Is Lascelles on the Way Out? Who Could Replace Him?

June 13th, 2018 | No Comments |

Jamaal Lascelles.
‘Should I stay or should I go?’
Jamaal Lascelles was one of Newcastle United’s key players in the 2017-18 season as the Magpies managed to stave off relegation and consolidate their place in the Premier League. Needless to say, there are now rumours circulating that the solid central defender could be on his way to a bigger club. Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for the possible sale of Toby Alderweireld this summer and will need to bring in a replacement for the Belgian. Liverpool and Chelsea are also looking for extra additions to help them tighten up at the back. If Lascelles does depart, it would leave Rafa Benitez with big shoes to fill at St James’ Park. A season of exaggerations for Newcastle United (+win a Toon shirt)

Rafa - Manager of the Season?
Rafa – Manager of the Season?
Going on recent history, it is of course understandable to expect the worst at St James’ Park, but whilst fears of another potential relegation for the Toon were somewhat exaggerated earlier in the season, three wins on the spin has taken things in the opposite direction, with the hyperbole starting to go into overdrive. GQ magazine even went so far as to claim that Benitez has performed a “miracle” and that this miracle deserves to be rewarded with a ‘Manager of the Year’ award.

Don’t get me wrong, I am very glad that Benitez is our manager, I thought he was an excellent manager many years ago at Valencia and always thought he would do a very good job on Tyneside in the long run, but steady on! (more…)

Why Newcastle can’t progress under Ashley

Ashley Out!
Ashley – Over a decade of unpopularity on Tyneside.
It’s fair to say Mike Ashley is not a popular man on Tyneside. The breakdown of £300 million takeover talks has given Newcastle United an uncertain future at a time when we should be celebrating our 125th anniversary.

While the sporting-goods tycoon deserves credit for bringing in Rafa Benitez after a slew of bad managerial decisions, his continued presence is only holding the club back. Here’s why:

Lack of ambition

Back in 2013, we shared the news that Mike Ashley had a net worth of £3 billion, which then made him the fourth-richest club owner in the Premier League. While he is now only the 10th richest owner, you’d think he was one of the poorest. (more…)

Newcastle’s January Transfer Deadline Day 2018 In Review

February 2nd, 2018 | No Comments |

Islam Slimani
Islam Slimani – On loan from Leicester.
Transfer deadline day saw Newcastle United welcome two new arrivals to Tyneside, plus a number of departures from St James’ Park. All of these deals were just temporary, though, and came late on with the January transfer window slamming shut at 23:00 GMT on January 31st.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez finally secured a new striker in Leicester City’s Algeria international Islam Slimani, and got another goalie with Slovakia’s Martin Dubravka joining from Czech club Sparta Prague until the end of the season.

Newcastle missed out on England frontman Daniel Sturridge, who chose to make a temporary switch from Liverpool to West Bromwich Albion – a team more fancied in the Premier League betting on relegation with bet365. Feyenoord’s Denmark international Nicolai Jorgensen was another rumoured forward target. (more…)

The History of the Tyne-Wear Derby

Sunderland fans.
Sunderland: Relegated this season.
Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League last season means that there is no Tyne-Wear derby on the fixture list for a second consecutive season, unless we draw each other in the FA Cup.

The Tyne-Wear derby is one of the oldest, with the first meeting between the two sides taking place in 1883, and also one of the biggest in English football with two of the most passionate sets of fans in the country following two of England’s biggest clubs.

Betfair, the sports exchange whose services allows punters to place football bets against each other, have produced the below graphic highlighting the biggest derby games in England. (more…)
