One striker or two?

4-2-3-1 formation at Newcastle?
4-2-3-1 next season?
Gervinho rumours persist but what do Newcastle United in terms of strikers anyway?

The French press are announcing the ‘imminent’ arrival of Gervinho at Newcastle, which sounded promising until I noticed they got their information from Sky Sports.

Allegedly we’ve made a €16m bid for the player (£14.25m) – which may be true – but I can find nothing to confirm that Gervinho will be on Tyneside at all, let alone imminently.

But what do we need in terms of strikers anyway? And what sort of formations is Alan Pardew likely to consider?

For most games last season we played two up front, even after our (then) top scorer was sold to Liverpool.

Last season we used the following strikers:

Ameobi, scoring 9 goals in 30 games,
Lovenkrands, scoring 7 goals in 29 games,
Best, scoring 6 goals in 12 games,
Ranger, scoring 1 goal in 28 games (most of which were as a sub), and
Carroll, scoring 11 goals in 20 games.

And our top scorer turned out to be a midfielder in the shape of Kevin Nolan, who scored 12 goals in 32 games. (more…)

Birmingham after Best, Gosling and Ben Arfa keen and Owen elicits responses

Birmingham are after Newcastle's Leon Best.
Birmingham target, allegedly
Birmingham allegedly want Newcastle’s Leon Best. Dan Gosling and Hatem Ben Arfa gets in some early pre-season training. And Michael Owen seems to have upset a few people.

With all the speculation about who we might be buying, I’d quite forgotten that other teams might want some of our players other than Jose Enrique.

If you believe the Mail (no tittering), freshly relegated Birmingham are after Leon Best to replace Cameron Jerome who Alex McLeish seems resigned to losing. I actually thought Leon Best did a decent job for us last season, getting 6 goals in 12 games, and of all our current strikers he’s the one I’d most like to keep, but I guess it depends on who we bring in over the summer to enhance our goal-scoring capabilities.

How much do you think Best is worth anyway?

Both Dan Gosling and Hatem Ben Arfa have made an early return for pre-season training to ensure that they’re fully fit for next season. (more…)

Tiote loves Newcastle but is Gervinho going to join him?

Cheick Tiote prefers Newcastle to London
Doing his stuff for the Ivorians
Newcastle United’s Cheick Tiote reveals some reasons why he was happy to sign a new contract. Furthermore, could he help us sign his fellow Ivory Coast team-mate Gervinho?

Cheick Tiote has been talking to the Daily Mail. That’s the sort of thing this writer would normally recommend strongly against, like running with scissors, playing with fire or sticking your face in a fan.

In this case, however, Tiote reveals much about his contentment at the club, saying:

As soon as I arrived here the players made me welcome. They helped me settle in and that meant I could do a good job on the pitch.

The Mail suggests that Tiote rejected a transfer day move to Chelsea, which may be true or it may be something they’ve just read between the lines when Tiote expresses his preference for Newcastle over London as follows:

Newcastle life is good for me. It is not like London – London is too busy, there are too many people.

Newcastle is not so busy. That makes it easier to focus on your job. For me it is important. I would like to be here for a few years. I can learn here.

I feel settled here. I enjoy it here. The fans are good and the new manager likes me. The club has looked after me and I do my best for the team and the fans.(more…)
