Oh Danny Boys! Toon’s second choice midfielders get their chance to shine.

Newcastle United's Danny Guthrie and Dan Gosling.
Hurrah for the two Dannys!
When Danny Guthrie arrived at Newcastle I instantly thought of the time we signed Robert Lee!

I know, hang on a min how the hell did I come up with that comparison? Also, in the seasons that have followed he has been mostly a bit part player only showing flashes of what he is capable of. But the comparisons were there as it was one of Keegan’s first players to arrive after taking charge for the second time. He wasn’t expensive and has that very hard quality to find in a midfielder, in that he’s a box to box type of player with a broad range of passing, has an eye for goal, who can win the ball and drive the team on like a poor mans Steven Gerrard!

Also with Dan Gosling, when we also managed to sign him on a free with the feeling amongst the fans that finally we are looking at sensible up and coming players and not getting ripped off paying for expensive big names who don’t perform. Having arrived injured we are still waiting to see the best of the former England U21 who had shown so much potential at Everton and warranted the cheeky deal that we managed to get him on. (more…)

Dan Gosling: Was he better off at Everton?

Dan Gosling.
Bye bye gosling?
I’ve got to admit, when we signed young Dan Gosling from Everton (On a free) I was very happy.

A young creative English player whose career seemed on the up. However after reading the Daily Fail’s article this morning, I’m dismayed to see he might be off to Doncaster.

Dan Gosling, where did it all go wrong?

Is this the trouble with flying high in the Premier League, only yesterday in my Tim Krul blog did I highlight how we can afford to give these youngsters a chance given our league position. Yet we have a bright young English player who wants to go and play his trade in Doncaster?

I feel that young Gosling may be regretting his trip to the Toon, at Everton, who were under resourced, he and Rodwell sent many a tongues wagging about how they were having a positive influence at Goodison. However all I really have seen from him in a Toon shirt is injury and reserve games. I do feel that he is good enough for our first team, which is why I’m so perplexed at this reported move to Donny. Will Ashley’s gamble pay off?

One throw of the dice
Mike Ashley: Playing a dangerous game at NUFC?
With the new season just a few short hours from kick off, Toon fans everywhere take stock of the events of the past few months and are no doubt wondering what kind of start we’ll have given the merciless squad upheaval.

Since the transfer window opened Geordies have sat around with baited breath hoping for some good news to pop up on the Sky Sports News Ticker. Needless to say, it’s been a rollercoaster ride. [Neil] Taylor, Gervinho, Gameiro, Cabaye, Erdinc, Nolan, Marveaux, Ba, Barton, Routledge, Enrique, Crouch, Defoe, Long, Beckford, Lovenkrands, Bendtner, Benayoun – and that’s just the players we’ve bought, sold, are supposed to be selling or been linked with that I can think of off the top of my head!

Toon fans are a rugged lot and we’ve put up with enough of the proverbial for us to be able to pick apart a rumour from a genuine story and gladly celebrate when we are linked to a top player; at least somebody out there thinks we can sign Messi for an estimated £8m.

Still, taken into account our outgoing transfers (Nolan, Enrique, Routledge) and comparing them to our incoming (Cabaye, Marveaux, Abeid, Ba, Obertan) – I’d usually say we’ve done pretty well! (more…)
