Carroll rescues another point.
Carroll rescues another point.
It was another away day, another game where we looked below-par and another game in which we got something out of that we probably didn’t deserve. A share of the spoils at Ashton Gate this evening has gone a long way to saving my wife’s weekend as she claims I am ‘unbearable when Newcastle lose’, and I very easily could have been classed as ‘unbearable’ as the game panned out.

Some of you may be aware that my wife follows Portsmouth, yet she was there cheering even louder than I was when the ball hit the back of the net for the away side, perhaps through sheer relief that I may not be a moody git this weekend after all, although I claim it’s because I’m turning her into a Newcastle United fan. It’s frustrating, the 2,200 travelling fans looked like having very little return on their 600 mile investment, but yet again they head home happy. (more…)

Another victory for the lads?
Another victory for the lads?
Well, it’s another long trip for the lads this afternoon, as Newcastle United take on Bristol at their West Country fortress, Ashton Gate.

Currently in the temporary charge of Keith Millen after the departure “by mutual consent” of previous incumbent, Gary Johnson, the Robin’s form has hardly been spectacular recently. Even at home, they have won only two of their last six matches. They have also been carrying a few injuries too. Having written all that though, they did manage to eke out a point out of us in a dour 0-0 draw at SJP much earlier in the season, so as usual, it wouldn’t be wise to count our chickens until they are hatched and various other metaphors. How to get there? What about a nice pair of Bristols?
How to get there? What about a nice pair of Bristols?
The next destination for what looks like a whistle-stop tour of the Championship takes Newcastle to the city of Bristol for the Saturday evening encounter with Bristol City at Ashton Gate. A kick off of 5:20pm should keep fans without tickets, or those who choose not to do the 600 mile round trip happy as it means TV coverage is available for the clash with the managerless Robins.

As ever, we’ll leave the Toon down the usual A1(M) route and join onto the M1 where you should continue south until leaving at J23a (A42/M42). Follow the A42 then M42 right to the end where you’ll meet the M5. Head south down the M5 and leave at J18. Follow the A4 (Bristol Airport/Taunton) along the river and eventually you’ll go over a swing bridge. Bear left after that and you should be able to see the ground on the left.

Those opting to travel by train will probably end up at the main Temple Meads train station which is either a taxi ride or 45 minute walk away from the ground. (more…)
