Tino wants Toon to aim for Europe

Newcastle United legend Faustino Asprilla thinks Newcastle should be aiming for Europe this season.

Tino seems a bit more ambitious than Alan Pardew’s ‘eventual top 10’ aims and wants us to aim for Europe this season.

Asprilla, who was at the derby game on Sunday, had this to say:

I know that Newcastle’s main aim at the beginning of the season was to stay up

It was very sad and tearful to see the club get relegated a couple of years ago, but I always knew that they would be back with all of those fans behind them. They are in a difficult league at the moment and there are only a few points between the teams.

That means anything can happen. You can go on a bad run and slide down the league, but if you have a good run in the next six or seven matches you are in with a chance for the last 10 or so games, which is when the season really counts.

And as far as Europe is concerned, why not? If you aim high, you can achieve it, it would be fantastic to see. (more…)

The next stop in our look at some of Newcastle greatest matches of recent history takes us to Anfield for a game that will be remembered not only by both sets of fans, but by neutral fans all over the place.

It is still to this day widely regarded as one of the best matches in Premier League history, despite fact we came away from Anfield with no points and having suffered a severe dent to our title ambitions. (more…)

Part four of my look at some of the best games from the modern history of Newcastle United features a Champions League game from September 1997, just before Kenny Dalglish managed to sell off the last of the creative players we had, and yes that was a dig!

It was a match that will live long in the memory of many a Newcastle fan, as arguably the best team in Europe were sent packing back to Spain after losing 3-2 against a side that nobody thought has a chance of winning. (more…)
