Signing a striker should be a priority for Newcastle.

Newcastle need backup for these two.
Newcastle need backup for these two.
At the moment, all the rumours seem to be surrounding players such as Dan Gosling and Tom Cleverley.

The problem for me is that both of those are midfield players, and in my opinion we should be making signing a striker a priority. Now it’s only speculation surrounding those two players, but they are both tipped to move to Newcastle soon if you believe what you read in the press.

That is all very good and what not, but what happens at the business end of the pitch? Who is going to put the ball in the back of the net? We need to score goals to survive in the Premier League. Do I have faith in the players that we have at the minute being able to do that? Yes and no is my answer, which is obviously confusing so let me explain a bit more. (more…)

Xisco - Drinking in the last chance saloon?
Xisco - Drinking in the last chance saloon?
It looks like our Spanish striker Xisco will be returning to training with Newcastle next week, although for how long he remains on Tyneside is a question that is still in need of answering.

The thought was that the club he had been on loan to last season, Racing Santander, would come calling and look to take him off of our hands permanently.

That doesn’t look like it is going to happen, and having scored only three goals in 23 appearances last season, I can perhaps see why they don’t seem to be interested in the former Spanish Under-21 striker. The fate cards have been dealt though, and Xisco will once again be looking to make an impact at Newcastle, and given the apparent lack of money, could it be worth giving him another shot at SJP? Spanish hitman heading for the exit?
Spanish hitman heading for the exit?
It looks like Xisco will be touted around clubs this summer in an attempt by Newcastle to unload him and his wages onto someone else.

The prime candidates to secure the Spaniards signature will be Racing Santander, especially now their controversial La Liga survival has been confirmed. Xisco has been on loan there all season but has struggled to make an impact scoring only three times in his twenty-three apearances for the club. Manager Chris Hughton will be looking to offload him to free up some wages as his current wage is just ridiculous for someone who hasn’t really done much in the game, and we all know who we can blame for us signing Xisco in the first place. Vying for No.9 at Newcastle United? – Part Deux.

So who fancies living up to this then?
So who fancies living up to this then?
Well here it is, the third and final chapter of my mid-term player review. And a topical area for discussion, as speculation remains over a move for Leeds Utd’s Jermaine Beckford, or A.N. Other should we fail in that bid.

The No.9 shirt is almost as synonymous with Newcastle United, as St James’ Park, the black and white stripes or that deed funny accent we’ve got. It’s been made particularly special in this part of the world because it’s been worn by some of the best players this country has seen. The likes of Gallacher, Milburn, MacDonald, Cole, Shearer have graced that shirt and it will undoubtedly always be a big shirt to fill.

Ironic then, given that the No.9 shirt and the prestige it carries with it is currently up for grabs, that we have a group of strikers who fall somewhat short of the standards we’ve come to expect from our centre-floorboards, and that none of them look like earning that honour just yet, particularly in this current barren spell…..

So how far short have they fallen so far? (more…)

You’re not a loan? Hughton – “I don’t really expect to bring anybody in”.

Jus' chillin'?

Chris Hughton has admitted that he is pretty laidback as the hour approaches and the ‘temporary loan signing’ window shuts at 5pm tomorrow night until February.
It has long been reported that Leon Cort has been on Hughton’s radar but Hughton has been telling the Chronicle that he’s not in any rush to sign players just for the sake of it:

“You never know, but realistically looking at the squad I don’t really expect to bring anybody in during the next month or so.

“Of course, all sorts of things can happen in the next 24 hours, and phone calls will be made on Thursday with players potentially becoming available.

“Some clubs might make a decision that some of the players who weren’t available earlier in the season are now there for loans. But we’ll see.” (more…)
