What’s the real story with Romain Amalfitano’s Toon signing?

April 25th, 2012 | 6 Comments |

Romain Amalfitano - Latest Toon signing?
Amalfitano: Bringing "Champagne football" to Newcastle?
As regular readers of this site will know, we usually bring you the hottest Toon news first.

Well, back in early March, I wildly speculated reported that Stade de Reims midfielder, Romain Amalfitano, had signed a pre contract agreement with Newcastle United. In truth, I wasn’t quite the first to report it. The Independent ran a fairly insignificant story reporting that Derek Llambias was “happy” with the club’s latest set of accounts, but tacked on to the end was this:

“The club yesterday completed the signing of the French winger Romain Amalfitano from Reims on a three-year deal.”

Which was odd. No one seemed to take a blind bit of notice of it at the time apart from yours truly, so I did some background research on it, eventually tracking back to this story from the in France sports journal, “L’Equipe”, which went as follows (according to my rough as a bear’s arse French translation):

“Scoring three times this season with Reims, who will rise, Romain Amalfitano will have caught the eye of recruiters from Newcastle, who will recruit for next season. According to our information, a three year contract has been proposed to the young attacking midfielder (22 years old). He arrived in Champagne in 2010 from Evian Thonon Gaillard F.C. and will be out of contract in June.” (more…)

Who is Adam Maher? Probing Toon’s latest target

March 20th, 2012 | 37 Comments |

Adam Maher.
Adam Maher: Precocious talent.
After the news (broken on this site, incidentally) that Newcastle United have already signed a pre contract agreement with Romain Amalfitano. The latest name which has been coming up in recent reports about Newcastle United’s scouting activity is that of precocious 18 year old AZ Alkmaar midfielder, Adam Maher.

One thing which is certain is that the club have been scouting him quite closely, and if they were planning a “daring raid / swoop” on the player, the fee could be probably be in the area of around £3 – 5 million for this very promising youngster, who is the youngest player to score for any Dutch club in the Europa League (apparently). The bad news is that the club may face some fairly stiff competition from several other suitors, though this is hardly surprising with excellent young players like Maher.

Despite his young age, the Dutch-Morroccan teenager has been a regular in the AZ Alkmaar first team (who are currently topping the Dutch Eredivisie). He is a product of their youth academy, having been on the club’s books since the tender age of eleven.

Another mischief making making story in the execrable Daily Fail has been reporting that Newcastle have been looking at Maher as a replacement for Cheick Tiote. Though the players are both central midfielders with Maher also playing on the right, they are both different animals with Maher being more of the attacking and playmaking variety, and he certainly isn’t goal shy (see below).

Anyway, here are his stats for AZ Alkmaar so far (from ESPN). (more…)

Papiss Demba Rodney Cissé – The full monty! (Interview, videos stats…)

Papiss Cisse signs for Newcastle!
Cisse: He's here! He's gone! But he'll be back!
First of all dear reader, I would like to apologise.

I meant to have this posted yesterday evening. However, due to a certain bearded Newcastle United shirt sponsor, his chronically unreliable Broadband and constantly engaged customer service (who’s existence I am beginning to doubt), that sadly wasn’t possible in the end. As a certain Mr.J.Rotten once (rightly) said in regard the fellow in question:

“Never trust a Hippy.”

But I suspect that you don’t really want to read any more of my enraged rambling (unless perhaps, you want to know which Broadband provider to avoid like the plague) so I’ll get on with it!

Below is the interview given by Papiss Demba Cisse to “NUFC TV” after his signing was confirmed yesterday, along with additional verbiage from Alan Pardew and Derek Llambias (Booooooo!)

This is what Cissé had to say on his signing: (more…)

Newcastle United vs QPR match banter!

Newcastle United vs QPR.
No Joey Barton show this time.
Venue: St James’ Park, Toon.
Date: Sun 15th Jan 2011.
Kick-Off: 1:30 pm.
Referee: Chris Foy.

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our regular “match banter” feature.

This time the Magpies will be facing the transitional Queen’s Park Rangers under new manager, Mark Hughes, he of the slightly annoying mid-sentence sharp intakes of breath.

Like ourselves, it will be a somewhat depleted QPR on the pitch this afternoon, with key players such as captain, Joey Barton, Alejandro Faurlín, Armand Traoré and Adel Taarabt out through suspension, injury and the African Cup of Nations (x2) respectively. Of course it goes without saying that another Toon old boy, Kieron Dyer, will be also be out to injury as usual. On the QPR’s opening game of the season he was carried off on a stretcher with an injured foot. After a lengthy layoff, he was finally set to make his comeback, then somewhat inevitably injured it again in a reserves game! (more…)

Is Pardew planning daring January swoop for new number 9 after all?

Jason Prior: Toon's next number 9?
Jason Prior: Toon's next number 9?
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew annonunced recently that he has abandoned plans to sign a new number 9 in the Janauary transfer window since the deal for Sochaux’s Modibo Maiga fell through at the medical stage.

However, this may be just a cunning stunt by the Silver Supremo as it has been revealed that the club are currently planning a daring swoop for Bognor Regis’ number 9 goal machine, Jason Prior.

The 23 year old Isthmian League Division One (South) hitman has been given an “invitation to train” with Newcastle United, and has revealed on his own Twitta page that he will be having a trial for the Magpies, saying.

“Sorting everything out tomorrow. Will let you know when I do.”

However, as is the norm for Newcastle United, there is a hint of controversy in the air. An insider from Blue Square South giants, Eastleigh FC, claims the club had what was considered to be a “binding agreement” for the highly rated hotshot to join Eastleigh in a massive, record busting £12,000 deal in the new year. The same insider also claimed that the club may have a very good case for compensation from Bognor should the player end up on Tyneside.

A Facebook page for “Jason Prior, Bognor’s number 9” is here. I hope it’s written by an enthusiastic Bognor fan, because if it’s written by the hitman himself, he sounds like a bit of a big’ed! (only joking if you’re reading this Jason). ;-)

Anyway, below are some clips of the Bognor Pele in action. Will he be the next Andy Carroll? (more…)
