Will ‘the Saint’ be enough to save Newcastle? There is only one thing that stops the “we want Brucey out” chants at St James Park and that is the expectant roar whenever Allan Saint-Maximin gets on the ball. Indeed, even the most fed-up Geordie will momentarily put his grievances with the manager to one side to appreciate the spectacle that follows.
The French winger breathes life into the terraces of St James’ Park and reminds fans of why they fell in love with the sport in the first place. Indeed, Saint-Maximin’s carefree nature with the ball at his feet is a throwback to simpler times given that his approach is so refreshingly straightforward: run at the opposition and put the fear of God into their backline. How a relegated Toon side might look like next May. A late goal-scoring run from Joe Willock helped power Newcastle to five wins in their last eight fixtures to finish the 2020/21 campaign in 12th place – a full 17 points above the drop zone. Yet, there were times when Steve Bruce’s men looked genuinely in danger of facing the drop. The big question ahead of the new season is: Can the Magpies carry that good form forward and consolidate mid-table status? Or will they regress into relegation candidates once again? (more…)
Jones: Former right hand man to Roberto Martinez Despite a good performance against Everton, it has been a poor winter for Newcastle United. It seems the club’s solution is not signing new players in the January transfer window though, but by adding to Steve Bruce’s backroom staff.
Gateshead-born Graeme Jones has joined the Magpies as assistant boss. A forward on the pitch, he began his playing career with non-league North Shields. However, he is best known for firing Wigan Athletic to the fourth-tier title (today known as EFL League Two) in the 1996-97 season. (more…)

Our play might be boring, but Bruce has made some good signings The 2020-21 Premier League season is well underway and this year’s Newcastle squad has a very different feel to last season. In classic Newcastle fashion though, despite the promise of a newly formed squad, results have been mixed. It’s best to seek guidance and opinion from professionals when trying to predict any fixture in the Premier League this season, but this is especially true of the Toon Army given their revised attacking options.
Bruce himself has come under criticism and pressure from fans since joining the club, and many have questioned the transfers brought into Newcastle in recent years, with Mike Ashley usually the first to be blamed. The Newcastle Chairman has given the club a cash injection under Bruce’s tenure, and it’s fair to say that the jury is still out on most of the recruitment. (more…)
