Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our ‘match banter’ feature, this time for this afternoon’s game against Martin Jol’s solid, middle of the road Fulham.

Now call me a mad irrational fool, but I have a funny feeling in my water that we might not lose this one, and that if the wind is blowing in the right direction, we might even scrape a win! Although Fulham have assumed their usual position after only two games, ie solidly mid-table (12th), they haven’t been totally convincing, scraping a 1-0 away against a transitional Sunderland side then falling at home 1-3 to their fellow Londoners from Arsenal. Hello, good afternoon and welcome to the NUFC Blog “match banter” feature for this afternoon’s vital home game against the Cottagers of Fulham.

With only seven games of the season to go, Newcastle United are still not out of the relegation quagmire. With a strong, winning performance from Aston Villa yesterday, and Wigan going on their perennial end of season run, the pressure is well and truly on Alan Pardew now.

Pardew’s long balls.

Indeed, as you can see from the table below, we have been the biggest long ball side for the whole of this season, eschewing the more Continental “passing” style embraced by top clubs such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and so on. Here’s hoping it can keep us away from another season in the Championship. (more…)

Newcastle United v Fulham, 2011/2012
Jolly exciting!
Good afternoon Geordies. We’re up against Martin Jol’s Fulham at St James’ Park today as we attempt to continue our unbeaten start to the season.

Fulham have a good record against us and lead by 26 to 24 in the winning stakes and they apparently conceded fewer goals to set pieces than any other Premier League team last season, which is a shame as that’s been the best part of our game recently.

European football will no doubt have taken its toll on their players though and they’re without John Arne Riise as result of their midweek game against Dnipro.

For a full analysis, see Jimbob’s excellent match preview, but I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that although our Prediction Competition is well under way, although there is still time to catch up if you haven’t entered yet.

As it stands – with yesterday’s results in – ‘sveinstrand’ and ‘El Toro’ are joint top of the table with 23 points each. (more…)
