Newcastle are reluctant to compete for a Shit European league spot, that it was the first words out of the commentators mouth.

  7. That’s why I have ranted about why they send Williamson forward for set pieces rather than keep his slow ass back in defense as he hasn’t come close to scoring with his head since he’s been here.
    Don’t the coaches realize that by now FFS.

  12. Point of interest Iron Mike Williamson, last goal was scored while playing for Watford in 2009, almost five years ago, in which case why is he a fixture in the opposition box during set pieces ?
    I would think that question should be posed to both Pardew and Workey, one being responsible, the other
    having blind faith that it will happen some day.

    Oop’s another one for Lukaku, and give you a guess who was covering him ?

  15. That defeat was in the post to be honest.
    The way we have played in the last few games gave an indicator of how we would fair when stepped up in class.
    Everton were just too good for us all over the park where it counted.
    Although we had our fair share of the ball, We just didn’t do anything with it.
    We continually put crosses into the box that go the the keeper, Or are just easily headed away by the defence.
    Our football is static and we spend our time playing in front of the opposition.

  16. Good game to watch with Newcastle playing well at times and Everton playing a counter attacking game, with each of their goals coming on the counter.

    Sissoko, Gouffran, Ben Arfa, Tiote, and Colo all playing well.

    Can anyone explain why Ben Arfa and Marveaux have been sitting on the bench ?

    Anita, though not a bad player, just can’t fill Cabaye’s shoes, leaving the side without a playmaker, plus Dummett is not the answer when it comes to set pieces.

    We also missed both regular FB’s who normally carry the ball up, leaving both Sissiko and Gouffran exhausted with all the running they had to do.

    Again, Williamson, played a major role in two or possibly all three goals and was left standing on as both Lukaku and Deluefeo went by him as if he were rooted to the pitch.

    Yanga M’Biwa has not had a decent game, for a while now plus I would prefer to see Haidarra in he LB role.

    Again not a lot of support for Cisse and though an improvement on his prior starts, DeJong has to show more if he wants to stay.

    There is a lot of promise in the side, but far from a top four or even six, the only answer being in Ashleys hands during the upcoming window, where there has been talk of a big turnover, where hopefully we hang onto both HBA and Marveaux.

    But when one looks at the goals against numbers, it certainly reflects we need help in central defense badly, having only an ageing Colo. worth his wages.

  17. That happens whenever we chase a game. Our defense looked slow and terrible tonight, it wasn’t just Williamson it was all of them.

    It is difficult to gauge how good Everton are because we have capitulated to Sunderland and Spurs as well. I think they are a decent team but they might suffer next year when they have to send their loanees back.

  18. Forget about the defence, we had a dysfunctional attack with no pace or creativity until Ben Arfa came on when it was too late. Cisse was getting no help and De Jong was shit again. Carver and Pardew are just cowards who thought they were playing it safe and hoping for a 0-0.

  20. Worky, The most frustrating thing about it is possession wise we were well in that game.
    The continuing problem is the clueless nature of the management.
    We start a game with an attacking force with about 3 goals between them, And it showed.
    Much better work rate from Cisse over the last couple of games, But we need goals.

    De Jong is another short sighted attempt at appeasement to the fans in the wake of the Cabaye sale.
    Another player who comes in with an angle attached to him, Which mostly happens with an Ashley Deal.
    Another waif and stray who nobody wants who is living on past reputation.
    It seems to be the mantra that runs through the whole club, And from the owner down to the manager, Coaching staff and players, They are a bunch of laurel resting merchants!
    They try to trade on little tit bits of glory and blag and bluff their way through the rest with propaganda and spin!

  21. Acoording to Transfermarkt, Everton have around £47 million’s worth of players on loan. That’s almost a third the estimated value of their whole squad.

  22. Wilf Bony could be available again at the end of the season.

    Even though he’s scored 21 goals so far and was described as “unplayable” after scoring against Arsenal yesterday evening, Swansea’s record in their 10 games under Garry Monk is P10, W1, D4, L5 despite ‘Daddy Kool’ scoring for them in most games.

    Cisse and De Jong haven’t scored many goals yet I saw it as a problem of creativity, in making chances. Instead of having Ben Arfa playing in a creative role behind Cisse, or at his side for most of the game we had another striker who can’t even score and Sissoko and Gouffran playing out of position again.

  24. Worky, There is a lack of creativity but there are plenty balls going into the box without anyone attacking them.
    I think at one stage we had 14 shots at goal albeit probably long range efforts and half chances.

    Ben Arfa should have at least came on for the full second half, But as usual it was too late and game over by the time they got around to the switch.
    I would put Sissoko in centre midfield and try someone else wide.
    Gouffran should be now tried as a through the middle striker, Because he has played there before.
    De Jong and Cisse look like they will never score and even when we do get the ball to them, They go on to fluff the chance.
    Marveux should be given more game time playing on the wing because he is another who can make things happen, If they would just give him a run.
    Haidaras looks the best option at fullback than Kirk from Corra atm.

  25. Not many sides can handle HBA, when given a free roaming role, he’s our only creative forward, who when not providing the perfect passes, can score himself, a game changer.

    Sure he looks a bit overweight and has done for some time
    (why is that coaches) but players need game time to keep in shape.

    There was some good interaction, between Gouffran, Sissoko, HBA and Cisse.

    DeJong had his moments and considering he’s in a new league , with a new side, I would be willing to give the guy a chance, before outright condemning him at so early a stage.

    Though without Remy we looked toothless.

    And with both Debuchy and Santon missing, we lacked their attacking contributions and in turn put a tremendous load on Gouffran and Sissoko, who ran their asses off, dropping back to cover and having to carry the ball forward.

    I’ve just about had it with Williamson, the guy is forever out of position, slow as molasses and has no clue what to do with the ball when in possession, settling for a hoof out of play or simply anywhere upfield and if you watch him, you see no one gives him the ball when bringing it forward, I wonder why ?

    And not having scored a goal (unless you count own goals) since his time at Watford almost five years ago, why is he pushed forward into the oppositions box, where he still was, when the first goal was scored, FFS leave him back where he belongs.

    He was also responsible for the second and third goals.

    Yet their are actually some who believe he does a great job, he should be back in the lower league’s, where he belongs.

    But that’s anther story, and Joe Hawkins is right, it’s all about the coaching or lack of it.

    We need help as far as replacing Cabaye is concerned, Anita not a bad little player, who also has his moments
    but simply is no where near being Cabaye’s replacement.

    Perhaps it’s time to give Bigirimana a shot, what the hell, we are relatively safe, lets give some players an opportunity to show their stuff, what’s the difference, we are obviously disinterested in the shit European tournament anyway.

    Taylor who is not a favorite with many, is sitting on he bench, the guys way better than Williamson, Yanga M’Biwa is constantly played out of position and hasn’t had a good game for a while.

    Dummett appears to be flavor of the month at RB, but Hiadarra as by far the better player IMO.

    And I see we have improved (my ass) our set piece deliveries, if we have to designate some johnny come lately,(Dummett) to take care of that role, we are obviously in trouble.

    A decent striker, and a couple of good Central Defenders are badly needed plus I would like to add Grenier and Cabella, to play on either wing as we will have Gouffran and DeJong to play that secondary role.

    It’s apparent Sissoko is not a forward, in which case, leave him in the midfield where we can use his pace and defensive skills, not to mention his long attacking runs forward.

  27. @ 16: I’m convinced we’ll owe more if Haidara gets more appearances. I predict he won’t step on the pitch again this season. I really don’t see that promise in the side. There probably isn’t one player in the squad that I’m confident will be better next season except maybe Yanga-M’biwa. Then there are the aging, the long-term injuries, the want-aways and the loan players. In midfield we’re well stocked for now but everywhere else…there are a whole lot more questions than answers. Even if Ashley sanctions buying half a squad (yeah right) of quality players (yeah right) I can’t see us avoiding the relegation fight next season without a big dose of luck.

    @ 17: with Willo & Colo at CB and shorn of Debuchy & Santon it’s just an objective fact that our D is slow. And yes, EFC rely on Deulofeu and especially Lukaku. Here’s the thing though-I bet when they leave they’re replaced by players of similar quality.

    @ 18: so attack was dire again-and for how many matches now?

    Hey! not only will Bony be available, but his ex Manager, The Prince of Denmark also.

    Rumor’s of him replacing Big Sam.

    Getting Big Sam back would be an improvement on Pardew and his cronies, at least our set pieces would work.

    But I hear we are working on that (it’s been a prime consideration for about a year or more) his name is Dummett.

  29. @ 23: I really don’t get the penchant for playing guys out of position. I remember when he was talking about where to play Sissoko. Apparently he missed everyone in the media comparing him to Patrick Vieira and Yaya Toure as opposed to Cristiano Ronaldo or Andrea Pirlo.

  30. On the subject of Delofeu, he’s a Hollywood player like Benny, ie dazzling on the ball, creative, good at passing, beautiful to watch but doesn’t make a huge defensive contribution. So why oh why don’t Everton just leave him on the bench, say disrespectful things him in the media to turn the fans against him and only bring him on an impact sub for the last few minutes of games once they’re in the sh*t?

  31. Bobby didn’t buy Sylvain Distin but look at him now – In his thirties and still regularly in the heart of defence for one of the better Premier League teams. He now has well over 500 first team appearences in Ligue 1 and the Premier League behind him and he still plays around 40 games a season for Everton.

Where’s the challenge in playing a talented number 10 in a way that allows him to excel when you have the chance to mould him into poor defender?

    Yes I have always rated Distant, who has had a great career in the PL, and with along with Ollie Bernard formed an excellent left defensive duo, while playing for Newcastle.

    Whether Sissoko could be another Viera remains to be seen, the guy has pace, is a decent midfield defensive player and IMO is wasted as a winger.

    IMO he could form a great relationship with a midfield playmaker, as he can both defend and join in, in an attacking role.

    Though he will never be a Ya Ya Toure, but then, who will?

    His forward runs and resilience are obvious , as is his
    unquestionable desire.

    Yes we actually do have the basis of a very good team, which needs a decent striker and at least two or three
    central defenders, being both Colo. and Taylor may be heading elsewhere and one only has to look at our goals against average to figure out why.

    Would it be a good idea, to have only Yanga M’Biwa and Williamson as our central defense, that would be going from the sublime to the ridicules.

    I just don’t have very much confidence in both
    Ashley’s understanding of what’s needed and Pardews ability to deal with the situation.

    Possibly better to get rid of a certain number of non productive players and also ascertain the reasons why.

    When there are numerous young managers, who could undoubtedly do a much better job than those we presently have.

  42. Joe, have you ever read Greer’s book ‘The Beautiful Boy’ where she takes a rather ancient Greek view of sexuality and adolescent boys? At one stage she was slavering over “semen on tap” which was rather controversial for obvious reasons. She wrote about the sexual objectification of women but she was perving over bairns like a dirty old Greek philosopher.

    The only other Australian intellectual is Mel Gibson though.

  44. Actually I think we played harder under Catver, than Pardue, I have to admit there was a good deal of effort, from our midfield and both DeJong and Cisse may yet form a partnership.

    However apart from Colo, the defending left a lot to be desired, constantly being caught on fast breaks.

    Then that’s just an opinion, each of us seeing different things.

    The game could be a harbinger of how things could look, if we were to lose Colo.,Debuchy and Santon.

    Of course we also need someone up front to replace Remy, who appears to be heading for Arsenal, another decent striker with either DeJong or Gouffran, playing behind the striker.

    She smacks of double standards and certainly trips herself up.
    If the shoe was on the other foot she would be up in arms over men seeing women as nothing but sexual objects.
    The whole thing looks like complete hypocrisy on her part and it’s tone is slightly dodgy.
    So it is okay to look at pictures of young boys without a hair on their chest as opposed to 30 year old male adults who shave their chests.

  49. I’m certainly looking forward to the projected clearout, come summer.

    Actually more concerned about those we should be signing, where any blame will obviously be placed on the recently designated goat Charnley, with both Carr and Pardew not about to accept any blame.

    There are the optimist’s who believe Remy may be induced to stay, no way that’s gonna happen, when he has his pick of top clubs to choose from.

    But if this club is to improve, it’s gonna take a bag full of money in order for it to happen and we are all aware of Ashley’s reluctance to put his hand in his pocket.

    So, if in fact there is a big clearout, perhaps we may be seeing a number of youngsters introduced into the lineup, if so god help us, we will be relegation bound by Christmas
    Where regardless of how much Ashley spends may end up a day late and a dollar short and through ignorance end up out of the world’s most rewarding league, his worst nightmare.
    But we also know he’s a gambler, soh!

    I preferred the original ‘Pardew Excuse Bingo,’ which is probably where the Chronic stole the idea from. You’d have a card full of squares and instead of numbers up to 99 you’d have Pardew’s excuses in the squares, eg “the other side were using the wrong tactics” etc…

  54. Chuckles, my critique of Germaine Greer has nothing to do with women, just hypocrisy which affects both sexes equally. I used to live a few doors down the road from another one when I was in Brixton many years ago, Darcus Howe. He’s a famous black racism campaigner. He’s done alot of good things but he’s a total hypocrite too. I once saw him on the TV trying to rip a poor girl to shreds. He called a “mongrel” and all sorts. Her crime? bring of mixed race. He made a bit of noteriety for himself over there once for accusing Joan Rivers of being racist and she responded in her usual dignified, restrained style.

  55. The “other side using the wrong tactics” was a West Ham game that Big Sam won. Pardew said we lost because they were using horrible tactics against us. What he didn’t say was that he was using the very same (long ball) tactics against West Ham, only not as well as West Ham were using them against us!

    That was back when TV actually told a bit of truth rather than the watered down brainwashing fare that exists now.

    One of the last shows i seen him do about Racism across the UK, His son married a white woman so any kids will be mixed race.
    I think he said the North East was the least racist place he encountered on his travels.
    He will look like a hypocrite now though if he has those views.

    I’m trying to think back to whether he was the host of the late night channel 4 show “The Devil’s Advocate”

  57. Yes lads, you are preaching to the choir in regard to Germaine Greer, though I do think in many cases her radicalism, gave pause for though about some things one had not previously considered.

    In regards to Women’s Lib, it being a movement not unlike their predecessors the suffragettes, who’s goals were to improve the lot of women in society.

    Sometimes tending to take wrong turns and allowed more radical groups to be spokespersons, which was not always in their own interest.

    It happens in the introduction of most radical changes, whether political or social.

    It is however, interesting to see some of the results, that came from that movement.

    Certainly a number of women have broken through the glass ceiling, becoming CEO’s of some of the largest corporations, the recent appointment of Mary Barra as CEO of GM, being one.

    Plus in this world where the need for a strong back as opposed to a brighter mind, has placed many women in a position of equal opportunity, resulting in stay at home househusbands and women breadwinners.

    That being the case with some of my friends, one where the stay at home husband, was better suited for the role, he being a chef, the wife being a corporate lawyer.

    Which when it occured thirty years ago was considered quite radical, but in to-days society has become commonplace.

    Something that most women appear to have easily adapted too, but men still find,(for the most part) difficult in accepting.

    Hell I would have enjoyed the role as a kept man, joking of course.

    You have to give the guy top marks for his drive and persistence, refusing to let anything or anyone get in his way.

    Just pure determination.

    Of course he is still here and is one of the longest serving managers in the league.

    Jogging around the pitch, with no desire, just awful. It’s clearly a side in turmoil, with a questionable back four, with no sign of attacking the S’Hampton goal, only a question of time before Southampton score and how many.

    Interesting game, considering how hapless Fulham have been for most of the season.
    The mistake was in not hiring Magath earlier.
    Who has them organized and working hard, resulting in them edging the first half, but a better and younger Everton gradually took over and broke them down at will, late in the game.
    My point is one man, can make an enormous difference, if he happens to be a manager, who knows what he’s doing.

    GS pointed out earlier that Louis Suarez has played a big part in Liverpool’s excellent season. But, if he’d been daft enough to come to us, he’d have been sold ages ago, and we’d have been told that “he wanted to leave and there was nothing we could do about it”.

    The changes we need to see all start with the owner. A change the attitude of the owner, with him coming to realise that the fans need to see effort and AMBITION before they’ll part with their money – then we’ll get a new manager, new investment in the side (as would be promised to any new manager who isn’t a desperado, prepared to come under any circumstances), and a set of players with something to play for other than putting themselves in the shop window.

    There’s nothing to suggest that any of this will happen soon, of course.

    The last thing Ashley wants is somebody TALENTED and AMBITIOUS. Those kind of people expect to be given a chance to further their career (by winning things).     Apparently, the man to blame is UK beer critic, Michael Jackson. I remember him, he did a show about beers of the world on Channel 4 over here many years ago and it was called ‘the Beer Hunter.’ I remember watching that and looking at one of his books about beer as well. All the craft brewers kept coming up with his name as their inspiration and when I think about it, he taught me alot of what I know about beer. He died in 2007. I didn’t know he became a huge cult figure with a load of Yank homebrew people.

It can’t be denied that he’s got some real results to counterbalance the games of pure, distilled awfulness. His records against some top teams like Manchester United and Chelsea have certainly been better than might be expected. We’ve had fairly sustained runs where we’ve played like a lower end top team separated by absolutely hideous runs.

    Not only that, to be able to change tactics, instantaneously and seamlessly, if required.

  136. I see 2 or 3 points. Pardew normally goes on streaks (as did did Derek, but that is a different story). We could lose every game. I don’t know if that is a good or a bad thing as it might get him sacked.

    Remember, Ashley can still say Pardew was sacked for cause after the “headbutt”. Just because he didn’t sack him the day after, doesn’t mean he didn’t deserve to be sacked. Fatty has the resources to tie Pards up in court for years.

    We should have never let Cabaye go, And we should have strengthened in January.

    It’s definitely a combination of Ashley’s running of the club and Pardew’s inconsistency.
    i think the time will come where even Ashley will have to concede that it is that very consistency that makes a good manager, And Pardew is not the man over a full Season.

    What’s wrong with Pardew is – he’s a moldy, talentless journeyman brought in to touch his toes and mind his P’s and Q’s. He’s a guy who won’t ask for anything, and won’t bleat when he doesn’t get it.

    Even if we get lucky with a few quality cut-price signings in the closed season, we might see half his squad sold in the middle of next season without a squeek from him. He’ll be happy as long as he can field eleven players and just hoof the ball into the box – which, as I recall, you rightly weren’t too happy yourself about last season.

    Who bought the club as a plaything but had the vision to project the tv appearances as a major freeby for his real business, Sports Direct.

    Giving him access to a worldwide audience.

    Face it when NUFC are playing at home, how is it possible to miss the Sports Direct advertisements.

    In the early stages he had no clue, certainly no more than an average fan had.

    But face it, it’s been a long time, with lot’s of screw-ups, including relegation.

    And it’s obvious by now, he has reached a conclusion, certainly in regard to the European shit tournament, which not many clubs want to get involved in.

    Due to the general wear and tear on players, without much in the sense of achievement or financial reward, plus it’s resulting demand on having to finance it with a fairly decent sized squad, plus travel expenses,plus make greater demands on the clubs ability to compete in the EPL.

    Ergo, a top ten finish, meaning security to continue to reap the rewards of Tv’s big bucks which are due to increase, and not worry about relegation.

    The other part of the equation is, the present rip off of the French league, buying there best talent, for the purpose of selling them off for a profit, while in the meantime, keeping us in the PL, yeah folks, it’s all about putting money in Mike Ashleys pocket.

    If anyone who hasn’t figured that out by now, obviously
    they have not been paying attention.

    Obviously I haven’t mentioned Pardew or other stuff, that’s just part of Ashleys, cheapass method of keeping expenses to a minimum, or the fact Newcastle fans continue to buy his cheapass products (WONGA shirts).

  148. I think that’s what buys Pardew time as a manager is his occasional results against the “Big Boys”.
    This tends to mask his deficiencies and inconsistencies on a week to week basis.
    When he does get a result he trades on it for weeks while his teams are losing to inferior opposition.
    That is when you start to get the excuses, “That Wasn’t Us”,
    “We Just Didn’t Get The Breaks”, “That Was Unacceptable” etc.

    So when he gets a result against a Man Utd or a Chelsea, Fans are more forgiving to him and he gets away with it.
    It boils my slash because he does tend to walk away from car crashes like some movie stunt man!

    He’ll be promised a modest war chest and he’ll make it sound like he’s been given carte blanche to buy in a top strike force, a creative midfielder etc.

    He’ll buy a few essentially unproven/unblooded players who’ve been touted as targets for a few other name clubs – then he’ll work his ‘magic’ on the field – shutting down in the second half on the strength of a single goal lead, baffling (late) substitutions, launching long balls over the top of midfield etc.

    Anyone making an outstanding contribution will be sold on if there’s the chance of turning a fast buck, and that tosser won’t utter so much as whimper.

  155. I reckon Pardew is a slightly below average manager. Guessing that we’ll finish 9th or 10th this season, that gives him an average finishing position of between 10th and 11th. I reckon, financially speaking, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and the two Manchesters have more clout than us, and that we are (or should be) at the same level as teams like Everton (and maybe West Ham, Villa, Southampton too), so we should be finishing maybe 7th – 9th. Pardew punched above his weight to get us that 5th place finish, below his weight for the 12th and 16th place finishes and probably about where we should be this season (a bit below if we get 10th rather than 9th).

    Thusly I’d say he’s a slightly below average manager. An average manager would have us maybe 8th or 9th every season and a good manager maybe 5th – 7th. It would take a truly top class manager (and maybe a lot of luck too) to get us into the top 4 and, assuming Ashley doesn’t suddenly fork out £100m on the squad, such ventures would be very rare even with a top class manager.

    We really need to start taking the cups seriously as they’re our only realistic chance at silverware.

    Yes but there are always going to be teams punching below or above their weight. He still had to ensure it was us and not another team that filled the void left by Chelsea and Liverpool.

    Over a number of seasons I’d like to think it would average out. I’ll give him credit for that 5th place and take it away from him for the poor finishes even if other teams punched above their weight and shifted us down in those.

  161. Surprise, Man U. had a pretty good outing or if you like, Bayern Munich, played a poor game to-day.

    Bayern controlling the first half, apart from Welbeck missing a golden opportunity, with only the keeper to beat.

    The second half was an improvement, M.U switching to a more direct style, hoofing it over the top, giving the slower Bayern defenders fit’s at time.

    Guess Moyes learned his tactics at the same school as Pardew, like many English club managers, the panic button, brings out a long gone style that tends to confuse and upset non English sides, having never encountered it before.

  162. Yes it’s true their had been a number of sides who either punched above or below their weight’s the season before.
    A number of them only recently recruited, were in the process of instituting their particular style of play.

    Pardew having had a number of years at Newcastle, doesn’t have that excuse (probably the only excuse he can’t use)unless you count the fact that five French players were added to the roster.

    I’m of the opinion, a fifth place finish, will be the highlight of his less than auspicious career and unless we spend a shit-load of money come the summer, don’t expect anything close to fifth again.

    According to UEFA, Bayern Munich are the third best in European competition over the last five years with Barcelona on top according to UEFA rankings. In the last year alone they rate Real Madrid as number one.

    Mediocrity tends to suggest just plugging away in an average, fairly consistent way. We all know that isn’t Pardew though. 5th one season, then 16th. Focus in and just look within one single season, this one so far.

    First 18 games of the Premier League season, Newcastle United played 18 PL games, Won 10, Drawn 3, Lost 5. That’s 33 out of 54 points. That’s 69.666666 recurring points per season. That’s better than when we came fifth with 65 and lower end Champions League form.

    Since then we’ve played 14, Won 4, Drawn 1 and Lost 9. That’s only 13 points out of 42 and 35.29 points per season, which is fighting against relegation points.

    That’s the Silver Headbanger for you. He’s a wildcard, he’s a maverick or whatever, but certainly not in a fun, entertaining way, even when he’s doing well.

    I was just using him as an example of a manager who gets it down and passes it, And how even he now could get more from our squad.

    Personally i wouldn’t swap what Keegan did in the 90’s because he did give us some good and exciting times, And you cannot take that away from him.

    It’s not a case of presenting statistics, all you have to do is watch how Newcastle play.

    Both Pulis and Big Sam, play the most boring, yet statistically successful game in the PL.

    Their goal is primarily to avoid relegation, they are specialists in that role and unlike Pardew know all about defense and set pieces, where the majority of their goals come from.

    But that’s why Pulis is no longer managing Stoke, the fans forced him out, having had enough of watching shit football.

    And BSA will probably suffer the same fate at West Ham, who’s fans appreciate a different brand, one that includes a bit of flair.

    And I agree with the fans of both clubs.

    That will leave basically us, as the only side playing direct football, as other clubs have seen the light and hired managers who understand the modern game.

    But I dare anyone to define Pardew’s game which is nowhere near either managers mentioned above, as we haven’t scored from a set piece all season, well apart from Cabaye’s goals, (where is he now)

    There was a time when Pardew was gushing over HBA, but he has subsequently left both him and Marveaux sitting on the bench.

    Truth is he doesn’t like flair players, never having been one, being more of a plodder like Williamson.

    Well i’m tired of seeing decent players converted into
    “keep your shape plodders” and the only time we win is when the side revert to how they played before coming to St. James’Park.

    This is not rocket science FFS and present all the statistics you like, but I’m in the camp of the Stoke fans, who recognized as long as Pulis was in charge, they would have to watch a brand of football, that was the least entertaining, after all football is supposed to be an entertaining spectacle, not plain boredom.

    Yes, I know, Hugh. I thought about that but I also thought we had the same disparities when Cabaye was actually playing in the side. We came 5th with Cabaye, we also came 16th with Cabaye. We’ve had winning runs with Cabaye and we’ve had losing runs with Cabaye. We’ve been great with Cabaye and we’ve been shite with Cabaye.

    He was an important player and a big loss, but Pardew’s attempts to reshape the team are a joke. Two forwards who never score and a centre forward who can score a bit is playing on the left wing. Aye Worky, there are lots of variables, which is why I reckon the league finishing position as compared to where we perhaps should be in terms of funds invested in the squad is as good a measure as any. That ideally needs to be averaged over a good number of seasons to balance out all the individual spikes and troughs due to the many influencing variables.

    There are other measures of a manager of course. Perhaps the way the football is played is another one. Football is, after all, part of the entertainment business.

    Sure almost everyone practices set pieces, but it’s not something that is part of a tactical plan, that includes direct football.

    Take Barcelona, with five or six short players up front exchanging roles, they are as likely to use a short pass from a corner, as opposed to putting it in the air, their game being primarily on the ground.

    Plus I disagree with your version of the Pulis firing, it’s well known the fans had been on his case for some time and any threat of relegation only added fuel to the fire.

    As for the statement, newly promoted sides play percentage football, not sure exactly what you are implying.

    But if you mean a direct game, possibly must have missed, both Swansea and Southampton’s games, which were
    as far as you can get from percentage football.

  184. I’d take winning something over entertainment at the moment. If we played defensive, long-ball football, winning matches 1-0 and got a trophy I’d be happy. But only for one season. Over the long term I’d rather play exciting, attacking football even if it cost us a few points here and there.

    Although that’s assuming that winning things and playing attractive football are mutually exclusive and I had to choose one or the other. In reality they’re not mutually exclusive of course and lots of teams seem to manage both.

    Yes money has changed many things in football, in fact taking over and changing the game, mostly in England, other countries leagues, not so much, none having the earnings of the EPL to bolster their sides and due the present economic conditions, the EPL becoming stocked mainly by foreign imports, especially from Spain, which took away the tax breaks for their players.

    And as I have recently read some of your statement’s which were somewhat favorable to Pardew.

    Though I can’t ever see that happening and I hope you are not suggesting, you would be in favor of retaining him and his style of football, if he were to earn us a top four spot.

    Though I really can’t see that ever happening, unless he gets a brain transplant.

    Getting real! certainly in regard to NUFC.

    Certainly with the clowns presently in charge of the club, to win anything is only a pipe dream, which most fans hang onto.

    The fact is to win a title, or compete in the Champions League, would take much more than Ashley is willing to spend.

    Plus, could he even if willing, take on the big London and Northwestern sides, doubt it.

    I was certain this seasons the Spurs side, having spent a hundred million on players, would make it into the top four, which was not to be.

    Though let’s see how they do with a manager, like Van Gaal, (supposedly seeing a good opportunity, a ready made side).

    Though what to-days league standings do reflect is the overall importance of a good manager, which has become more important than the actual squad.

    The present rumors in regard to a big cleanouts etc. in store for NUFC and the fact Chelsea, Man Citeh, Arsenal and Man. u. will all spend big money on players, this summer means stiffer competition, for those top spots.

    And when you include both Liverpool, Everton, Spurs and perhaps Southampton, we could very well end up outside the top half.

    So face it this club is going nowhere points wise, then that being the case how about buying us a bunch of flair players and hire a manager known for his attacking tactics (no not KK) and at least have some entertainment outta the season.

    As opposed to Worky’s attitude “it’s point’s that
    count”, not as far as Newcastle chances of winning a top spot are concerned, lets play some attractive football and zero in on winning a domestic cup.

    WTF worky? What did we win in the modern era BEFORE Keegan’s first spell? And what did we win AFTER? Yeah, Sir Bobby stabilized the ship and gave us a few good seasons, but KK came desperately close. Twice.

    And all this ‘loser’ bullsh|t might have its place in other countries/cultures sports, but teams COMPETING and playing good football in England will always be respected by the fans. I don’t EVER want to see us play like we did under Fat Sam again.

    I don’t believe in prejudice, tunyc. I take them both Keegan and Kinnear the same without any preconceptions or bigotry.     And as I stated above, I doubt if either he or BSA will last at either Palace or West Ham, being the owners understand and react to their fans wishes, plus both clubs have a history of playing entertaining football.

    Which could mean we NUFC could end up with the last footballing dinosaur in the PL, obviously Ashley unlike his owner counterpart’s pays little attention, to the fans, having his own agenda.

    Yes, maybe quite a few Stoke fans did get a bit tired of the style, the board more so or he’d still be there. However, to suggest that Stoke fans as a bloc were all “calling for his head” is taking things too far.

    A few smaller teams brought in some managers playing a more flowing game without being relegated (I wouldn’t include Roberto Martinez in that as he WAS relegated. :-) and that changed the old mantra that you have to play a percentage game to survive if you’re one of the lesser Premier League sides and I daresay the Stoke board took note. Mark Hughes though? Fairplay though, he’s certainly doing alright so far. Getting back to Pulis, whatever his style, he’s still never been relegated.

    Stoke fans knew what Pulis did for the club over the decade or so he was there, and that it was very doubtful they would be where they are without him. When Crystal Palace played Stoke, most of the Stoke fans were wearing Pulis style baseball caps as a tribute.

    But will never be secure because of the ugly style of football they resort too.

    All I can say concerning Martinez and Wigan, is he never

    He’s also doing a pretty good job at Everton and will probably finish in the top six or seven, plus I believe he will end up managing an even bigger club eventually.

Whereas it seems to me that Keegan is well liked, which doesn’t surprise. He’s spirited and confrontational at times but he’s also clearly affectionate and has some humility to him. For example, he’s had at least as much success as a player and a manager as Kinnear and yet he didn’t spend time telling everyone about it in interviews when hired.

    Even the interviewers are equipping him with excuses!
    They are putting words into his mouth and he is going with it.

    Joe, around the same as last season so I wouldn’t call him a “one season wonder.” Snodgrass is a right winger primarily but it’s so harder to say how a player would fit in at Newcastle now because it’s impossible to say what Pardew would do with them when they got here.

    Fer looks like has has real potential and we will see what he does over the next couple of seasons.
    It can be hard to make a good assessment of players when they are in a struggling side.
    Some shine out against the crap and others need to play with better players who will give them more of the ball.

    As for Pardew i am hoping we will see the back of him before long.
    I know Ashley would prefer to keep hold of a lap dog but even he doesn’t want to try and fund another relegation.

  314. Joe, in my scouting files the cheap right winger I probably looked at most closely was Oussama Assaidi, who was cheaper than Snodgrass. He was snapped up by Liverpool though and then they loaned him to Stoke.

    My top right winger was Mohammed Salah at Basle, but he was considerably more expensive than Snodgrass and was snapped up by Mourinho at Chelsea.

    I’m presuming that the idea of buying one or two first team players a year is in addition to replacing players who leave. The way I see it, we’ll lose Remy for sure, I doubt we’ll make De Jong’s loan permanent given his lack of goals and Shola’s contract it not being renewed, so that’s three down. On top of that we could lose Colo, Debuchy, Ben Arfa, Tiote or Santon. Of course we may lose none of them but I’d have though we’d lose one or two.

    I reckon we might need anywhere from three to six players just to replace those who leave.

    The real problem stems from the amount of TV based funds available to EPL sides and the fear of dropping into the second tier.

    You very well know juries are selected, by a process where both defense and prosecution, interview a pool of prospective jury members.

    However the presiding judge has the ability to and does direct that jury in it’s findings, which has a major effect on the outcome.

    Anyway, lets not discuss that.

    Rather the question of how come just about every case involving The Met, where someone dies as a result of police action, neither any Met. officer of consequence, takes responsibility or admits to any wrongdoing by the force.

    Or in the case of Duggan, where the evidence of non police members clearly indicates, an execution, not one police man involved, received any blame, and in fact were praised for their actions.

    Yeah once in a rare while they throw a rotton egg, (the guy who killed the poor unfortunate news vendor, on his way home, who was herded up in a demonstration) who when they looked at his prior record, saw a sacrificial goat, that could be thrown to the crowd.

    But even then, he too was never charged with murder, let alone man-slaughter, when there was a clear-cut case, backed by film evidence.

    As for those involved in the execution of the Brazilian kid, who even though they had him under physical control in the tube, fired a number of bullets into his head.

    What was the result, the head of the Met refused to resign or accept any blame, those involved in the execution, went scot free and probably no one thought about a review of a system that obviously allows for the execution of suspects.

    It’s like they are a World Police Force and they are all dressed the same in dark blue and black body armour.
    You can switch the channel on your television and the World over you can see these Police battering innocent people who are protesting.

    Though no great fan of dictator Putin, he is resisting and the situation is at a stalemate, being Western Europe is dependent on Russian energy reserves.

    Putin obviously wants a cordon sanitaire surrounding Russia, a protective zone seeing the recent NATO advances easward into Poland and the massive US Military Structures built in Kosovo.

    Of course the Crimea (which was ceded to the Ukraine, by Kruschev, never believing the USSR would ever disintigrate)

    Has traditionally belonged to Russia, plus it’s their only Naval Base on the Black Sea and therefor point of naval exit/entry into the Mediterranean.

    Not to mention the fact the area has enormous potential for the discovery of both natural gas and oil.

    It would be laughable, were it not such a serious situation, and has now reached a stage, egged on by rabid nationalists and militarists on either side.

    Through the war, not just after. I have a very good friend whose Ukrainian father fought for the SS during the war. He’s still alive. He was 14, conscripted at gun point and told to either shoot the people he hated as much as the Jews hated Hitler, or have his head blown off.

    You have to understand the context. To real Ukrainians, the Russians are the same as nazis are to Jews. Stalin killed at least as many Ukrainians as Hitler killed Jews in the Homolodor, the great starvation before the war. Stalin was just as evil as Hitler, far more so to the average Ukrainian.

    A few years back, their Chinese counterparts even persuaded some people that it was the Dalai Lama who at fault over Tibet. They showed pictures of him surrounded by original eastern swastikas, a symbol of peace which existed thousands of years before the Nazi one. This had ignorant people believing that the Dalai Lama was actually a Nazi! It’s amazing how stupid and gullible people can be.

    As I’ve already explained in the past, areas of Eastern Europe whcih suffered under the yoke of Russian oppression are a little behind the times due to being behind the Iron Curtain as Churchill called it. Hence SOME might have attitudes which are stuck back in the forties on some issues. So did our parents and grandparents. This was a time when the institutionally racist United States still had segregation and lynchings. I will say that is one of the advantages of the EU, it will have the opposite effect.     One book which i’m still reading, having to take it one small piece at a time the title is “Orderly and Humane”
    which covers the expulsion of the Germans from Eastern Europe, following the wars end.

    Of course to-day it would be known as “Ethnic Cleansing”
    Of course this is not in general a well known history, with most people in the UK and US, wishing to believe, the war stopped and everyone went home.

  399. tunyc, I did some research on Teflon and it says that it is safe, the potential problem is Perfluorooctanoic Acid which is in alot of things, including food itself. It isn’t in Teflon apart from being used in the process of making it and if there is any residual Perfluorooctanoic Acid in the teflon and the pan gets heatred to a very high temperature, it might be bad to inhale, maybe.     I was led to understand that there were ancient Tutsi kings that used to rule in the areas of Rwanda and Burundi.
    When the Belgians and The Germans turned up they were categorizing anyone as one or the other by measuring skulls of people and lumping them into either group.
    So eventually no one really knew who was what so the name Tusti was given to any of the ruling classes and land owners or cattle drovers with a certain amount of livestock.
    If that said farmer lost his cattle he would then be demoted to Hutu.

    So in the end it just became a form of control for the colonials of the time to get them to work for them.
    They were basically using old mythology mixed with a bit of truth to keep people in line.

    It seems to me that the innocent people of Rwanda have been continually manipulated over the years by forces outside of the Country.
    The hatred seems to be whipped up in Burundi, Tanzania where most of these soldiers come from and it is always the innocent Rwandans on both sides who get slaughtered.

    But that’s just ridiculous. Why not be more ambitious and say Brian McDermott? Little Fulham on the verge of relegation get German legend Felix Magath. If they can get someone like that, why can’t we?

    Dyche’s voice sounds painful to listen to, like he’s just been gargling with pieces of broken glass. I thought it was all shouting during a game at first, but I saw him on another show and he sounds like that anyway.

    In any case, regardless of which desperados are being mentioned for the job, it’s only the FANS who want Pardew out – and only around %95 of us, at that. When did the FANS opinion ever matter to chubs & co?

    The only chance of getting shot of the toe-toucher is if he finally dies of shame and embarrassment – or if the SHEEP stop turning out for every game and forking out for season tickets.

    Really, there’s no news at all. Everything’s the same as last week (and the week before, and the week before…) – there’s nothing to play for; we know that all the decent players are leaving in the closed season; Pardew’s staying. If we stay above eleventh place he’s still on for a bonus, FFS.

    The crap icing on a very horrible cake would be if he somehow flukes a result at Arsenal on his return to the dugout. In his mind, that would amount to some kind of ‘second coming’ that we all should cheer his name for and celebrate like a big cup win.

    Anyway, I did watch Liverpool / Citeh and that was fun. It will probably come down to goal difference at the end of the season and Liverpool have us – so that must be at leasts plus 6 more for them. Even if Pards gets sacked, it will be Carver,so that would probably add another 2.

    Pardew facilitates the mediocrity because his value to Ashley as an unquestioning henchman is far more useful to him than getting us a talented manager.

    Pardew’s now saying that the rot started for him with the sale of Ba – he’s wrong (as well as being a chickensh|t for whining about that now). The rot started when Andy Caroll was sold and the profits from the sale went Gawd knows where. And pards didn’t bat an eyelid. Not so much as a carefully-worded hint of concern to the media. And even helped with spin – as he did with Ba; as he did with Cabaye.

    Maybe we’ll get a FULL ON WHINGE from him about all that when he finally does go (which would just be a disgusting spectacle). Having said that, I think he’ll probably agree to a non-disclosure clause in his pay-off agreement.

  488. I first saw them on TOTP in the late seventies when ‘Take on the World’ was in the charts, GS. I remember pointing out to a mate that Rob H. “obviously has a bit of a Brando thing going”!

    I saw Paccino in ‘Cruising’ a couple of years later and I began to wonder… :)

    ‘Take on the World’ is still one of my favorite heavy tracks ever.

    Darth, I know a few things about Cameron and another Tory minister from people I knew who met them but I shouldn’t really say about who they were, how they met them and so on on here. They are both grade one knobs according to the two testimonies I heard from them though and the minister tried to do something absolutely outrageous apparently.

  493. GS, Darth, the current leader of the House of Commons, Andrew Lansley found himself on a crowded commuter train down here in the smoke. He immediately tried to order one of the staff (who I knew) to kick one of the proles off his or her seat so he could sit down. When my friend tried to explain he wasn’t allowed to do that, Lansley went absolutely bonkers, wanted to see his superiors, have him sacked on the spot etc…
