A tough climax to a tough season.

Date: Sun 19th May, 2013.

Referee: Howard Webb (Sheffield).
UK TV: Sky Sports 1.

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our final match banter of the season!

Of course, this game sees us facing Arsenal at St James’ Park. Thankfully, it will not be a do or die game for Premier League survival against very stiff opposition thanks to our previous 1-2 victory against the not quite so stiff Queens Park Rangers – That would have been just too much to bear. Even so, the fact that we have been teetering on the abyss so close to the end of the season is indicative of what a disappointing season we’ve had.

Before I carry on though, just a quick note to let you know that I will actually be at the game this time. Hence, I might not be posting the team sheets, links to watch the game online etc as I usually do. I will try, though if some of you regulars could help out by posting the teams, that would be most appreciated! Alternatively, they can be found on the club’s official website

Can we do the double on Arsenal?
Can we do the double on Arsenal?
Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our regular “match banter” feature.

Today, sees us pitting our wits against the title challengers of Arsenal. A daunting prospect, however we did of course manage to scrape a 1-0 victory at their place in our last game against the Gunners. Of course though, we also had a certain Andy Carroll to score the goal on that occaision.

As usual, you can catch up on all the usual pre match stuff with Hugh De Payen’s excellent match preview. However, some late news is that our defensive colossus, Fabricio Coloccini will have had to face a late fitness test before the game after suffering a hamstring problem.

The focus today however will probably be on Newcastle United’s strike force at the front. With old hand, Shola Ameobi out with a cheekbone fracture sustained on Wednesday evening’s disappointing away match at Fulham, and Andy Carroll away with the scousers, and still injured anyway. This leaves manager, Alan Pardew, looking to three first choice strikers, Leon Best, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger, who have a grand total of 15 Premier League starts between them, though they have all featured much more as subs. League Cup battle of the bairns?
League Cup battle of the bairns?
Hello, good evening and welcome to NUFC Blog’s match banter for this evening’s League Cup encounter with the mighty Arsenal at St James’s Park.

Of course, a fair amount of the pre match speculation has revolved around how strong a sides the respective managers, Hughton and Wenger, will put out for this competition. With Newcastle facing a crucial local derby with the unwashed vagrants of Wearside, and of course, having to concentrate on Premiership survival above all else. Arsenal meanwhile will always have an eye on keeping their place in the top four “Champion’s League” places, with the League Cup sometimes becoming something of a sideshow for major teams and relegation battlers alike. However, it should not be forgotten that Arsenal have not won a major trophy since 2005, and with many of the other major teams already eliminated, Arsene Wenger may well be tempted to field a stronger side. A Wenger pre match interview, in whivh he was quite fulsome in his praise of Hughton’s Newcastle, suggests that he might. He said: (more…)
