Liverpool vs Newcastle United match banter!

Liverpool v Newcastle United
Time to break the Anfield hoodoo!
Venue: Anfield, Liverpool.
Date: Sunday, 4th November.
Kick off: 4:00pm
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Manchester).
UK TV: Sky Sports.

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our “match banter” feature for this afternoon’s away game against the Scousers.

As you may know already, Anfield has been an awful hunting ground for the Magpies in recent times, and you’d have to go back to the the days of the permed one’s “Entertainers” to find our last victory on the red side of Merseyside, and even that was in the League Cup! That was a 0-1 fourth round victory on Wednesday 29th November, 1995. Some of you will also remember that this was also the year which saw the first of two classic 3-4 Premiership encounters at Anfield (with the next one happening the season after). The first one, in April 1996, is of course regarded by many as one of the finest Premiership games ever, and was only settled with a goal by Stan Collymore in the second minute of stoppage time. For our last Premiership victory, you have to go all the way back to 16 April 1994, when we chalked up a 0-2 victory with Andy Cole and Rob Lee doing the honours on that occaision. Andy Cole scored a total of 41 goals in 46 games that season, which wasn’t a bad effort. (more…)

NUFC midfielders and forwards.
Attack, attack, attack!
Following on from my piece on the contributions of our defenders and utilty players this season, let’s carry on with our assessment of Newcastle’s players with a view to deciding who is our Player of the season. I’ll be moving on the engine room now, and later the forwards. There are undoubtedly a few worthy recipients here!

Newcastle United v Manchester United – Match Preview

January 3rd, 2012 | 81 Comments |

Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.
Hope he lhas a face like this after the game!
Venue: St James’ Park, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Date: 4th January 2012
Kick Off: 8.00PM
Referee: Howard Webb
Hair by: Rooney of Croxteth

Manchester United make their seasonal pilgrimage to St James’ Park in what could be viewed, for them anyway, as a tough game – particularly as they seem to be in relative disarray.

Wayne Rooney and a couple of the club’s lesser lights (Darron Gibson and Johnny Evans) allegedly went out for a meal and a few drinkies on Boxing Night. This wasn’t against any of the Manchester club’s rules. However, they subsequently committed the crime of looking decidedly shabby and putting in a poor performance in training.

As a result manager Alex Ferguson threw a strop and dropped them for the home game against Blackburn Rovers. ‘Ol Red Nose was rewarded for his tantrum on his 70th birthday by a defeat from the second-bottom club.

If rumours are to be believed, Mr Rooney is hopping mad about being dropped and fined £200,000 but has managed to “keep his hair on”. (more…)

“Newcastle can survive” – Rob Lee.

Rob Lee in his playing days.
Rob Lee in his playing days.
Former Newcastle midfielder Rob Lee has tipped his old club to survive in the Premier League this time around, even if there are no significant additions to the team over the summer.

Lee is very much the poster boy from the last time Newcastle embarked on a return to top flight football back in 1993, and clocked up and impressive 303 appearances during his ten year tenure on Tyneside.

It’s nice to hear some positivity coming from our former players for a change, especially as a vast array of former players appear to have already written off the current squads chances of survival. Unfortunately it isn’t all sweeteness and light from Lee though, and whilst he does believe that the current squad is capable of ensuring survival, he has also warned that money will be needed in the future if the team are to progress to the next level. Whatever happened to the class of 1993?

Class of 1993: What happened to them?
Class of 1993: What happened to them?
The other day I wrote an article debating which team would come out on top in a match between the promotion side of 1993 and the promotion side of 2010.

The response was mixed, although the poll is still open, and opinion was pretty evenly split when deciding just which team is stronger and what the outcome would be. Would the attacking style that started to show itself back then triumph over the rock solid, never-say-die attitude of today’s team? Plenty of debate took place amidst an awful lot of reminiscing. However, that got me thinking about what happened to some of that team from 1993?

It is well known what happened with some of the team, especially the likes of Rob Lee, Andy Cole, and Lee Clark, but what about the rest? Is 17 years enough time to forget just how the careers of those players panned out after leaving us? I thought I would track back and take a look at the fortunes of some of the players and just what twist their career path took after 1993. (more…)
