Routledge completes Swans move

Deal agreed with Swansea City.
Wayne Routledge off to Swansea.
It seems Newcastle United have decided that Wayne Routledge simply does not fit into the Newcastle squad and have sold the lad to Swansea for a reported £2m.

Wayne hasn’t had much luck in the Premier League and received criticism when he left Crystal Palace for Tottenham Hotspur from the then owner, Simon Jordan. Last January the powers that be decided that Routledge was fit to be loaned to his former club Queens Park Rangers where he helped the club to automatic promotion with 19 appearances and 5 goals.

Loaning the lad out was a surprise to us all has he was our only designated RW – an area we have sorely lacked bodies in for a long time now. Perhaps it was the bicep in his jaw that prompted the decision – who knows?

Talking to the Swansea City FC website, he had this to say:

“I’m looking forward to the challenge. It’s taken a couple of days to get everything agreed, but I’m excited about getting started.

“I’ve had a good chat with the manager and he really impressed me. I had heard a lot of good things about him and the chat only reinforced my belief that moving to Swansea was the right thing to do.” (more…)

Have Newcastle United got their priorities right?

Hughton: Which way will he turn tomorrow?
Hughton: Which way will he turn tomorrow?
Chris Hughton will begin the toughest week of his NUFC career tomorrow when his United side begin a home double against Arsenal in the Carling Cup before a derby day with Sunderland on Sunday.

Tomorrow night’s last 16 meeting with the Gunners was unexpected for Hughton and arguably a game he did not want his side to have after his second 11 edged Chelsea in a 4-3 thriller at Stamford Bridge.

But here we are facing a mid week game five days before his first derby as the United boss at home to Arsene Wenger’s side.

The big question however is what approach will the mild mannered Magpie boss take tomorrow? Will United again call upon the reserves of our limited squads with the likes of Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands returning.

Or will he gamble against what is sure to be a young Arsenal side, after all If we can get past Arsenal that would leave only Manchester United left from last season’s top 6 assuming they get past struggling Wolves tonight. (more…)

Hughton: "Big blow".
Hughton: "Big blow".
Newcastle United manager, Chris Hughton, has been talking to Tyneside newspaper, The Chronic on the “big blow” of losing deputy, Colin Calderwood, to Hibs. He also spoke on the search for his replacement, which, said Hughton, he would be dealing with “over the next couple of days”.

Starting with a tribute to his erstwhile deputy, Hughton said:

“For us it is very much a case of business as usual.

“It’s a big blow to lose Colin Calderwood but certainly one I can understand.

“He’s not only very good at what he does as a coach but he’s also a very good friend.”

On Calderwood’s sudden move to Hibs, Hughton continued:

“When an opportunity like this comes along it is difficult to turn down, and it is no surprise he was in the frame because he has such good pedigree.

“He’s looked to take the opportunity and I wish him well.” (more…)

Three points this weekend would lift us all!

Hughton - Can he cut? Maybe he can...
Hughton - Can he cut? Maybe he can...
I think it’s fair to say that the feeling of a fair few Newcastle fans would be lifted by us claiming three points against Wigan at the weekend.

It’s a must win game in the eyes of many, a feeling that I tend to agree with. After disappointing home defeats to Blakpool and Stoke, Hughton will need to ensure the team bounce back against Wigan.

In fairness we have been playing well, really well at points, and we have deserved more than we have got out of some games. Some poor luck, like against Blackpool, and some awful decision-making from certain match officials have transpired to work against us at times this season, and I feel that is contributing to the sombre (ish) mood amongst fans at the moment.

The reality is that depsite the bad luck and despite the fact we have been playing fairly well, it doesn’t change the fact that we have just the seven points to show for our efforts so far this season. It’s about time that changed! (more…)

Now is the time for Hughton to prove his credentials.

Hughton needs to show some balls!
Hughton needs to show some balls!
Whilst some fans may still be reeling from the weekend loss at home to Blackpool, the reality is that it has now gone and there is absolutely zip that can be done about it.

Another reality is that as much as the stats suggest that we pretty much dominated the game and were unlucky to not get something, they don’t change the fact that we didn’t get anything out of a home game against a relegation rival.

That last part is the cause of most of the depressed feeling that is hanging around at the moment, in my opinion anyway. The loss on Saturday ruined my prediction coupon. I, and many others probably, had it down as a home win, but I always had the feeling that it would be a lot closer than a fair few were predicting. That loss now means we have to pick up some extra points on the road if we are to avoide getting sucked into the early season depression cycle of being near the bottom of the league. (more…)
