Taylor: Divven't knaa how long yet.
Newcastle United manager, Chris Hughton is playing the waiting game as he counts the cost of two costly games against fierce Championship rivals, West Bromwich Albion.

Firstly, centre back, Steven Taylor “tweaked” his knee in the thrilling 2-2 league encounter with the Midlands club, and the Times’s North East football corresspondent, George Caulkin, had reported that he would be out for the entire season. In the second FA Cup fiasco meanwhile, Fenham hitman, Shola Ameobi feel badly on his shoulder, and old midfield grunter, Nicky Butt, “felt his calf” in the build up to the cup game.

Hughton said on the carnage:

“Steven tweaked his knee against West Brom and we’ll learn more this week on the extent of that one.”

On the Shola shoulder scenario, he continued:

“Shola landed awkwardly on his shoulder at West Brom and he’s another one we assessed but we don’t think it’s anything major”.

Finally, on Butt he concluded: (more…)

The Throstles await, again!
The Throstles await, again!
This afternoon sees the third titanic encounter between the two Championship heavyweights of Newcastle United and West Brom. With the two previous encounters being very tight draws, it will be a very tough game to call.

As far as team news goes, George Caulkin has been reporting in the Times that Steven Taylor has suffered knee ligament damage from the last game with the Baggies, and may be out for the rest of the season, however this story has not been subtantiated at the time of writing. Danny Simpson is also highly doubtful after picking up an ankle knock too. Striker, Peter Lovenkrands will also be out of the squad after travelling to Denmark twice in the wake of his father’s death. Ryan Taylor and Tamas Kadar will probably step in if Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson are out of the game, with substitute keeper, Tim Krul looking for a bit of practice in between the sticks too.

For more details on the game, check out Geordie Deb’s excellent match preview on the game. If you have any links for audio coverage etc, please feel free to post them. (more…)

Kadar - on standby
Kadar - on standby
Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini face late tests to prove their fitness for Newcastle United’s game against Forest this weekend.

Both players have been hit by hamstring injuries – Colocinni’s a few weeks ago and Taylor’s just recently – and Hughton has this to say about their chances of playing on the weekend:

Steven has a hamstring problem, but we’re refusing to rule him out. We’ll see if we can get him involved with the main group first, and get him up and running before we rule him out of Saturday.

Coloccini is probably up to about 90 per cent in the work he has been doing and is another one we are not prepared to rule out. Hopefully we will get him on the training pitch on Friday.”

Tamas Kadar is on standby in case he’s needed, with Hughton commenting thusly on the lad:

Tamas has done very well for us,” Hughton told the Gazette. “He hasn’t had the opportunities he’d have liked, but he’s developing with each training session with the first team, and he’s very much part of that group now. He gives us valuable cover at centre-half and left-back.” (more…)
