Testing times ahead for Toon – Again!

Newcastle United: Taking on the "big guns" next.
Newcastle United: Taking on the "big guns" next.
The testing never stops ’round here! As we go into the lull that is international football and worse still, friendly internationals, we see our first major flood of injuries hobble into the Saint James’ Park sickbay.

At least we’ll have a couple of weeks to try and get over some of them. All the while attempting to ready ourselves for the next round of tests. Next up will be the Manchester’s of City and United. With City returning to the place where Hatem Ben Arfa was so cruelly hacked down and the Lads were cheated out of a result with ref decisions, what with a dodgy penalty for them, and a clear one for us turned down. Citeh have spent even bigger since then and it’ll be one tough game. Of course the ‘pundits’ will at least be satisfied that we’re being tested properly for once. If we get an better ref, who knows what can happen?

I saw enough of Man City’s game at QPR to suggest that if you have a go at them, goals are available as their back line looks a little suspect at times. It’ll be interesting to see if Hatem Ben Arfa gets to play this game, and it would be even better if he did and made them pay for last seasons debacle. (more…)

Two unsettled clubs: Newcastle United v Arsenal match preview

Newcastle United v Arsenal match preview.
Gunners are our visitors on Saturday.
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for the 2011/2012 Barclays Premier League season to begin. First up for the Magpie’s is the visit to St James’ Park of Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal. This game of course was the same fixture last season which has gone down in Premier League history after the two sides ended up sharing a 4-4 draw. Can we expect the same drama come Saturday afternoon this time?

If you’re not heading to St James’ Park for the game, you’ll be able to find it via ESPN, kick-off time is at 5.30pm (BST). Undoubtedly ‘Mr. Happy’ Craig Burley will probably be co-commentating this fixture, so you may want to mute your television sets, or you could tune in to radio Newcastle while watching the action unfold. I’m also sure Robbie Savage is now a ‘pundit’ for ESPN, so you might want to tune in 5 minutes or so before kick-off. (more…)

Fiorentina friendly announced for August 6th at St James’ Park.

Fiorentina: A stiff test for the lads.
Newcastle United have announced a friendly match against Italian Serie A side, Fiorentina. The match will be played at St James’ Park on Saturday, 6th August with kick off at 3PM.

So far, Newcastle had previously announced two friendly games against Darlington at the Darlington Arena (15th July), and Leeds at Elland Road (31st July). Between these fixtures, the club will be on a three match tour of the United States where the Magpies will face Sporting Kansas City (July 20), Orlando City (July 23) and Columbus Crew (July 26).

The Fiorentina game is the first home friendly to be announced, and of course, the side from Florence should provide the stiffest test so far of the Magpies’ pre season fixtures, and should give us a good look at how the new signings fare against quality opposition. Last year, they finished ninth in Italy’s Serie A under Serbian manager, Siniša Mihajlović, and their squad features players such as World Cup winning Italian international, Alberto Gilardino.

The one and only previous meeting between the two sides was in the final of the 1972/3 Anglo Italian Cup in Florence, which Joe Harvey’s Magpie team won 2-1, with a goal from SkySport’s very own David Craig along with a home goal from Fiorentina keeper, Superchi. Here’s hoping for a repeat of that at our place 38 years on! (more…)
