Ranger: Hoping for a place the neet!Chris Hughton has challenged his fringe players to step up and perform tonight as they prepare to face Arsenal in the last 16 of the Carling Cup.
The United boss wants the players to build on their feel good factor and add Arsenal to their list of League Cup victories.
Hughton looks set name a second string XI tonight against the Gunners, just like he did at Stamford Bridge when he named an entirely new XI from the side which beat Everton days before.
United’s boss told the Press Association:
“There is nothing that lifts and breeds confidence like winning football matches, and whether that’s the same team, whether that’s a completely different team or whether that’s a mixture, it’s a feeling that goes through the club.
“That would see us going into the Sunderland game certainly more confident.”
Hughton is expected to call on the young talent at his disposal again tomorrow with the likes of Shane Ferguson, Tamas Kadar, Haris Vuckic and Nile Ranger all pushing for starts. (more…)
Hughton: Which way will he turn tomorrow?Chris Hughton will begin the toughest week of his NUFC career tomorrow when his United side begin a home double against Arsenal in the Carling Cup before a derby day with Sunderland on Sunday.
Tomorrow night’s last 16 meeting with the Gunners was unexpected for Hughton and arguably a game he did not want his side to have after his second 11 edged Chelsea in a 4-3 thriller at Stamford Bridge.
But here we are facing a mid week game five days before his first derby as the United boss at home to Arsene Wenger’s side.
The big question however is what approach will the mild mannered Magpie boss take tomorrow? Will United again call upon the reserves of our limited squads with the likes of Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands returning.
Or will he gamble against what is sure to be a young Arsenal side, after all If we can get past Arsenal that would leave only Manchester United left from last season’s top 6 assuming they get past struggling Wolves tonight. (more…)
A warm welcome to Wigan FC.It’s a welcome return to the Premier League this weekend following England’s dismal display against Montenegro, and with the return to club football comes the return of the Top Ten’s of United’s next opposition. This time it’s Wigan Athletic.
United head into the game looking to find some home form following frustrating defeats to Blackpool and Stoke City. If Chris Hughton reads these important facts it might give him the tactical edge over Mr Martinez in the Wigan dug out. You never know eh?
1. There isn’t much of a history between the two sides, with only 11 meetings between the two clubs, nine of which have been since Wigan’s promotion to the Premier League in 2005. And its The Latics who hold the better head-to-head record with five wins compared our four. Newcastle fans can, hopefully, take confidence from the fact that Wigan have yet to record a victory at Newcastle with United winning three and drawing two of the matches at St James’ Park. (more…)
The Montenegro flag.The international break has, unfortunately, meant that there has been no club football for us over the last week or so, but at least it gives us a chance to look at some different football – International football.
For this article I am going to take a look at England’s opponents tonight, Montenegro, a rare chance to involve some European opposition on this website!

First off I would like to say sorry to anyone who reads the top ten pieces after I unfortunately had to miss the last two games.
But today it returns, and just in time for the trip to Manchester City and is, as ever, jam packed with totally useless pub quiz facts about meeting between the two clubs for you to cast your eyes over.
1 – There is no better place to begin than looking at the record between the two clubs. From 162 competitive meetings between the two sides United have won 70, City have won 54 whilst there has been 38 draws between the two sides.
Newcastle have not won in any of the last seven meetings between the two sides, with Micheal Owen netting his first goal for the club in our last victory at St James’ Park way back in 2005. United’s last win at City was way back in 2001/02 with a certain Alan Shearer scoring the only goal, which means that it has now been 17 visits since we returned home with 3 points. (more…)
