Do it for Benny!
Do it for Benny!
Newcastle host title chasing Manchester City in a rare Boxing Day match on Tyneside, but in contrast to the plummeting tempaertaures, the atmosphere could be as hot as ever after the ill feeling harvested as a result of the reverse fixture at the City of Manchester Stadium back in October comes to the fore.

Newcastle played really well on the day and deserved much more than they got from the match. Martin Atkinson, the match referee for that game, awarded Man City a penalty for a challenge that was outside the box, but then failed to send Mike Williamson off for being the last man, which should have been the case if it was a foul. He also missed a blatant penalty that should have been awarded to Newcastle after Joleon Lescott hacked down Shola Ameobi in the penalty area. Perhaps the biggest contributing factor to the ill feeling is the fate of Hatem Ben Arfa, who had his leg broke in two places after a lunge by Nigel de Jong. Apparently this was deemed as a fair tackle, and Atkinson waved play on despite the Frenchman being on the ground writhing in pain. (more…)

St Andrews - Home of Birmingham City.
St Andrews - Home of Birmingham City.
Newcastle head to St Andrews on Saturday afternoon where they will come up against a tough Birmingham City side.

Newcastle will have to be at their very best of they are to beat a side that doesn’t generally give much away, especially on their own turf.

Birmingham are a physical side who work hard for each other. They chase and harry the opposition when they haven’t got the ball and can be a real threat when they do have the ball. The league table may suggest that Birmingham are struggling at the moment, but it will still be a very tough game.

Still, Newcastle have to go to The Midlands believing that they can win the game. The importance of three points, or even a point, can’t be understated, especially with tough games against Manchester City and Tottenham coming up over the festive period. Building on the impressive 3-1 victory over Liverpool has to be a high priority for Alan Pardew and the lads. (more…)

Molineux - Hungry like the Wolves?
Molineux - Hungry like the Wolves?
Newcastle hit the road again this weekend as they return to Premier League action against Wolves tomorrow.

It’s our first regular Saturday 3pm kick-off of the season, and it is a match that I will be in attendance for.

Newcastle will be full of confidence after the 6-0 mauling of Aston Villa last weekend, but they will also need to be aware that if they want to take anything out of the game at Molineux then they will have to fight tooth and nail for it. Wolves is not an easy place to go to nowadays, if it ever was in the first place, and they will be the favourites for the win in the eyes of many.

Both Chris Hughton and Mick McCarthy will bring their respective A-Team back into the fold for the match. They ain’t no fools, and they know that staying in the league is the main priority for both teams this season. Both managers fielded shadow side in the Carling Cup in midweek, although Wolves had to bring on some of their senior players as their midweek game went to extra time. (more…)
