Newcastle reign in Spain – Deportivo 0-0 Newcastle (3-5 on pens)

August 3rd, 2010 | 96 Comments |

Newcastle played out an entertaining pre-season encounter with Deportivo la Coruna in Spain this evening, and walked away with some silverware for their efforts.

In an enjoyable yet even match it was Newcastle who triumphed and took the Teresa Herrera trophy back to Tyneside with them, although admittedly it took a penalty shoot-out to seperate the two sides after they played out a 0-0 draw in the 90 minutes.

There was a fair amount of positives to come out of this evenings games, and the performance in general left me personally feeling satisfied as we head off to Rangers on Saturday. Joey Barton, sporting his porn effect moustache, impressed with Danny Guthrie in the middle, Fabricio Coloccini was a rock in defence, Leon Best and Andy Carroll made themselves a nuisance up front, and in general we kept the ball quite well at times. Deportivo la Coruna v Newcastle – Pre-season match banter.

Super Depor...

Newcastle clash with Deportivo in The Riazor tonight in game four out of five of our pre-season campaign.

I’ve said before that pre-season is mainly about sharpness and fitness, and that applies to the ‘blog aswell as we welcome back the return of our match banter articles.

This is the place to come together and piss and moan about the match as we always do, and we should hopefully have the added bonus of TV coverage to aid in our dissection of tonights performance. If you know of any links for the match then please feel free to share them with your fellow Newcastle United supporters in the ‘comments’ section below.

Performance is the key, for me anyway, although a result would be nice to go with it. It is time that we stepped up our game and showed everyone what we are made of, and a decent performance against a good team like Deportivo la Coruna will at least show that we are on the right track as the proper season draws ever closer. Newcastle head off to sunny sunny Spain for game number four of the pre-season campaign.

Deportivo la Coruna play the hosts tonight as Newcastle step up preparations by tackling their second game in just a few days to ensure they are ready for the big kick-off against Manchester United on the 16th.

Newcastle took a 20-man squad out to la Coruna via private jet yesterday afternoon and will have to deal with a place that us slightly hotter than the UK at the moment. I was planning on going to this myself as a birthday treat but it was just too expensive so I have had to settle for Wolverhampton in a few weeks instead. I’ve heard there isn’t that much difference between Spain and the West Midlands on a sunny day, at least that’s what I’m trying to tell myself anyway! (more…)

Total football! Newcastle 2-2 PSV Eindhoven.

Newcastle were taught a lesson today as PSV Eindhoven took them apart at St James’ Park this afternoon. The scoreline didn’t reflect the superiority displayed by the Dutch, but I guees it is the result of 2-2 that counts.

The Dutch philosophy of ‘Total Football’ was reinforced as PSV controlled the ball and left the Newcastle players chasing shadows for large periods of the game.

I know it’s only pre-season, and it’s all about fitness etc, but these games should also serve as a warning to the management. Our starting eleven may be good enough for survival in my opinion, but if any of those starting eleven players are out through injury or suspension then we could struggle. New faces to add to the squad are still very much needed, all in my opinion of course. (more…)

Coming home Newcastle.
Coming home Newcastle.
Game number three of our pre-season preparation takes place tomorrow as Newcastle welcome PSV Eindhoven to St James’ Park for what should be a tough test.

Tomorrow is also a special day for both sets of fans, for England fans, Barcelona fans, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Fulham, West Brom, Ipswich and football in general as it will be one year since the legend that is Sir Bobby Robson passed on.

I won’t go into that too much in this article as I would prefer to write a whole article in tribute to the man, but the date, occasion and opposition should ensure that the match tomorrow is a memorable occasion for all concerned. It’s just a shame that I won’t be able to be there. (more…)
