Owen on the verge of Villa move? Apparently not.
Owen on the verge of Villa move?
Aston Villa are on the verge of signing Michael Owen for Aston Villa, the Birmingham Mail are reporting today.

The report says that Owen, 29, whose contract has now effectively expired at Newcastle is keen to renew his strike partnership with former Liverpool and England team-mate, Emile Heskey, and would be willing to accept a salary which is half of what he was receiving at St James’s Park.

Whatever the speculation, he will almost certainly going somewhere next season, he’ll almost certainly be getting a much lower wage, and we still wouldn’t be able to afford that anyway in the Championship.

Full report here.

The report has since been denied by Villa’s manager, Martin O’Neill.

  1. “More to follow…”

Probably (hopefully) half the squad ;-)

Inevitable end to a disappointing affair. It could have been so different.

  2. I expect he’ll start playing fantastically at Villa (or wherever he goes).

“I expect he’ll start playing fantastically at Villa (or wherever he goes).”

With a more creative team around him. We can’t keep him now though, whatever happens.

  4. Think It’s fair to say it hasn’t been our greatest signing!

He looked shot to bits this season, didn’t look fit and missed chance after chance….

  5. Stuart, I think it’s a small difference for strikers like Owen. They can look invisible for almost a whole game and then; bang! They either score or they nearly score. So when they stop doing that for a few games, we forget the goals, and they start to look like a “passenger” in the team.

  6. I said last week, I want to respect, I want to admire him, I want to love him (within reason). But it’s been difficult due to what Stuart says and the fact he’s looked apathetic despite me wanting to believe otherwise.

workey – no bother. I was just being facetious about the “more to follow” being all of our players out the door and a shambles of a squad left for August. You may, or may not have got that though!

Owen has been a passenger at the club for four years. Injuries obviously didn’t help but I really believe he just isn’t the same player he was and he looked pretty poor.

  8. i cant see him getting in villa’s team. Carew and Agbonlahor are more dangerous than him.

  9. Any1 else see on sky sports news that oba martins wants to remain at Newcastle

  10. its not on the website alan ill have to put it on the tv later

  11. Alanmc09 yeah his agent said that oba fully expects to see out his remaining 2 years of his contract and that he will remain at newcastle

  12. If Owen goes to another team and does well, it’ll prove he isn’t finished and might indicate he simply hasn’t been getting the service he needs (although I can’t imagine many players were entirely blameless last season, such was the dreadful standard of our play).

If he’s equally poor in his new team then I guess we’d have to admit he’s had it and we really have been wasting our time with him this season.

  13. thats not a good thing he just wants the money we pay him. no-one else will give him that much.

<<<<well i honestly think oba has got real love for the club

  15. batty – I’d probably agree. Martins seems to have the type of personality that he forms a bond with a club and it’s fans and would stick around if wanted and playing well. I’m not convinced he’ll be any more consistent a goalscorer in The Championship though so truthfully and ruthlessly, it might worth cashing in.

  16. there is nothing about getting the club back up to the premier league like duff and beye said just ill see out my 60k a week contract is what martins is saying
