The treatment at St James’ Park is already beginning to fill up, even before a ball has been kicked in the Premier League.

It is worrying that we seem to be losing players left, right and centre due to injury, but an additional concern is the amount of time that players will be out because of these injuries.

Take Danny Simpson as an example, he will miss the first month of the season through injury, and it looks like Steven Taylor will be joining him although that is yet to be confirmed. Tamas Kadar is another player who is fighting to be fit for the start of the season. Add all that together and it is becoming apparent that we are desperately short of players in certain positions for the new season. (more…)

Ready to sign on the line?
Ready to sign on the line?
One of the better pieces of news to come out of St James’ Park has to be the announcement that a new contract is being drawn up ready for Steven Taylor to sign.

I wrote the other day that a contract would be offered to Taylor based on what Luke Edwards from The Journal was saying, and I attracted some stick for writing ‘any old guff’ whilst leaving people ‘disappointed’ that there wasn’t any quotes to back up what Luke Edwards and myself said.

Well now I have those quotes, from Chris Hughton no less, who has today confirmed to the Telegraph that Taylor wants to stay on Tyneside and help his adopted home town club survive in the Premier League rather than walking out of the St James’ Park exit door for pastures new, and that was something that has been a niggling fear for some fans for some time now. Simpson: Facing a fitness race.
Simpson: Facing a fitness race.
The Chronicle is reporting some rather worrying news today concerning right-back Danny Simpson, claiming there is a race to get him fit for the new season.

That seems a bit strange to me really, as most of us have known that Simpson has been carrying a niggling injury through the last few months of the season. I always thought it concerned the players hip though, and not his ankle as is being reported.

Let’s not forget that Simpson played on the last day of the season in what was a meaningless game really, the day after which he underwent surgery on a damaged tendon. So surely if it was likely that Simpson would be out for this length of time, the common sense thing to do would have been to send him off for his operation as soon as the title was wrapped up and give the lad a headstart on his recovery? We have Ryan Taylor who could have covered in that instance so it wouldn’t have been a problem, which is why I smell some sensational reporting. (more…)

Toon v WBA match banter: Will S.Taylor be on the team sheet?

The Throstles await, again!
The Throstles await, again!
This afternoon sees the third titanic encounter between the two Championship heavyweights of Newcastle United and West Brom. With the two previous encounters being very tight draws, it will be a very tough game to call.

As far as team news goes, George Caulkin has been reporting in the Times that Steven Taylor has suffered knee ligament damage from the last game with the Baggies, and may be out for the rest of the season, however this story has not been subtantiated at the time of writing. Danny Simpson is also highly doubtful after picking up an ankle knock too. Striker, Peter Lovenkrands will also be out of the squad after travelling to Denmark twice in the wake of his father’s death. Ryan Taylor and Tamas Kadar will probably step in if Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson are out of the game, with substitute keeper, Tim Krul looking for a bit of practice in between the sticks too.

For more details on the game, check out Geordie Deb’s excellent match preview on the game. If you have any links for audio coverage etc, please feel free to post them. (more…)
